Personality: Badger is a lovely boy who has done well with other dogs and loves meeting new people. Badger was doing really well with house training in his foster home. She would use an exercise pen for when he was not being monitored which helped. He is fine spending time alone and amusing himself, but he does well with good exercise beforehand. He loves adults and children. His foster said that he knows "go to your room" as a crate command and that he waits nicely for his treat once going in. We have been working on "off" as he likes to put his paws up on people but he is excited and he has not fully mastered it yet.History: Badger came to us from another shelter then spent some time in a foster home with two small dogs.Dog/Cat skills: Badger can be uncomfortable meeting new dogs initially. He does best with calm, polite dogs that can help him adjust at his own pace. He has been a great buddy for my two small dogs and was reactive only when there was a fence between him and a neighbor dog. He has not been around cats.Medical: This dog has some changes in the enamel layer of his teeth. Enamel is the hard white coating of teeth that makes them strong and healthy. He may have poor enamel quality due to a congenital condition (he was born with this tendency) or due to exposure to a medication or a virus when he was very young. The poor enamel will make him more prone to dental disease. He had 2 incisors (front teeth) removed due to crown fractures.Brushing the teeth daily with a soft toothbrush and toothpaste designed for pets will significantly improve this dog's dental health and possibly his general health in the future. However, he is likely to require veterinary dental care throughout his lifetime. The adopting family is encouraged to discuss continuing dental care for this patient with their family veterinarian or a veterinary dentist.Ready to meet Badger? Personality: Bean is a sweet cat looking for a quiet place she can call home. She is a tripod who gets around just fine on three legs. She can be a little shy at first but after a few pets, she opens up and will approach for more petting. She would love a quiet home where she can snuggle up on the couch and spend time with the people she loves best.History: Bean was adopted as a kitten and surrendered back to HSSV as an adult. Dog/Cat Skills: Bean lived in a home with dogs and multiple cats. The owners noted that there was often conflict between the animals and they observed extensive bullying behavior towards Bean, especially around the litter box. The owner then noted a history of inappropriate urination (urinating outside the litter box). This occurred several times over the years likely due to the bullying she was experiencing. Bean has shown to use her litter box in our care as it is scooped daily and kept clean. Bean is also housed in a quiet space by herself and was provided at least 2 weeks to settle into her space. Medical: Bean arrived at HSSV in 2018 with a deformed left hind leg. To treat and prevent wounds, it was necessary to amputate this limb. She is fully recovered from her surgery. She is expected to be pain-free and no further treatment for these wounds is anticipated. Three-legged cats have an excellent quality of life. They can be extremely active and she is expected to have a normal life-span for a cat. It is recommended that she be kept indoors for her own safety due to her minor physical limitations.Ready to meet me ? Personality: Brody is a sweet, timid dog that can be nervous around new people and places. He may try to move away at first. He warm ups with time and a quiet slow approach. Brody can be sensitive to invasive handling and needs to be comfortable before allowing to be picked up. His future family should be familiar with dog body language and reading his signals to help him slowly build confidence. He prefers to be able to come up to new people at their own pace, especially when yummy treats are involved. With some time, he will eagerly greet people with a tail wag and wiggles. Once he is comfortable, he will follow close by. He would do best in an adult household with experience helping shy dogs gain confidence.History: They came to us from central valley. Dog/Cat Skills: Brody can be initially tentative but will politely greet other dogs. Personality: Chloe is a lovely girl who is shy in new places or when meeting new people but once she's comfortable she loves to snuggle and be brushed. She would do best in a quiet home where she can settle in slowly. History: Chloe was adopted from us previously but recently came back due to a change in her owner's living situation. Cat/Dog Skills: Chloe lived with two cats previously and did well. Medical: Chloe had a dental cleaning recently at HSSV. At that time the patient was anesthetized and all the teeth were cleaned with an ultrasonic scaler to remove tartar and plaque. The teeth were then polished to prevent premature tartar build-up. The teeth were evaluated for fractures and periodontal disease. Teeth that were determined to be unhealthy were removed. Dental care is an on-going process that will need to be addressed for the life of this patient. The adopting family is encouraged to discuss continuing dental care for this patient with their family veterinarian or a veterinary dentist.Ready to meet me ? Comet is a fun, energetic, playful & goofy boy. He likes the outdoors and enjoys going on long walks and runs. He would benefit from daily physical and mental exercise. He