About Preacher

Talk about a gentle giant! Preacher is 120 pounds of snuggly love.   It was clear from the moment he stepped off the PAWS van that Preacher was one special pup. He was brought to ACCT Philly by a heartbroken owner who felt they couldn’t give him the ongoing senior care he deserved in his golden years. They described him as a “big bundle of joy,” and when you meet him, you’ll agree! Preacher radiates love and kindness, and greets everyone he meets like an old friend. Now this gentle giant is seeking a stair-free home (ideally with a yard!) where he can share his beautiful personality with you.    Unfortunately, Preacher was recently diagnosed with a fairly advanced cancer, and is now receiving palliative care in our hospice program. We'd love to find him an adoptive home where he can live out his remaining days and consult with a full-service veterinarian to make sure he stays as comfortable as possible in a loving home.   If you’d like to take home this big galoot, email foster@phillypaws.org with Preacher’s name in the subject line, or apply for him at phillypaws.org/adopt! Age: 11 years. How I came to PAWS: Surrendered by his owner to the city shelter.  Animal ID#: 49207 Weight: 122 lbs.  This beautiful brindle baby is Barley! Her sweet personality and gentle behavior have won over everyone she meets, so be prepared to fall in love with this sweet girl.  If you’ve been following us on social media, you might recognize the puppy-dog eyes from her well-documented medical journey. If not, let us catch you up: Barley came to  PAWS with a rubber band embedded around her wrist as well as some mobility issues in her hind legs. When we went in to do surgery, we found out she has a blood clotting disorder. It made her journey to recovery a bit of an emotional rollercoaster. While she may always struggle with some mild mobility obstacles in her hind legs, she’s doing amazing with her recovery! Most of the time, you'd never know she had an issue.  Though Barley can be a little shy when meeting new people, this couch potato is as sweet as can be once she trusts you. She's a great snuggle buddy and would be happy to hang out with you in bed all day. She'd do well in a moderately active home that can take her on regular walks so she maintains her strength. We also think she could live with another large, well-mannered dog -- though she would like to meet them first! According to her foster, Barley does really well in her crate and has also done well with house training thus far. She is an intelligent pup and would love an adoptive home that will continue to work with her on leash manners and basic commands and maybe even teach her some new skills!  Age: 5 years How I came to PAWS: Found Stray Animal ID#: 48884 Weight: 52lbs Mixed breed (It’s impossible to identify breed mix by sight alone, so for most dogs, their mix is only a guess.  Cuddly and snuggly, lover of life and friendship, Beethoven (Bae) wants to be there beside you for it all! At 3 years old, Beethoven has all the energy to play with toys and go on nice walks, but has an equal amount of dedication to his naps (especially with at least one paw touching his human family!). Truly a neighborhood celebrity already, he leaves everyone smiling who meets him. While he loves giving and feeling the love from adults and older children (12 years and up), he does get a little too excited around other animals and would do best as the only pet in the home at this time. He is a 10/10 with “sit” and “lay down,” and is working on “stay” and “paw.” Beethoven's owner should be prepared to work on impulse control, and basic manners in the home. He tends to jump a little when playing and is working on keeping all paws on the ground. Beethoven is not a fan of alone time, so he'd prefer a household with rotating schedules, or an owner who works from home, especially while he transitions to a new environment. He is a quick learner, and dreams of spending his life with a family who will love him as much as he loves them!  Accio kitty! Unlike her name, sweet Bellatrix is a shy, quiet girl who loves nothing more than to curl up on a lazy day. This beautiful, all-black cat would be the perfect companion for your Netflix binges and reading marathons. No judgment from her! Her favorite place in the house is her bed, and honestly, can't we all relate? She also loves basking in the sun and playing with her toy fish. Petite little Trixie is slow-to-warm-up but once she feels comfortable, she gets very attached to her people. Her striking green eyes and quiet mews are sure to melt your heart! And despite the black cat myths, I'm sure she will bring nothing but love into your home. Due to her shy nature, Bellatrix would be most compatible with a family without dogs or small children. She has never lived with other cats, but she could do okay with another cat with a calm temperament. With just a little love and patience, Trixie will soon be your official snuggle buddy and door greeter. She can't wait to meet you!  