Catahoulas were originally bred to hunt hogs & herd cattle, but Nelson knows his most important job is to love & protect his best friend, & he sure is great at doing both. This 65 pound cuddle champ has a surprisingly laid back attitude, especially for being such a young adult. Most of the time he is perfectly content lounging around the house with his person, preferably in their lap, of course. But Cathoulas are very intelligent, athletic & sometimes complicated dogs so it would be important for Nelson's family to plan physically & mentally stimulating activities for him regularly. Playing games & practicing commands are great ways to bond with pets & we want to set Nelson & his new family up for success. His adoption will come with a few free training sessions & as always the first week of our adoptions is considered a trial period. I think it is important that you have time to get to know the pet in your home & make sure they are the right fit. Nelson is the poster dog for the term "Man's Best Friend" but he becomes so bonded to his buddy that he suffers from separation anxiety & has even caused himself harm when he attempted to climb over a metal fence to go find his foster mom. If it was up to Nelson he would be by his best friend's side 24/7 & if that is what you are looking for Nelson is definitely your guy. But, if his new family is willing to work with our trainer we think we can help Nelson overcome his separation anxiety or at least manage it.He is great with kids & people in general but will protect his family from adult strangers if needed. We have also seen him enjoy playing with other dogs but on occasion his prey drive can kick in especially with smaller animals. Nelson has a lot of love to give & would rather not share his people with any other pets but under the right circumstances he would consider having a four legged friend. Nelson is one of the most loyal & loving dogs that I have ever met.Angie, Alamo Heights Animal Care Services 210-777-1382 show less