would do well with a family that can take him out on runs and hikes. He also loves going to the beach and playing in the sand. As energetic as he is, Comet also loves to curl up and relax with you. He is very intelligent and easy to train. He picks up commands quickly and is already good with the basics.What did you implement for house training? Do you think it's working? Comet is potty trained - he has never had an accident at home. He usually whines and points to the door when he needs to relieve himself.Have you introduced them to a crate? If so, what kind of crate and what was their reaction? Comet was introduced to X-pen. He is ok staying inside for a while if he has his bed and chew toys to keep him occupied.How many hours did you leave them home alone? What was their behavior like when left alone? He has not been left alone for more than an hour. In this duration, he did well. He stayed in his X-pen and took a nap.What is their behavior like with other animals? Comet loves greeting every dog he sees. He is calm with smaller or medium-sized dogs but needs some training when greeting bigger male dogs. He tends to be very forward and can be bossy around less tolerant or tentative dogs. He has shown to do best with females and social, tolerant playful dogs., and can tolerate his vocal play style.What is their behavior like with new people and/or children? : Comet loves meeting new people, he greets them politely at first and then asks for hugs. He is currently learning how to greet people.Is there anything else that you would like the new adopter to know about this dog, such as any special tricks or adorable traits? Comet is very perceptive - he senses your emotions and gives you a hug to cheer you up. He also tells you when he needs belly rubs and enjoys giving hi-fives. Personality: Cranberry is your typical husky with a ton of energy and then some! She is fun-loving and pretty much ready for anything. She can be talkative, just like any husky, and is a great running partner (if you're into that kind of thing). While Cranberry does enjoy a good petting session (and will need several brushing sessions) she is a dog on the go and will thrive on lots of mental and physical exertion. History: Cranberry came to us from the central valley. Dog Skills: Cranberry has no history with cats. She participates in dog playgroups and does best with confident, playful dogs. She does have a tendency to be bossy with less confident dogs and likes to solicit play by pawing and pouncing on dogs backs.Cat Skills: While at HSSV Cranberry has shown hyper-focus and vocalization towards feral cats behind the fence while in a dog park.Leash Skills: Cranberry walks nicely on leash with a front clip harness. Personality: Dominic is an absolute sweetheart who prioritizes snuggles over all else! He is a gentle, loving pup, who just wants to be close to his humans as much as possible. He is potty trained, very good on walks, and loves people. He absolutely loves food and is very treat motivated. He can't wait to find a family that he can cuddle up with every day!History: Dominic has been living in a foster home with another dog (80lb pittie). Dominic and our dog have gotten along really well together! We don't have any kids and just have two adults in the home, so we aren't sure how he does around kids. He will need a little training to learn not to jump up on people when they come home because he is so excited to see them. Dominic is fully convinced that he is a lap dog and loves to climb into people's laps whenever they sit on the couch. :)Dog/ Cat Skills: Dominic did very well meeting our dog. He hasn't shown much interest in playing with our dog (which suits us because our dog doesn't play much either), but he definitely takes cues from our dog, especially on walks. He hasn't shown much interest in other dogs on walks. He can get a little nervous when he hears dogs barking at him, but he has been getting less nervous every day. We haven't had him around any small animals or cats.Leash Skills: Dominic does great on walks! We haven't gone for too many walks because he was recovering some injuries while in foster care, but he walks well on a leash and hasn't pulled so far. We have only walked him with our dog there, so he might be more nervous/timid walking by himself at first, but he has been getting more confident every day.Medical: Dominic may have a flea allergy, which means that the pet is allergic to flea bites. Pets with this condition can develop very itchy skin and hair loss even when they only have a few fleas. While at HSSV, this pet has been treated with monthly flea prevention, such as Advantage or Frontline. The new adopters are advised to keep up with monthly flea prevention in order to control this possible flea allergy. Domonic has mild hip dysplasia in both hips. Hip dysplasia is a condition in which the "ball and socket" joint of the hip does not fit well. Currently, he shows mild changes in his gait (the way he walks) but does not appear lame or reluctant to exercise. He has no evidence of arthritis on his x-rays and no treatment is recommended. Dominic arrived at HSSV on 12/1/20 with deep wounds to his front legs, especially the left front limb. He was treated with antibiotics, pain medications, and wound care for several weeks. His soft tissue wounds have resolved completely. We anticipate that the trauma to the bones of the front limbs will continue to resolve and that he will return to normal activity over time.
