Shelter Information

Kitten Rescue is a non-profit, volunteer-run organization devoted to finding loving homes for unwanted, homeless cats and kittens. We rescue cats and kittens from the streets of Los Angeles and from City Shelter euthanasia. Since our start in 1997, we have grown into one of the largest, most well-respected animal welfare groups in LA. Kitten Rescue volunteers adopt out over 1,000 cats and kittens into homes every year. We educate the public about responsible pet guardianship, how to care for kittens and cats, and the importance of spaying and neutering. Kitten Rescue makes educational material available via events, print, school presentations and here on our website. We also provide Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) assistance for communities in and around Los Angeles, and teach people how to manage and care for feral cat colonies.

DOB: 8/15/19 Allegra is a beautiful girl that loves head and chin rubs. She is a pretty mellow girl that likes to perch on the cat tree and bask in the sun or curl up beside her foster mom while she watches TV or takes a nap.  Allegra is a bit shy when she meets new people but she is not a skittish girl...unless you move the vacuum cleaner too close to her.  She takes a little bit of time to warm up to new people but once you earn her trust she will be your best friend. The fastest way to Allegra's heart is through her tummy - she loves to eat wet food and yummy treats like shredded chicken.  If you want a friendly, loving kitty that likes attention but is not too needy, Allegra is your girl!  Allegra would be happiest in a single-pet household without young children You are invited to meet the beautiful Allegra and see if she is the right kitty for you.  If you are interested in learning more about this kitty or in adopting her, please click here to email her foster parent. If you are unable to send an email to the foster parent through the link included above, please contact us and let us know what kitty you're interested in.  You may also fill out our adoption questionnaire to speed up the screening process.  Be sure to name the cat in the CAT PREFERENCE field at the beginning of the questionnaire. DOB: 12/1/19 Barney and Betty are a bonded pair of cats that will keep you entertained and amused till the cows come home.  They're both a little over a year old, but they're very kitten like and they still act like complete and utter goofballs.  These cats are hilarious.  They're super engaged, alert, and people-oriented.  Barney walks around meowing a lot, for no apparent reason.  He's as talkative as a Siamese.  And he follows you around like a dog and will come running if you call him.  Betty plops over for tummy rubs the minute you touch her, and the motors start roaring.  They're both total lap-cat love-bugs, too.  Truly adorable cats.   Now, if you want laid-back cats, these are not the ones for you.  They're very energetic and interactive.  They'll be all over you like a cold sweat the minute you enter the room.  Eventually they calm down and hang out on their own, but boy are they enthusiastic about their human!  As their foster mom so aptly put it, 'I'm like catnip to them!'   Barney has FIV, unfortunately, but that really doesn't mean much at all.  It's not contagious except by violent fighting, and you can be sure this loving boy doesn't have a mean bone in his body; and as long as he's fed well and stays safe indoors, the FIV doesn't need to affect his wellness or lifespan at all.  Given proper care and attention, an FIV positive cat will live as long as an FIV negative cat.   There's a fair amount of bad superficial understanding of FIV that floats around the internet or in the veterinary practitioner circle (since they don't see it often), so if you want to really learn about it, you should start here for a basic FAQ. If you want to read a peer-reviewed study on whether FIV is casually transmissible, then go  here. If you'd like to read a much more detailed and comprehensive FAQ about FIV, we highly recommend this site, which also has information about care, health monitoring, diet, and supplements used by owners of FIV cats.   So if you like cats who are funny, goofy, engaged, intelligent, playful, good natured, interactive, affectionate, and every wonderful kitty-thing, then these are the cats for you.  Oh, and we mustn't forget to mention how beautiful and soft they are!  Betty's fur is like silk and actually shimmers.  They're both simply delicious!  Are you ready for the time of your life?  Then Barney and Betty are ready for you! Barney has tested positive for FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus). FIV is not a big deal; given proper care and attention, an FIV+ cat will live the same lifespan as an FIV negative cat. The disease is extremely hard to transmit from cat to cat, requiring direct blood contact (typically from a deep puncture wound). It is not transmissable to humans. Click here for a basic FAQ about FIV. If you'd like to read a much more detailed and comprehensive FAQ about FIV, we recommend this site. DOB: 2/6/18 Blade is a very sweet kitty who gets along with other cats. A bit of a shy guy, he responds to pets and attention, but will have a longer adjustment arc to a new environment. Prior to coming in to rescue, Blade was living as a stray in the valley, doing his best to stay alive. While he was on the streets, he injured his front leg. A vet exam revealed that he did not need an amputation. Though he can not use his leg fully, he can plant on it and is able to get around well and get on the lower levels of cat trees, and he can probably get on the sofa to binge watch your favorite show with you.  After all he has been through, this gentle kitty can't wait to find his forever home.  