Binky Barnes should be mad that the world decided to give him so many obstacles to hurdle all at once, but he decided to treat the world more like his toy and to be a happy, quirky, fun loving dude instead! After being found stray with an eye infection, he was transferred to PAWS where he had surgery to fix the entropion for his right eye. After a few weeks of battling colds, we ran a few more tests and discovered he is positive for both FIV and FeLV, as well as having the feline herpesvirus. He'll need a special home to manage his long term medical needs, since he is likely to have recurring eye infections, as well as an adult only home where he can be the only pet and your center of attention. Binky can get overstimulated at times, but with proper enrichment to keep him active you'll also get to enjoy all of his lovely and irresistible cuddle positions! If you're ready to he his hero, he'll happily be your sidekick!    **Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) is a virus that is specific to cats that attacks and weakens a cat’s immune system. Cats with FeLV can live normal, happy, healthy lives—with a shorter life expectancy than cats without FeLV. In the past, cats with FeLV in shelters were euthanized as soon as they were diagnosed. PAWS takes a different stance: we enable FeLV+ cats to live out their lives in loving homes. For more information feel free to check out the FeLV FAQs we have available on our website!**  **FIV is specific to the feline species, and is not transmissible to dogs, humans, or any other animals. It is spread from cat to cat via mating or deep puncture bite wounds. Thankfully, all our cats are spayed or neutered so mating is no longer an option! Since FIV does not spread through casual contact like grooming, sneezing, and food/litter sharing, FIV+ cats can live with other cats that have tested negative as long as the cats get along without fighting.** Age: 4-6 years old How I came to PAWS:  Animal ID#: A49259 Location: PAWS Grays Ferry Clinic. This is not a walk-in facility, so please email adoptions@phillypaws.org to set up a time to meet this kitty!_____________________________________ To adopt a cat, complete the application at phillypaws.org/catapp.To adopt a dog, complete the application at phillypaws.org/dogapp.            Please reference this animal's ID NUMBER when inquiring.  Blue's heart is as big and soft as she is! Blue Bell is goofy, animated, and super loyal. She loves curling up on the couch, but also gets the zoomies on occasion, and wants to play tug of war with her toys. Blue loves people, though she does take some time to warm up to new faces. Once she is comfortable with you, she will be your best friend! She does well on a leash (even if she does pump the brakes for interesting smells), and is currently learning about crate training to help her feel less anxious when she's alone. Blue will thrive in a quiet, dog-experienced adult household where she can continue to work on getting comfortable with new faces. She'd be happy to live with another large dog, and has let us know she's especially partial to male pups. Blue is a really special lady who is truly devoted to the people she loves.  This handsome boy with the pink stripe across his face is precious, playful and super chill. It is no surprise that Leo Bowie was cared for by members of the neighborhood where he used to hang out - he is super friendly, will come when called/whistled - he just wants to hang out, get chin scratches, laze around, with some intermittent play here and there. It IS a huge surprise that this guy was not a former house cat, that we know of anyway - he uses the litter box readily and neatly, he does not scratch furniture (perfectly content with two scratching posts/toys), and loves to watch television. He almost immediately acclimated to our Center City home with two small children, including gentle play and snuggles with my high-energy youngest child from whom most animals keep their distance. While working from home during the ongoing pandemic, Bowie has been a perfect office companion - sleepily laying nearby or purring quietly at my side. He has a distinct and almost musical MEOW but uses it sparingly - sometimes to say hello, ask for a treat, or when he is exploring a new space/room. Thanks to our Nest cam, we know that, when left solo for a bit, he prefers to cat nap and, every now and then, will entertain himself with his toys (he loves the mouse on a string tumbler