Abracadabra A222076 Abracadabra is a 2 year old spayed female who came into the shelter on 3/22/21 as an owner surrender. Handling video: https://youtu.be/aZaTOOARtDY Poor Abracadabra was returned after a few months for being too dog reactive. We knew she needed to be an only pet during her first stay and so did potential adopters. This world is full of only dogs, reactive to outside world type dogs, that live happy lives in homes willing to work with them. Abracadabra will need a family that understands her needs and loves her as a one and only. The little gal that left us last year came back all grown up (and in)! She’s a little cute chunk now but her ears still are the same spell casters we remember. Abracadabra is easy to leash and very engaging with her handler. She definitely didn’t love come back to the shelter and let staff know her displeasure but since that has seem to come to terms. She’s learned some new commands like down and takes her treats gently. Abracadabra allows all over handling and is respectful of our personal when we were down on her level. Every dog dreams of big grassy fenced backyards to romp around in but they don’t all need them to be happy. It certainly worked on us. Abracadabra is ready to get out of her kennel when it's her turn to get outside for some fresh air. This girl is sweet and playful and will nail her 'sit' for a treat each time she is asked. Abracadabra's tail wags and she seems to looooove human attention. This gal is on the smaller side and seems to have been well taken care of. And not to state the obvious but... how cute is she?! Abracadabra is awesome. show less

She was dropped off at the front desk without any information; left most likely by her owner. Ashlyn was still plump with milk from her last litter too. When we approached her kennel she wasn’t the smiling dog from her intake photo anymore. She was clearly sad and confused but was easy to get outside. Ashlyn owner searched most of our first day out. She allowed handling all over and even found a little energy to play briefly with toys. After a few days, Ashlyn was less upset about being a shelter dog. She loves to play and has great energy with toys, nothing over the top. She’s gentle taking treats and sits on command. Ashlyn cuddles perfectly and really soaks up any attention given her way. She’s pretty darn perfect. show less

She is just a baby herself but already has had at least one litter of puppies. Beverly was very nervous her first few days at the shelter. The noise level can be overwhelming. She would do a lot of pancakes and freezes in fear when it became too much. Despite her unsureness, Beverly allowed handling all over. It took her a few days to feel completely comfortable and fully engage. Now Beverly knows that the volunteers are there to help her. She gives us tail wags when it is her turn to go for a walk and leans in for pets whenever we stop moving. Beverly takes treats gently and is working on her commands. She came to us underweight and continues to be food motivated. She seems under socialized with other animals and not sure what to do. Her best life would include continued training in a pet free home so she can work up to making dog friends if possible. Because this guy's personality is explosive! Boom is a young, energetic boy (did I say energetic?) who busts out epic zoomies the second you drop that leash. Boom is so excited to be outside and surrounded by toys. This one! This one! No, that one!! Boom can't decide which toy is THE ONE. Just take them all Boom. Boom knows sit but has ants in his pants and just can't sit still! Boom will need a home dedicated to his training and helping him burn off some energy. Boom takes play time seriously! He doesn't really need you there except to cheer him on - he self-entertains with the best of them. Pretty sure Boom has never had any guidance in his young life, so a structured environment where his energy can be directed to productive endeavors would be the ideal fit. Look at Boom and try not to smile, go ahead, we'll wait. show less

That's just what we want to do to that little pink and black nose! Boop is a fun girl with some junk her trunk and passion to party! Boop knows sit but would much rather be bouncing around with a toy. Boop doesn't have much interest in our treats, perhaps she has a more discerning palate than our cheap shelter treats can satisfy. She likes toys and loves getting her little wiggle butt scratched. Boop has the most perfect little ears that almost fit her pittie head. Boop is definitely a confident gal who has seen a bit of the world and is ready to settle down with a family of her own. Boop is easy to leash up, only pulls a little, and is happy to let your pet her all over! show less

Chai A225397 Chai is a 5 year old spayed female who came into the shelter on 3/13/21 as a stray. Handling video: https://youtu.be/fXtmTIVNQ-o A little smooth and a little spicy (like her namesake), this pint-sized girl is easy to leash up and easy to walk out. Chai is so small that you’ll barely notice she’s there! Chai has done lots of owner searching so far and can be a little hard to connect with at first— she seems to be more interested in what’s going on around her which is understandable in these new surroundings. Chai, while she looks like she’s just a pup, seems to be an adult dog with some wear and tear and tartar on her teeth. She’s a good communicator and will allow handling but will also let you know when she’s uncomfortable, of which we appreciate the heads up greatly. She doesn’t show any command knowledge yet but has shown some interest in squeaky toys and treats but again, hey— she’s new here. We’ll continue to spend time with Chai and get to know her and if her family doesn’t come find her soon, we’re hopeful that a rescue will be looking for a perfect apartment sized dog and scoop her up quickly. show less

Who can blame him though. He is slow to come out of his kennel and hates going back inside too. Earnest is low key inside, usually quietly laying in the back corner out of sight. He can be suspicious of the leash but doesn’t put up a big fight coming out. Earnest has mellow energy like an older dog but it’s hard to tell his age by appearance. Outside Earnest is still a mellow guy that doesn’t ask for much. He does some owner searching but will also engage with him handler. Earnest allows handling all over, really enjoys butt scratches, and his happy just to be next to someone. He doesn’t show much interest in toy or treats, hates getting his picture taken, and doesn’t appear to know any commands. We might never see the full personality Earnest hides under his shelter worries so a home that allows him to come out of his shell at his own pace is best. show less

