Personality: Adam is an affectionate, happy, elderly boy who enjoys casual strolls and loads of cuddle time. He truly loves to be near his people and can become vocal when left alone. He'll benefit from plenty of snuggle time, some gentle exercise, and a predictable routine. Adam will make a great companion for someone looking for a little shadow to be by their side and make them smile. History: Adam came to us from central valley. Dog/Cat Skills: Adam participates in small dog playgroups and is currently co-housed with another small dog. He will politely greet other dogs and follow them around the yard, but does try to mount sometimes. He will also calmly explore the yard and peacefully coexist with dogs. Leash Skills: Adam walks politely on leash but does benefit from a soft harness to help take pressure off his neck, common for his breed. Medical: Adam does have periodontal disease (also known as gum disease or dental disease). This disease is extremely common in dogs and cats, especially as they age. Periodontal disease occurs when bacterial plaque causes inflammation of the gums and eventual destruction of the bone in which the teeth are anchored. Adam had a dental cleaning recently at HSSV. At that time, he was anesthetized and all the teeth were cleaned with an ultrasonic scaler to remove tartar and plaque. The teeth were then polished to prevent premature tartar build up. The teeth were evaluated for fractures, and periodontal disease. Teeth that were determined to be unhealthy were removed. Dental care is an on-going process that will need to be addressed for the life of this patient. The adopting family is encouraged to discuss continuing dental care for this patient with their family veterinarian or a veterinary dentist. Personality: Badger is a lovely boy who has done well with other dogs and loves meeting new people. Badger was doing really well with house training in his foster home. She would use an exercise pen for when he was not being monitored which helped. He is fine spending time alone and amusing himself, but he does well with good exercise beforehand. He loves adults and children. His foster said that he knows "go to your room" as a crate command and that he waits nicely for his treat once going in. We have been working on "off" as he likes to put his paws up on people but he is excited and he has not fully mastered it yet.History: Badger came to us from another shelter then spent some time in a foster home with two small dogs.Dog/Cat skills: Badger can be uncomfortable meeting new dogs initially. He does best with calm, polite dogs that can help him adjust at his own pace. He has been a great buddy for my two small dogs and was reactive only when there was a fence between him and a neighbor dog. He has not been around cats.Medical: Badger had a dental in our care. It showed he may have some poor enamel quality due to a congenital condition (he was born with this tendency) or due to exposure to a medication or a virus when he was very young. The poor enamel will make him more prone to dental disease. He had 2 incisors (front teeth) removed due to crown fractures.Brushing the teeth daily with a soft toothbrush and toothpaste designed for pets will significantly improve this dog's dental health and possibly his general health in the future. However, he is likely to require veterinary dental care throughout his lifetime. Personality: Celine is a sweet tiny girl! She is a bit shy in new setting but loves to be pet all over. She has a purr motor that could make anyone happy! Celine loves the company of other cats and would do well in a multi cat home. History: Celine came to us from Madera animals shelter. Cat/Dog Skills: Celine has lived with other cats while in our care and has done well. She does not have a history of being around dogs. Medical: Celine developed a condition called symblepharon in both eyes. In this case, the 3rd eyelids adhered to the upper eyelids. This is likely secondary to a previously treated viral infection. A surgery has been performed on this kitten in an attempt to break down the symblepharon and increase the size of the eye openings. It is possible that the symblepharon will re-adhere over time. This limits the vision the same way a curtain covering a window prevents you from fully seeing outside. Fortunately, the loss of vision is not anticipated to negatively impact his quality of life. If successful, this surgery may significantly improve her vision.Ready to meet me ? Personality: Comet is a fun, energetic, playful & goofy boy. He is very social and is wiggly when meeting new people. He likes the outdoors and enjoys going on long walks and runs. He would benefit from daily physical and mental exercise. He would do well with a family that has some herding breed experience. He also loves going to the beach and playing in the sand. As energetic as he is, Comet also loves to curl up and relax with you. He is very intelligent and easy to train. He picks up commands quickly and is already good with the basics. Comet did well in his foster home with a routine potty schedule. He also did well getting left alone when provided exercises and had his bed and chew toys to keep him occupied. History: Comet came to us from the central valley. Dog Skills/Cat Skills: Comet does try to greet every dog he meets, but can be too forward. Comet tends to be vocal and bossy in play with dogs, and may target/pick on less confident dogs. Comet does enjoy chase and physical contact play, but does not always listen to corrections. He has shown to do best