toy). Leo Bowie has tested positive for FIV. Based on interactions in the shelter, Leo Bowie appears to be cat friendly. His FIV status does not exclude him from homes with other cats. He should also not be around outdoor cats who could bring his weakened immune system into contact with other illnesses. Leo Bowie has showed zero signs of aggression under a variety of challenging circumstances, including transitioning from street to shelter to our home - all while requiring daily medication for wound treatment and/or eye drops. He completed his antibiotics without problem, and is finishing up his eye drops. Leo Bowie is an easy going, gorgeous boy who we just love love love! He will provide joy and companionship to his future family.  Age: 4 years How I came to PAWS: Found with an open wound in the neighborhood where he lived outdoors, fed by members of the community Animal ID#: A49287 I'm not at the shelter.  Cammy is a doe-eyed sweetheart who is looking for a quiet and calm, adult-only household. Cammy was surrendered to ACCT when her owner could no longer keep her, and is still learning how to trust people again. She is a petite, but active lady who would benefit from a home with a yard, and someone who can keep her mind and body happy through physical and mental enrichment. She loves playing with toys and could play fetch for hours! Cammy is rather nervous around new people, so an adopter who lives in a quieter part of town, or outside of the city would be ideal. Once Cammy warms up, she will hop in your lap like she's your new best friend. She loves affection and cuddling up with her human at night. Cammy could live with another respectful medium or small dog, though there may be an adjustment period while she gets used to sharing a space. Since Cammy is used to having someone around all the time, she would love an adopter with rotating schedules, or who works from home - She does tend to vocalize when left alone, so she is not well suited for apartment complexes. An ideal owner would be someone who has experience with managing anxiety in dogs, and will be prepared to contact a trainer or behaviorist to help her through future issues.  Sassy and Beautiful: Meet Miss Cora! Cora (nicknamed Moo Moo) is the prettiest cow cat with the loudest purrs in the world. As soon as we saw Moo Moo in the shelter, we had a hunch that she was a special cat– and we were right! Her first day or two in the foster home were quiet, but after that, it was as if a light had switched. We began to see Moo Moo for who she really is– not as the shy, scared shelter cat we saw days earlier, but a curious and playful little diva. Moo Moo is the perfect cat, even for first time cat owners. She loves to play, but also needs her space. She has the brightest green eyes, and is a perfect litterbox user. She likes your attention, but won’t ask too much of you. And being only 1-2 years old, she has her whole life ahead of her! What makes Moo Moo so special is that even though she may need some time to feel comfortable around unfamiliar faces and places, she so desperately wants to be your best friend! *as you can see, all of her photos are taken while she's lounging in her bed, her favorite place in the world!  Ebony is a super affectionate senior lady! Ebony is such a sweet and special cat. She has a super cute sassy little moan she does when she doesn't like something or just when she feels like being extra sassy that day. She is a fairly shy cat at first and will require someone with a little patience to allow her to get acclimated to her new home. It might take some time to show her personality, but once she does you'll have the perfect work-from-home buddy. She loves her head and cheeks scratched and will sit in your lap content with scratches for hours! Ebony will do best in a home without other animals or young children.  Say hello to the matriarch of the 4th Floor, Ethel Beavers (though, not during office hours, since it isn't recommended that you make eye contact with anyone while on the 4th Floor). She came to PAWS on the personal recommendation of former Mayor Gunderson, and after having some inhouse dental work she is ready to relax and retire at home! If you're looking for a dark horse candidate to be your new best friend or to adopt as your new grandmom, you've come to the right place! She may look grumpy at times, but deep down she has a sweet, cuddly, and friendly soul and isn't above helping you make a cheesy declaration of love - just don't expect her to wait in the car.  