If you are interested in learning more about this kitty or in adopting him, please click here to email his foster parent. DOB: 3/1/14 Briggs and Cheyenne are a bonded pair of slightly older cats who definitely don't act their age -- and all the better for us, 'cause the fun and antics know no end with these two. Here are some words that Briggs's foster mom uses to describe this endearing fellow: Playful and mischievous, curious and persistent, sweet, affectionate and cuddly, funny and cute, talkative and loud, easy going. She says he gets along great with other cats, he's very people oriented and wants to be where his human is, but isn't clingy, he gives kisses, and most of all, he's got TONS of personality.   And this is what she says about Brigg's girlfriend Cheyenne: Besides being a real beauty, Cheyenne is sweet and affectionate, she starts purring the second you touch her, she's independent but also loving, she's playful, confident, and she gets along with other pets that are friendly. She's a lovely lady cat and an all-around good girl.   So you can see these two are a couple of wonderful felines. They're healthy and youthful, upbeat and loving, easy going and fun. What more could a person ask for? Would you like to be the lucky one??? DOB: 1/10/2009 Hi!  I'm Brody and I'm an amazing cat!  Yes, I'm a senior citizen, but I'm still very active, playful and I'm very affectionate.  In fact, my foster mom says I'm quite a character!  I'm sort of like a dog, because I come running when you call me, I greet you at the door, and I beg for food!  I was rescued off the street when my previous owners moved away and kicked me outside, where I became very sick and almost died.  After several months of vet care and a special diet, I am now healthy and ready to be a 'special' companion to a very special human.  I hate dogs and I'm okay with other cats, as long as they're not aggressive or territorial, because I like to be the 'alpha' male of the house.  Everyone who meets me falls in love with me! DOB: 12/4/20 Cady is adorably soft and sweet!  She loves to e carried like a baby and to have her tummy rubbed!  Her little purr motor will roar!  Cady is definitely a beta personality who would be a good friend to another kitty or even alone with a person who stays home a lot.  She is showing tendencies of being a lap kitty but right now we have to place her on our laps where she instantly relaxes and rolls on her back!  We believe that when she has her own home she will initiate the lap sitting!  Cady is cute and playful. She has a friend here at the Adoption Center where she lives. Ginger Rogers is like her big sister and they play and sometimes argue as sisters will do.  She can be adopted with Ginger or to a home with another kitty or she can be adopted as and only kitty to someone who has a lot of time to spend with her. DOB: 4/2/20 *****Cheeks is Feline Leukemia Virus Positive**** Our Cheeks is a great boy! He survived panleukopenia as a kitten, but was then diagnosed with FeLV. He arrived in our FeLV Suite from his foster home he had a lot of spunk, energy, and sass. Cheeks has mellowed out as he has grown up, but though he still likes to play with the other cats in the FeLV suite. He has become an attentive, and sometimes bossy, big brother to some of the kittens who currently live with him.  He would be fine in a home with another FeLV positive cat, or on this own. Cheeks is a friendly companion cat who will want to be with you, playing with your shoelaces or playing with a toy.  He gets easily involved in wand toys, laser toys, and anything with a mouse.  Generally, Cheeks will follow people who come into the FeLV Suite around and then take his chance to cuddle with them or play. Cheeks just celebrated his first birthday and is ready for a forever home! Please follow Cheeks and his friends on their IG page: felvcatsofkittenrescue If you are interested in learning more about this kitty or in adopting [im, please click here to email her foster parent. DOB:  7/15/11 Chester is a sweet old man cat who's been through a lot in his life.  We're not sure exactly what happened to him, but we suspect he wasn't taken good care of AT ALL, and after almost ten years of that shoddy treatment, he was dumped at a high-kill shelter -- simply discarded.  We couldn't bare to see such a good-natured old fellow die in the shelter, unloved and unwanted, so we got him out, just in the nick of time.   It turns out he has some health problems, which is no wonder, considering how neglected he was throughout his life.  He has FIV, probably from getting beaten up by other cats.   FIV is not a big deal, of course, in the sense that it's only contagious through fighting, and Chester is not the fighting type, so he would never give it to any other cats.  He also has an underlying condition of IBD (irritable bowel syndrome), requiring that he be fed a special gastrointestinal food, along with probiotics, Vitamin D and steroids.  He is very good about taking his meds, though, and good about using the litter box.  With the help of his medicines, he's doing very well now.  He's put on weight and is obviously feeling great, based on his happy disposition.  Of course, even when he was at his sickest he was affectionate and friendly as could be.  It's just who he is!   Chester is an incredibly sweet, loving boy who just wants to be with his human.  He'll sit by your desk while you're working and make sure you're doing everything right.  He'll join you for television viewing, or anything you're into.  As long as you're there, that's where he wants to be.  He's curious and engaged, and just a joy to have around.  He's also very playful, for such an elderly gentleman!  He simply has a wonderful disposition and is an all-around good cat.     Chester deserves to have a loving home for the remainder of his life, which may be many years yet, to make up for the horrible first decade of the poor boy's life.  If you're willing to go the extra mile for him, he will repay you a hundred fold.   If you are interested in learning more about this kitty or in adopting him, please click here to email his foster parent. DOB:  6/19/12 Dakota is a chill dude with a short, crooked tail.  