Ava is a beautiful, sweet, playful, and gentle two-year-old brown tabby cat with golden/green eyes looking for a loving guardian. Ava came to Friends of Petraits Rescue when she was pregnant, stray, covered with fleas and full of worms. She gave birth to four amazingly healthy kittens who have since found fantastic homes. She even lovingly accepted and nursed a bonus kitten whose mom couldn’t care for him. This girl has finally learned to appreciate some me time. She plays, snuggles and loves to be brushed. She is living in a foster home where she tolerates two small dogs and another cat. We think she’d be just fine as the only pet or with one gentle-natured feline. And, probably best with gentle teens and adults who don’t mind waiting for her personality to unfold. She is now extremely healthy, spayed, de-wormed, de-flead, vaccinated for distemper and rabies, virus-tested negative and micro-chipped. Bean is a adorable six-month-old, tan and chocolate-colored male guinea pig looking for a loving guardian. Bean came to Friends of Petraits Rescue as an only guinea pig, but he may enjoy the companionship of another guinea pig. He enjoys communicating with the other guinea pigs at the rescue through the bars of his habitat. Guinea pigs eat a diet of unlimited Timothy and Orchard hays; a handful of guinea pig pellets, and fresh vegetables including romaine, red leaf and green leaf lettuces, cilantro, cucumbers, carrots, tomatoes, etc. Guinea pigs, just like humans, can’t manufacture their own vitamin C, so they need to supplement with red pepper and many other vitamin C-rich foods. He enjoys his fresh foods and looks forward to his daily salads. Bullwinkle is a bouncy, energetic, muscular, and playful, nine-year-old, 65-pound, brindle and white, male Am Staff Terrier looking for a loving guardian. Someone cropped Bullwinkle’s ears to make him look tough, but he is a happy-go-lucky guy who loves to have his belly rubbed. He is a strong and solid dog who loves to play ball. He is full of tail wags for everyone he meets. He knows the commands sit and down. He rides well in the car; he just curls up in the passenger seat. He’s great on leashed walks as well. Momma Cara came to Friends of Petraits Rescue when her babies were only two days old. They have been lovingly raised in a foster home where they were handled from the moment they arrived. Cara is as sweet a guinea pig as I’ve ever met. Her babies are wiggly as babies always are. They will need daily handling to continue their progress in sociability. Daisy is a sweet, beautiful, loyal and misunderstood, eight-year-old, 90-pound, female, fawn South African Boerboel Mastiff with a long tail looking for a dog-loving guardian. Daisy was found stray in Chicago’s Avondale neighborhood in August of 2017 and was taken in by the Famous Fido shelter where she has been for over three years. She looks like she had been bred in the past, but she is now spayed. She is nervous around new people and accepts women quicker than men. If someone would give her a chance, they will find an incredibly loyal companion. But this will take time and patience. She doesn’t respond to commands, but she takes treats gently and appreciatively from your fingers. We think she’d do best as the one and only dog in the home, or possibly with a large male with an experienced handler. She is healthy, spayed, vaccinated, heartworm-tested and microchipped. Kong is an adorable one-year-old, male white albino Syrian hamster looking for a loving guardian. Kong is handleable and active. He loves running on his wheel and he’s fun to watch play, explore and feed treats. The main diet of hamsters is pellets, supplemented with tiny amounts of fresh foods like broccoli, whole unsalted peanuts in the shell, tofu and tiny bites of carrots to name a few. Kong was dropped off at Chicago Animal Care and Control when he bit a child, and his family was afraid to handle him. There’s really nothing aggressive about him, but it’s always best to be cautious when handling hamsters and make sure you don’t wake them up out of a sound sleep. Even the sweetest hamster can bite if startled by quick movements in their cage. He’s not as willing to accept strangers yet at first meeting. It took a couple months for him to warm up to his foster mom, but now he needs to find his patient permanent family – possibly as the one and only pet in the home. Found outside, this handsome young fellow has been fully vetted, and brought inside for socialization and love. He’s done absolutely beautifully! He’s perfect with his litter box and keeps his foster mom company as she works on her computer. Mitzi is an Abyssinian with swirls and rosettes in her fur; Marbles is a smooth coat. Purchased at a pet store, their family gave them up to Friends of Petraits when dad lost his job. The four girls in the family ranged from four to 18 years old, so they are accustomed to being handled and loved on. They let you trim their nails and they love to romp in their hay and munch. She enjoys her greens, makes adorable squeals, chirps, squeaks and purring noises - especially if you show up with her favorite foods. She will sit on your lap, and she lets you hold her. Sage and Smudge are adult female Californian rabbits looking for loving guardians along with their five seven-week-old babies that they raised together. The rabbits were relinquished to Friends of Petraits Rescue due to a family’s inability to care for them. These rabbits eat a healthy diet of mostly timothy and orchard hays, a small amount of pellets, plenty of fresh greens ... romaine, carrots with tops, cilantro, and bites of apples, etc as treats. They love chewing on toys made from edible hays and wood; they shred them, roll them, and throw them around. They also enjoy batting around balls. Watching an entire family of rabbits together is amazing. The father of the rabbits is a black rabbit that had been given away before I met him. They would be best adopted in pairs or to a home with another rabbit because they are very social and bonded. They also love attention from their humans. I keep the rabbits in two attached 30” high exercise pens with fun toys, water bowl, and multiple large litter boxes for hopping in. They love to explore the home, but I keep an eye on them as rabbits can chew cords and woodwork. They could easily be happy house rabbits if you rabbit-proof. They are learning to use their litter boxes quite well. The adult females will be spayed in December. The babies will be neutered and spayed in January. Tootsie is a fun, sweet and lovable seven-year-old, 56-pound, tan and white female terrier-mix looking for a loving guardian. Tootsie rolls over for belly rubs and has a delightful personality. Her tail is always happily wagging. Tootsie knows the command “sit” and takes treats gently from your fingers. She is currently being kenneled in Union, Illinois, where she is great with all the other dogs, but not cats! Tootsie is also wonderful with people of all ages. She is very sweet, snugly and loving. She prefers cuddling to playing ball and doesn’t seem to have an interest in playing fetch. Tootsie was found stray in Schaumburg, Illinois, and her teeth are all ground down. Perhaps she was chewing on a chain or rocks? So she recently had all the nubs removed so she only has a couple of teeth left. I first photographed Tootsie in June of 2017 and she has been kenneled ever since. She is crate-trained and appears to be housebroken. Isn’t it time she found the home of her dreams?