Just try not to fall in love with handsome Ferdinand! This 71 pound lap dog is a goofball by day and love-bug by night. An energetic and outgoing sweetheart who always means well, he just needs to brush up on some of his manners, but he's very food motivated and eager to learn! He’ll thrive in a home that can provide some structure and enrichment, and because he's very strong, someone with solid leash handling skills or a fenced-in yard would be ideal. He would love to live with another large dog, though we are unsure about cats and small dogs at this time. Ferdinand was found tied to a fence at Animal Control, so it is understandable that uncertainty can be a source of stress for him. An adopter should be prepared for some ups and downs as he transitions to a new home, but once he has settled in, he's a really easy-going snuggle buddy who wants to curl up with you for a nap! Age: 4 Years How I came to PAWS: Abandoned at ACCT  Animal ID#:49205 Weight: 71lbs Mixed breed (It’s impossible to identify breed mix by sight alone, so for most dogs, their mix is only a guess. We get to know each dog as an individual and strive to make matches based on personality, not on breed label.) Location: Foster Care All our dog meets are by appointment only; to get started, please complete the adoption application.  'Ole Blue Eyes had a rough go of it before joining up with the PAWS Pack, and Frank here will have you swooning over his mellow mood and voice in no time! He's looking to book a permanent gig at home with you, so if you're interested in adding his talents to your catalog just submit an application today! Frank is FIV+ and also has a heart murmur that will need monitoring and care for the rest of his. He also came into the shelter with an unknown wound on his foot, so he would need to be kept separate from other animals until the first week of August. Age: 2-4 years old How I came to PAWS: Found Stray Animal ID#: A49399 Location: Grays Ferry Clinic. Please email adoptions@phillypaws.org to learn more about this kitty! **FIV is specific to the feline species, and is not transmissible to dogs, humans, or any other animals. It is spread from cat to cat via mating or deep puncture bite wounds. Thankfully, all our cats are spayed or neutered so mating is no longer an option! Since FIV does not spread through casual contact like grooming, sneezing, and food/litter sharing, FIV+ cats can live with other cats that have tested negative as long as the cats get along without fighting._____________________________________ To adopt a cat, complete the application at phillypaws.org/catapp.To adopt a dog, complete the application at phillypaws.org/dogapp.            Please reference this animal's ID NUMBER when inquiring.  Sweet little Harriet is an adorable, curious lady who can't wait to meet you! Harriet is an easygoing, independent lady who would love a new home to explore and find all the coziest nooks to curl up in! If she's not curled up in the sun by the window, she can usually be found snoozing in any cardboard box you might have left out! Her beautiful green eyes will melt your heart right away, and she'll never pass up an opportunity for scratches behind the ears. She is very independent, and would love to be the only cat in her new family! Despite recently losing a toe on her front paw, Harriet never misses an opportunity to play, and would chase yarn all day if you let her! Harriet is gentle and sweet, but she can get overstimulated easily, especially when adjusting to a new environment, so she would love to be in a home with adults only so that she can relax and let her personality shine! She would love to have a family that is patient with her while she gains confidence in her new home, and you'll fall in love with her in no time! Age: 7 years How I came to PAWS: Harriet came to PAWS after having surgery to remove a toe on her front paw. She is doing much better now and back to her old self!  With the playfulness and curiosity of a kitten and the cuddliness of an older lady, Happy Heidi is a spirited gal who loves to jump and play with her toys, sunbathe for hours and birdwatch, cuddle with (or on) her human, and watch diligently for any mice invaders. She has a big personality and an even bigger purr, which we’re pretty sure you can hear from space. She's a fan of treats and chin scratches, and we know you'll be a fan of her fuzzy pink belly and multicolored nose and toe beans! She’s definitely the type of confident queen who would prefer to be the only kitty in the house. She can get overstimulated easily, so she’d love a child-free family who is knowledgeable about feisty cat behaviors. If you can be patient with her and give her a chance to shine, she’ll be a fantastic companion who will give you lovey eyes and head boops for years to come. Age: ~8 years old  How I came to PAWS: Surrendered to the local Philly shelter after 8 years with the same family due to a few middle-aged lady aches and pains.