He likes to hang out and observe his environment,  but he always down for playing with any type of string toy. Dakota tolerates brushing and petting to an extent, being more on the independent side vs. wanting to glue himself to a human. Dakota's ideal person would have some experience with cats and would give him a chance to relax into his environment.  Though we haven't seen him get involved in mutual grooming sessions, he does get along with most cats and could do well in a home where he was the only kitty or could share the space with other cat tolerant cats. Dakota is ready for his special person to take him home.  If you are interested in learning more about this kitty or in adopting him, please click here to email his foster parent. DOB:  7/20/12 Special Needs: Needs a savvy cat parent  Delilah was rescued as a feral kitten in 2012, off the streets of Canoga Park.  She is quite a special cat and needs a super patient, loving human or humans who will give her time to get comfortable with her new surroundings.  Although Delilah lives in a house with other rescue kitties, she tends to be a bit insecure, and exhibits behavior which translates to bullying behavior to other shy or submissive kitties.  That is why I believe she will thrive most in an “only cat” home.  This will allow her sweet personality to come to the foreground, without having to worry about the mixing of personalities.  Delilah has been living in a home with a very mild mannered, well behaved foster dog.  Their introduction was slow and deliberate with ample time separated, to allow for scent and sounds to become normalized.  Delilah is very playful and will benefit from a loving engaged adopter, who might also be willing to put Delilah on a diet, so that she can shed the weight she has gained from stress eating due to a shared living space with other kitties.  Delilah loves to dip her paws in her water bowl/fountain, so she will need a towel under her water bowl, or an absorbing or silicone mat to allow her natural instincts to thrive without conflicting with human rules.  I will remain involved and available for as long as necessary to accommodate Delilah’s smooth transition to her furever home, and will help the proper home with any advice on how to better bond with her.  She truly is a special kitty who will jump into the lap of anyone sitting down, and demand pets and give head-butts, and will make a loving, eccentric lap kitty for a patient and savvy adopter, who will give her the time and attention she deserves to be the awesome kitty she already is.  Please look into your heart and see if this scrumptious, sassy “only kitty” is the right fit for your home.   Instagram: @niloo_rescues_animals If you are interested in learning more about this kitty or in adopting her, please click here to email her foster parent. DOB:  11/13/12 **** SPECIAL NEEDS*****SEIZURE DISORDER****   When we saw Devon at a city shelter we couldn't help getting him out. He has beautiful gold eyes and who can resist a tripod kitty?! We can't imagine how he survived on the streets fending for himself with only three legs, but somehow this resilient kitty did. When Devon arrived at our sanctuary, he was friendly and easy going, but one day he had a mood swing and became very aggressive. At that time we also noticed that there were some physical tics and realized he was having a seizure. We took him to a vet and started him on anti-seizure medication, and we were happy to see him stabilize and become again the happy, easy going kitty that he was when he first arrived. He gets medication three times a day.    Devon likes to nap on the beds around the sanctuary with his belly in the air and his legs akimbo. He enjoys getting pets and rubbing affectionately rubbing his head on people's legs. He will sometimes swat at people as the walk past him to get their attention for pets.    Devon is tolerant of the other cats that he lives with, but would also be happy as a solo kitty.  If you are interested in learning more about this kitty or in adopting him, please click here to email his foster parent. He is a big hunk of love that weighs in at 13lbs.  He is super loving and affectionate but is shy when he meets new people. It is easy to win him over with some head scritches and petting.  Draco would be okay adopted into a single-cat household or into a home with a female cat. He does have a buddy that he likes to hang out with, a black cat named Lily. You can ask his foster mom about her. DOB: 3/13/18 Duke was found on the streets of Lancaster where a good Samaritan picked him up. She was unable to keep Duke, so he came to live at the Kitten Rescue Sanctuary.  Duke likes attention and pets from people, but it looks like he would prefer to be an only cat. Duke currently lives at the Kitten Rescue Sanctuary, so we can't say if he will sleep on your bed and steal the pillow, or if he will run to the door to greet you when you come home. What we do know is that he is pretty easy going when we handle him, he enjoys pets, and will probably be a chill dude to binge watch your favorite show with.  We suspect he will be a fan of windows to gaze out of and sunny places to nap.  If you are interested in learning more about this kitty or in adopting him, please click here to email his foster parent. DOB: 4/7/18 Sisters Ellen and Portia are looking for a furever home together.  Ellen and Portia are special, darling creatures.  They love a good treat and are super sweet, but shy, so it will take some time for them to get used to a new family.  Portia loves to hang out under her foster Mom’s bed, then comes out for her pets and attention, which she revels in. Ellen, who is FIV+, also loves to be caressed and doted upon.  Portia has the most beautiful soprano mew, but doesn’t always show off her singing skills.  These two love the family dog, who tolerates their adoration of him.