with females and social, polite playful dogs who can tolerate his very vocal, pushy play style. No history with cats but adopters should be aware of breed tendencies.Leash Skills: Comet pulls while walking on a leash and would benefit from the use of a front clipping harness. Personality: Cranberry is your typical high flying husky with a ton of energy and then some! She is fun-loving and pretty much ready for anything. She can be talkative, just like any husky, and is a great running partner (if you're into that kind of thing). While Cranberry does enjoy a good petting session (and will need several brushing sessions) she is a dog on the go and will thrive on lots of mental and physical exertion. She would do best with a working breed experienced family. History: Cranberry came to us from the central valley. Dog Skills: She participates in dog playgroups and is very forward and rowdy. She does have a tendency to be bossy with less confident dogs and likes to solicit play by pawing and pouncing on dogs backs. She does not always listen to corrections so Cranberry does best with confident, playful dogs who can tolerate her vocal, physical play style.Cat Skills: While at HSSV Cranberry has shown hyper-focus and vocalization towards feral cats behind the fence while in a dog park.Leash Skills: Cranberry will pull on leash and benefits from a front clip harness. Personality: Frank Sinatra is a charming, friendly, social kitty who loves getting showered with attention. He is made of pure love so don't let his grumpy face fool you! He loves to snuggle and sit on laps. He also enjoys wand toys and laying in sunspots in his room. History: Frank came to us as a stray.Cat/Dog Skills: Frank has not been exposed to dogs while in our care and had no reactions at the sight of other cats. He has not been cohoused, however. Medical: Frank may have a flea allergy, which means that the pet is allergic to flea bites. Pets with this condition can develop very itchy skin and hair loss even when they only have a few fleas. While at HSSV, this pet has been treated with monthly flea prevention, such as Advantage or Frontline. The new adopters are advised to keep up with monthly flea prevention in order to control this possible flea allergy. If monthly flea control alone is not controlling the skin condition, the adopting family is advised to consult their family veterinarian for further treatment options.Frank had a dental cleaning recently at HSSV. Personality: Gary is a little guy with a big personality! He likes to zoom around and loves to cuddle. He gets chilly so he's happy to wear a sweater and his foster mom has given him a little wardrobe. He likes other dogs, cats and even kids and he doesn't take up much space. He is so excited to go into a home that will give him all the love and attention he deserves! He goes potty consistently on the pee pads and responds to going outside when his foster says "go pee-pee". He sleeps in his xpen and is quiet throughout the night. He's only been left alone an hour or so and my own dog has been with him. His foster thinks he could be left alone for up to 4 hours without barking/whining. Gary is very eager to meet new people and allowed his foster's little grandson to walk him on a leash. He's very trainable and loving. He hasn't had the benefit of formal training since we were working on potty training first, but he's a smart little guy. He likes to give "kisses" by licking.History: Gary's been living in a foster home with dogs, cats, and has been around his foster's grandson and done well. Dog/Cat Skills: Gary loves other dogs and cats and wants to play with them. Leash Skills: Gary walks well on leash.Medical: Gary has LEFT hip dysplasia. Fortunately, at this time, there is no evidence of osteoarthritis in his hips on x-ray. While at HSSV, this dog has been receiving a glucosamine joint supplement and pain medication as needed. These medications will likely be needed for the rest of his life. Please see your regular veterinarian regarding the best treatment options for him.Gary arrived at HSSV with a large unhaired scar over the top of his head. At this time the skin appears free from infection or inflammation. We recommend that his adopter use dog sunscreen (available through pet stores and online retailers) to protect this vulnerable area from sun exposure when he is outdoors for extended periods of time- dogs, just like humans can develop sunburns on exposed skin.He has a little "go bag" of his harness, leash, and clothes to go home with him! Personality: Gregory is a social, smart, athletic dog that is waiting for his forever home! He can be jumpy and excitable so it's good to reward him for keeping all four paws on the floor. Gregory is a high energy dog and would make an excellent running or hiking partner. Gregory would do best in a breed experienced, adult household who can provide plenty of physical and mental exercise as well as basic training to help guide him. History: He came to us from another animal shelter. Dog/Cat Skills: Gregory can be overwhelmed and sensitive to forward, rowdy dogs. He prefers polite meets and has done well in a playgroup setting with calm, polite female dogs. He enjoys playing chase with minimal physical contact. He will correct dogs that are rude. He has a true shepherd play style and will mouth at the backs of other dogs in play and chase, and can be vocal and bossy. He has been introduced to several dogs on and off-leash, and needs appropriate, tolerant matches to be successful. We have not seen Gregory around cats.
