About BILLY

BILLY is a smaller, Young Coconut Hound being fostered  in Toronto, ON (formerly fostered at Coconut Hound Haven Sanctuary in Luperon in the Dominican Republic). His short-to-medium haired coat is a very SHINY Brown, Tan and Beige with a fabulous Puffy Fanned Tail!

BILLY was found in Luperon, and we were told that he had had an owner, but there was a divorce and he was dumped in the street. As a result, he ended up being run over in the street by a passing vehichle. Kim and Sharon cared for him at CHH and treated him with medication to control swelling. In a few of his intake pictures, you can see just how dejected and underweight he was. We lucked in with him having no permanent damage to his legs.

BILLY gets along very well with other dogs of all sizes. As you can see in his video, he walks perfectly on leash - with no pulling - in fact he is a perfect "heeler" and walks besides another of our foster girls - CENIZA wonderfully.

BILLY is approximately 2.5 years old (we have given him the honorary birthday of Feb.22/20) and weighs approximately 30 pounds. BILLY is up-to-date on vaccinations and neutered. He is microchipped and registered.

Billy is available for adoption in Canada. If you are looking for a forever friend - I might just be the right pup for you? CLICK on my link to put in your adoption request.

If you choose to apply to adopt a Coconut Hound, please understand that because of the volume of animals we care for our application approval process takes approximately one week. Please ensure your three (3) email referrals know you are applying as well as your landlord (if applicable) to avoid delays (and to have those references check their Junk mail/SPAM folders). We do appreciate how hard it is to wait and how exciting the process is for you. Our volunteers are very busy caring for a high volume of animals and do not get a lot of chances to take photos and be at computers for updates. Thank you for understanding and for your continued support of DCDR!

