Personality: Adam is an affectionate, happy, elderly boy who enjoys casual strolls and loads of cuddle time. He truly loves to be near his people and can become vocal when left alone. He'll benefit from plenty of snuggle time, some gentle exercise, and a predictable routine. Adam will make a great companion for someone looking for a little shadow to be by their side and make them smile. History: Adam came to us from central valley. Dog/Cat Skills: Adam participates in small dog playgroups and is currently co-housed with another small dog. He will politely greet other dogs and follow them around the yard, but does try to mount sometimes. He will also calmly explore the yard and peacefully coexist with dogs. Leash Skills: Adam walks politely on leash but does benefit from a soft harness to help take pressure off his neck, common for his breed. Medical: Adam does have periodontal disease (also known as gum disease or dental disease). This disease is extremely common in dogs and cats, especially as they age. Periodontal disease occurs when bacterial plaque causes inflammation of the gums and eventual destruction of the bone in which the teeth are anchored. Adam had a dental cleaning recently at HSSV. At that time, he was anesthetized and all the teeth were cleaned with an ultrasonic scaler to remove tartar and plaque. The teeth were then polished to prevent premature tartar build up. The teeth were evaluated for fractures, and periodontal disease. Teeth that were determined to be unhealthy were removed. Dental care is an on-going process that will need to be addressed for the life of this patient. The adopting family is encouraged to discuss continuing dental care for this patient with their family veterinarian or a veterinary dentist. Personality: Ari can be a little shy at first, but warms up quickly. She will become to a velcro dog to her person and wants to be by your side at all times. She absolutely loves to cuddle and insists that she sleep in the bed with you. She rides in the crate nicely in the car but when it comes to sleeping accommodations she is the ultimate bed time snuggler and prefers the bed. She is a total lap dog and would be a great emotional support dog with her mellow personality. She does show sings of stress when left alone so it's recommended she works on leave alone training. She doesn't know how to walk on leash yet and prefers to be carried, or to ride in her doggy pouch for long walks.History: Ari has lived in an adult foster home that is quiet, with 3 other small chihuahuas. She is a peaceful co-exister and really enjoys the company of other polite small dogs. She will correct a more forward or larger dogs so the best match for her would be another older quiet dogs who will respect her space. Ari is overwhelmed with children and should go to a quiet adult household.Dog/Cat Skills: Ari is very social in play group and will happily go up to meet other dogs. If a dog is too forward with her she will let them know she is uncomfortable by giving a small correction. She doesn't love to share laps with other dogs but she does enjoy laying next to them on the couch. Ari has seen a few outdoor cats and will bark at them. She seems more afraid of the cats than anything because they are bigger than her.Leash Skills: Ari has not learned to walk on a leash. In foster took a few weeks to bond before she would follow on leash. She should only learn leash walking in a very quiet area. Will pull backwards out of collar if uncomfortable. It is recommended she wear a martingale collar or soft harness to avoid slipping out of collar. She LOVES to be carried, it is her preferred method of transportation. For long walks she loves to ride in her dog pouch (Which her foster is sending home with her).Medical: Ari had a dental cleaning recently at HSSV. The teeth were evaluated for fractures, and periodontal disease. Teeth that were determined to be unhealthy were removed. Ari likely has a medical condition called chronic bronchitis. This means that she has chronic inflammation of the airways of her lungs. Currently, the bronchitis is causing enough coughing that she is receiving an oral steroid to help alleviate the coughing. She is responding well to this treatment and this condition is usually well controlled with steroids or other medications prescribed by your family veterinarian. Minimizing irritants in the air is always helpful to a dog with bronchitis. We recommend not to allow cigarette smoke in the dog's environment and to regularly replace air filters at home.Ready to meet Ari ? Personality: Comet is a fun, energetic, playful & goofy boy. He is very social and is wiggly when meeting new people. He likes the outdoors and enjoys going on long walks and runs. He would benefit from daily physical and mental exercise. He would do well with a family that has some herding breed experience. He also loves going to the beach and playing in the sand. As energetic as he is, Comet also loves to curl up and relax with you. He is very intelligent and easy to train. He picks up commands quickly and is already good with the basics. Comet did well in his foster home with a routine potty schedule. He also did well getting left alone when provided exercises and had his bed and chew toys to keep him occupied. History: Comet came to us from the central valley. Dog Skills/Cat Skills: Comet does try to greet every dog he meets, but can be too forward. Comet tends to be vocal and bossy in play with dogs, and may target/pick on less confident dogs. Comet does enjoy chase and physical contact play, but does not always listen to corrections. He has shown to do best with females and social, polite playful dogs who can tolerate his very vocal, pushy play style. No history with cats but adopters should be aware of breed tendencies.Leash Skills: Comet pulls while walking on a leash and would benefit from the use of a front clipping harness. Personality: Frank Sinatra is a charming, friendly, social kitty who loves getting showered with attention. He is made of pure love so don't let his grumpy face fool you! He loves to snuggle and sit on laps. He also enjoys wand toys and laying in sunspots in his room. History: Frank came to us as a stray.Cat/Dog Skills: Frank has not been exposed to dogs while in our care and had no reactions at the sight of other cats. He has not been cohoused, however. Medical: Frank may have a flea allergy, which means that the pet is allergic to flea bites. Pets with this condition can develop very itchy skin and hair loss even when they only have a few fleas. While at HSSV, this pet has been treated with monthly flea prevention, such as Advantage or Frontline. The new adopters are advised to keep up with monthly flea prevention in order to control this possible flea allergy. If monthly flea control alone is not controlling the skin condition, the adopting family is advised to consult their family veterinarian for further treatment options.Frank had a dental cleaning recently at HSSV. At that time the patient was anesthetized and all the teeth were cleaned with an ultrasonic scaler to remove tartar and plaque. The teeth were then polished to prevent premature tartar build-up. Personality: Happy Gilmore is named for his super social and wiggly, excitable demeanor. He loves meeting new people but is still learning to not go overboard with his excitement (my human friend give me treats when I greet them like a gentleman and keep my paws on the floor). He is often so wiggly that he hurt his tail from wagging it too hard! Happy is looking for a family that is active and would love to take him on long walks and runs regularly. He would also benefit from a family that can guide him in his manners and learn to be calm. Happy is very food and tennis ball motivated so he aims to please! Happy loves to play fetch and it's a great way to tire him out. In his down time he LOVES to cuddle up with his friends. History: He came to us from the central valley. Dog/Cat Skills: Happy participates in playgroup daily. He often explores the yard and engages in chase play. He has shown a discomfort with more rowdy, physical, or forward behavior, especially from male dogs, and may correct or target them. He has shown to do best with relaxed, social females. He can also become overly excited with vocal play. Happy is best with social, calm, tolerant dogs who can greet and play politely. Happy has shown hyper focus and willingness to chase cats. Leash Skills: Happy pulls while walking on a leash and would benefit from the use of a front clipping harness. He has shown some barrier and leash frustration with dogs displaying tense behavior, and does not always meet dogs comfortably on leash. We are working on this by redirecting him with treats or toys. Medical: Happy arrived at HSSV with trauma to the tip of his tail. Due to his habit of wagging his tail vigorously and hitting the walls with the tip of his tail, he repeatedly traumatized the tip of the tail until it became devitalized. He had also caused painful sores along the sides on the last 3rd of his tail from wagging it against walls. To treat his wounds and relieve his pain, it was necessary to amputate a portion of his tail. He is recovering and healing from the surgery very well. Happy is also healing from ear infections that are currently being treated. Ready to meet Happy Gilmore ?