Erin is a pouty girl in her kennel but very patient while waiting for her turn. She is easy to leash and walks well through the yard. Erin really only has one thing on her mind - treats! She will give you rock-solid eye contact and nails her sit every time. She will accept treat after treat after treat. Did we say she was treat motivated, oh yeah! She wants them like she has never ate before. We don't understand why she is so hungry, she definitely doesn't look underfed. Erin needs work on her approach and can be a bit jumpy for them but also can catch them at a professional degree. Erin allows handling all over and plays nicely with toys. Erin has a beautiful coat and is all around gorgeous too. She doesn't want to spend much time running around if there are still treats to eat. She is a hoot! show less

Ferris is a straight up Chicago special - tough on the outside, but with a big heart. Ferris came to the shelter as a stray pretty unsure and very defensive. He said heck no the first time we tried to take him out of his kennel. Fast forward a few days and hello handsome....we decided we were okay. Ferris is easy to leash up, but does pull some on leash. Ferris clearly hasn't lived a life of luxury; our guess is that he was an outside dog, maybe a guard dog. While he is sweet as pie, he is very easily distracted by any goings while we are walking. He has a hard time focusing because he has major FOMO - fear of missing out. Our wish is for Ferris to end up in a home where he is the star of the show and gets all the love and attention he has obviously been lacking. Ferris is easy to leash up, no issues with kennel return and takes treats nicely. show less

Her young owner suddenly passed away in a tragic situation. After living with her owner’s mother, she was surrendered because it was too hard emotionally for the family. Grief is experienced differently and we shouldn’t pass judgement on anyone’s decisions. Grai is definitely confused about her new environment. She came forward and was easy to leash to get outside. She’s a petite lady with manners. Grai spent a lot of time pacing and owner searching. Her quiet cries for her home were heartbreaking to hear. Grai wasn’t interested in toys or treats but did allow handling all over. We hope to get to know her more as she settles into her new normal. Grai and her broken heart are looking for a new home to mend in. She and her friend Tortoise were both anxious and a little codependent. Harriet was the more reserved of the two initially. She was hesitant about the leash and slow to come out of her kennel. She froze in fear from the loudness inside when she wasn’t trying to dart away. Harriet wasn’t completely comfortable her first few days with handling and would bark to let us know. It was clear she was just unsure. With a slow approach we were able to handle her all over. Harriet sits on command and takes treats gently. She loves treats and will boss bark us into giving her our whole stash. She can still be a bit nervous meeting new people and still loves her friend (baby daddy?) Tortoise. We really can’t believe their owners haven’t come looking for them. Their loss will be some lucky family’s gain. show less

It seems he spent quite a bit of time on the streets - you can see some evidence of some old wounds, his thinning fur, fairly underweight, and probably has had to fend for himself for a while. But we also get the distinct sense that he craves human connection. After Hubert spent some time exploring the play yard independently, paying no attention to the human with him, we saw a different side of him once we got inside. He immediately wanted to sit next to us. At one point he sat on top of our feet and enjoyed gentle petting over his face and back. He even allowed us to clean his eyes a little. Hubert would wander away for a few moments and then quickly return to our side. Heartbreaking as it might seem, we are grateful he landed at the shelter. Now we can show him what love is really about. We’re going to make sure he has nutritious food, positive human interactions and opportunity to meet with other dogs. show less

He was super easy to handle even right after being surrendered. Don't let his wide eyes fool you, it's not surprise or shock, just great eye contact. Kenzo has solid leash manners and knows basic commands. He sits when asked and takes treats gently. His first day nerves went away pretty quickly, especially after a few hugs. That is Kenzo’s thing, he’s a big hugger. He plays nicely with toys and has great zoomies when he’s excited. Kenzo is still a young guy and has already been passed around between homes. Handling video: https://youtu.be/E7eScRYfp1U Leash test: https://youtu.be/hLID3YTl2T8 Kilt might not have the luck of the Irish but tartan looks beautiful against her red hair. Kilt lays in her kennel in the most adorable way, always with her front paws crossed like a lady. She came to us way to thin and an ear that looks like something to a bite out of it long ago. Other than that she wasn’t in too rough of shape and fairly clean. She is one of the calm dogs and easy to leash. Kilt is surprisingly long legged and still pretty strong for her frail frame. Once the fresh air hits her face, she comes to life. Kilt loves to play with toys and explore the lot. She knows basic commands and takes treats gently. Most skinny dogs are persistent on getting all of our treats but not this girl. We almost had to beg her to take the first few and after that she was nonchalant about additional ones. Kilt loves attention but doesn’t demand it. She happily wags her tail when we pet her and will cuddle if invited but doesn’t jump all over us when down at her level. Her body tells a story of hardship but not her attitude. Kilt is ready for her luck to change for the better, that starts with a family to call her own. show less

Lechita A225905 Lechita is a 3 year old female who came into the shelter on 3/29 as an owner surrender. She has a deer in headlights look in her eyes constantly. The first week at the shelter all she did was shake when we took her out of her kennel. Just like the other dog she was surrendered with, Lechita is underweight and scarred up. We would guess it was a not enough food for two dogs and fed out of the same bowl situation that led to confrontation. Lechita devoured her first meal before we took her out. She wasn’t as famished once we met her and almost hesitated taking her treats. Lechita would freeze a lot outside but did let us handle her all over. She plays like she doesn’t understand commands and hasn’t shown us even a sit, but she is gentle taking treats. Lechita doesn’t shake so much when we take her out but we are still waiting to see her playful side. Her energy has been mellow so far. Lechita let us know that she is cool leaving her former life behind, including her housemate. She deserves to have a new life surrounded by positive experiences.