Hola! I'm ALFREDO!  I am a big boy Coconut Hound who loves other dogs, but I really am not a fan of cats. I have GREAT NEWS!!!! I have just arrived on the September charter from the Dominican Republic to Canada, where I am being fostered in Kingston, ON (formerly home-fostered in the Dominican Republic).  URGENT MEMO***I AM AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION.  My short-haired coat is Brown with White. ALFREDO is an abandoned dog who wandered the beaches and streets of Las Terrenas asking for food and caresses. He has always been a dog appreciated by the people who met him for his good character, he was fed a little by everyone but for his good character he was continually attacked by other stray dogs with a much stronger character and did not defend himself. One day I saw him very injured and took him home, then immediately to the vet. He is a dog that has adapted to the house after a couple of days, at first he was a bit wary but then he realized that he had nothing to fear. He has certainly suffered from hunger, like many abandoned dogs, since when he eats he does not allow anyone to come near, otherwise he is a good dog, very playful, has a high sense of protection and is a good guard dog. He gets along well with the other dogs of the house while due to his exuberant character he cannot socialize with the cats I have in the house. My cats are used to other dogs with a calmer character, and for this reason my cats they are frightened. For the moment I do not recommend the presence of cats for possible adoption. The presence of another dog is preferable as Alfredo is active and loves to play with other dogs, he always wants to play with another canine or the family that adopts him must consider dedicating time to play and / or walks. He is not an apartment dog and will not do well in an apartment. He does not dirty inside the house, he needs a large and safe enclosed garden with high protection to run and play. I do not recommend adoption for families with very young children, he is a massive dog with a lot of strength, better for a family of adults. Alfredo has no problems with food, he eats quality croquettes and foods that I cook like rice, pasta with chicken, sardines, liver, tuna, hard-boiled eggs, carrots, courgettes, etc..., always all natural without condiments. Alfredo is used to being inside the house and in the garden. At night he sleeps inside the house, during the day he is free to go to the garden whenever he wants. He doesn't like to go on a leash much but that's okay, he is learning to walk better on one. He will bark if he hears noises he doesn't recognize. He likes to chew the cowhide bones or the cow bones that I buy in the butcher's, cooked.  Alfredo is almost 3 years old (we have given him the honorary birthday of November 1st, 2019) and weighs approximately 48 pounds. Alfredo is up-to-date on vaccinations, neutered and ready to find his forever home. He is microchipped and registered. Alfredo is available for adoption in Canada. If you are looking for a forever friend - I might just be the right pup for you? CLICK on my link to put in your adoption request. HI THERE - I am BINGO and I have GREAT NEWS!!!  I am being fostered In Hamilton, ON (formerly fostered at Coconut Hound Have Las Terrenas in DR).  Oh silly me,  I forgot to mention the most important part,  I AM AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION.  My short-haired coat is Creamy Blonde with a Grey/Black snout. BINGO'S foster mom says he has been the cuddliest (temporary) addition to their family. He is such a silly boy with so much love to give. Bingo has come a long way since arrivimng in Canada, he has settled into his routine really well. He has no issues taking his medication(with food), loves his kong and stuffed toys, knows his basic commands but will need further training to perfect his manners, and does very well on walks. He plays well with his foster brother (German Sheperd) but he does prefer dogs closer to his size/smaller for play. Bingo would do best in a home without young children as he does get startled unexpected noises/movements. If you are looking for a dog that will snuggle up with you on the couch and give you endless kissess and cuddles. then Bingo is the dog for you !!!  BINGO and his two siblings were rescued when a friend of the Haven alerted us to a trio of very little puppies that had been abandoned on the beach and were living in a trash pile. We were able to find them and discovered they were not only skinny, covered in fleas and in poor health, but one of them (now named BINGO) had a nasty injury on his shoulder. We brought them home to the haven to help them heal and recover. Sadly the one little sister passed away. BINGO, the brother with a shoulder injury, is now fully healed and getting bigger every day just like his surviving brother (Bongo).  BINGO is just over 1 years old, given the honorary birthday of May 13, 2021, and weighs approximately 28 pounds. BINGO is up-to-date on vaccinations, neutered and ready to find his forever home. He is microchipped and registered. BINGO is available for adoption in Canada. If you are looking for a forever friend - I might just be the right pup for you! HI, I am BLANCO, now that I am in Canada people call me WHITE. I am being fostered in TORONTO where I enjoy spending time with all my housemates. I have 1 very BIG Coconut Hound brother and 2 lovely doggy sisters all from the DR (another also up for adoption).  We share the house with 2 Coconut cats and a 10 year old girl. My short-haired coat is WHITE but I have the most adorable TAN patch over half of my left face and eye and then the cutest FAWN speckling on both my ears! WHITE'S foster says that he is great waliking on the leash, he gets along with kids, cats and dogs. He is working on his housetraining and it is coming along nicely. White gets cold in this weather because he is so used to the hot warm Caribbean weather, so he loves to be covered with a blanket. WHITE's foster family writes; "I love the daily walks and play time with all my house mates. I am very good at interacting and playing with other dogs in the off leash parks. I am kind, gentle, easy going, happy-go-lucky and adapt fast. I have absolutely no issues sharing food, beds and human attention. My foster family love me and say that I am a sweetheart and my happiness is contagious! WHITE is very athletic (loves his zoomies) and can jump very high but he is definitely not an escape risk. Although high energy, he also loves his quiet and cuddle time with his humans. WHITE even lets "his little girl" play dress up with him!" WHITE was found by a volunteer in the community. His rescuer writes; "He was hit by a car and sustained an injury on his back a small scar is visible just above his tail but he has absolutely no pain). When he was at the vet, they found he also had a tumour - which he received treatment for and has fully healed from. These sticker tumours arise in unneutered/unspayed animals and are transmitted sexually.. When WHITE first arrived at the shelter he was very shy and scared but now to many I am known as "A Ray of Sunshine", especially because I have a big smile on my face and I like to do my little "HAPPY DANCE" when visitors came to the Sanctuary." WHITE is approximately 4.5 years old (we have given him the honorary birthday of January 1st, 2018) and he weighs approximately 38 pounds. WHITE is up-to-date on vaccinations, neutered and ready to find his forever home. He is microchipped and registered. BOOBOO is a Young Coconut Hound being fostered in NOVA SCOTIA (previously at Coconut Hound Haven Sanctuary in Luperon in the Dominican Republic. Her short-haired coat is CREAM. BOOBOO was found running at large all alone and recently abandoned in the small town of Luperón aged 9 weeks old. She weighed a grand total of 4 pounds! She was covered in fleas and ticks and very ill. The ticks had caused anemia (Ehrlichia) and we needed to treat her with antibiotics. We also want to mention that BOOBOO has some teeth staining from being on antibiotics (doxycycline) that saved her life as a younger puppy. In no way has this spoiled the integrity of her teeth and gums and she is very healthy! BOOBOO made a fast and full recovery. She is a scamp and very playful - you might say a scaliwag! She loves to hang out with the other pups in her pen (see her video) but also loves time with our volunteers when she gets a bath and her nails done. BOOBOO has also been cat-tested by our resident feline specialists Snow and Molly. She has learned to walk on leash (as you will see in the attached video). BOOBOO is just over 1 years old (we have given her the honorary birthday of April, 27, 2021) and weighs approximately 52 pounds. While 52 pounds may seem heavy - she is all muscle so in fact she is actually not that large. BOOBOO is up-to-date on vaccinations and spayed. She is microchipped and registered. BRITTNEY is a young Coconut Hound being fostered in TORONTO, ON (formerly fostered at Coconut Hound Haven Sanctuary in Luperon in the Dominican Republic). Her short-haired coat is an amazingly, SHINY DARK BROWN (but shows as Black in pictures) with a lovely WHITE STRIPE on her chest and of course TRADEMARK COCONUT HOUND EARS that go UP & DOWN. BRITTNEY'S foster mom say that she gets along great with kids, cats and dogs. She is great walking on a leash, she is still working on her house training but it is coming along. She says Brittney can be a bit jealous and possessive but nothing horrible, she just loves her foster mom. BRITTNEY was found recently abandoned in a small village near Puerto Plata around 9 weeks old by one of our amazing vet tech volunteers - Rianna Daley. She was covered in fleas and ticks and very ill. We quickly got to work pulling the ticks off one-by-one (you might remember see a full bowl in her intake pictures we took in July, 2021) and a medicated bath. Her fur was in rough shape but so was her body. The ticks had caused anemia (Ehrlichia) and we needed to treat her with the antibiotic Doxycycline and other medications for over a month. We are pleased to say that BRITTNEY made a full recovery from her illness but we also want to mention that BRITTNEY has teeth staining from being on the antibiotics that saved her life as a young puppy. BRITTNEY is a bit shy and needs quiet introductions to new people but interracts well with any dogs (she has off-leash dog park experience) or cats she meets since arriving in Canada. BRITTNEY lives with an 11 year old little girl who she loves to "dance with" when picked up by her front legs! She loves her ZOOMIES and then settles down for a quiet sleep at the foot of her foster Mum.She is a quiet but playful young girl with the other pups in her pen but also loves time with our volunteers when she gets a bath and her nails done - as you will see she loves to hang out in laps! BRITTNEY has also been cat-tested by our resident feline specialists Snow and Molly. BRITTNEY walks well on leash. She is absolutely sweet and affectionate. BRITTNEY is just over 1 year old (we have given her the honorary birthday of May 10, 2021) and weighs approximately 43 pounds. BRITTNEY is up-to-date on vaccinations and spayed. CONSTANT SMILER BRUNELL is a young Coconut Hound being fostered in Canada (formerly fostered at Coconut Hound Haven Sanctuary in Luperon in the Dominican Republic). His short-haired coat is Dark Chocolate Brown, with a Chestnut under coat with striking White markings on his face, chest and legs. Many of our supporters will remember BRUNELL!  BRUNELL is a dog that was happily living on the boardwalk (Malecón) in Puerto Plata. He and a number of his pals are watched over by some expats. They alerted us to him limping and that he had been injured.  An X-ray revealed a broken leg for this friendly, wonderful dog.  However, a blood test also revealed that he had ehrlichiosis, a tick disease that causes anemia and so no surgery could be done until that was treated. A month of antibiotics and BRUNELL had overcome the ehrlichiosis.  With the help of funding from our donors BRUNELL was able to have his surgery in mid-January. Kim Watson agreed to have BRUNELL recuperate at CHH until the pins could be removed. BRUNELL has made a full recovery and could not wait to start mingling with the rest of our pups in the pens. In some pictures you will see him with his friend Taffy (also available for adoption) romping around in a smaller pen together. BRUNELL has quickly become a fast favourite of our volunteers as well for his loving nature and desire to hang out with people.  BRUNELL is 2 years old (we have given him the honorary birthday of July 20, 2020) and weighs approximately 40 pounds. His short-haired coat is Black and Tan with a lovely White chest.... and of course TRADEMARK COCONUT HOUND EARS that go UP and DOWN! BRUNO was found locally by Michaela Meyer early August, 2021 as a very young puppy weighing only 7 pounds and under 3 months old. We put him into our isolation building as we do all our animals when we intake them and it is lucky we did as we quickly noticed that he was ill. BRUNO was treated with life-saving antibiotics.  We want to mention that BRUNO has some teeth staining from being on those antibiotics (doxycycline) as a younger puppy that in no way affects the integrity of HIS teeth. BRUNO is an absolutely delight. He loves his penmates and his humans equally. In a few photos you will see him getting cuddles after his bath, nail trims and ear cleaning - which he loves. He has also been tested by one of our CHH cat residents - Miss Molly - and passed with flying colours. BRUNO is extremely well-socialized and just a lovely fellow to have around. He loves his time with our walking volunteers and leash training. BRUNO is also house-trained. BRUNO is just over 1 years old (we have given him the honorary birthday of May 15, 2021) and weighs approximately 48 pounds. BUFFY is a Young Coconut Hound being fostered in KINGSTON, ONTARIO!  BUFFY was previously fostered by Kim at Coconut Hound Haven Sanctuary in Luperon in the Dominican Republic. Her short-haired coat is GOLDEN BROWN and she has the cutest UNDERBITE! BUFFY and her sister Sussex (now adopted) were found at 8 weeks of age with 2 sibings - Rhode and Brahma - and Kim named them after various species of chickens. They had been dropped on the porch of a neighbour. Unfortunately the litter was in poor shape with Parvo when we rescued them. We immediately began antibiotics and IV fluids to try to save them. Sadly we lost Brahma and Rhode within days of their arrival. BUFFY is now a happy and energetic young pup who enjoys spending time with other dogs, cats and humans but as you will see in her videos, she is a beautiful pup who readily allows our volunteers to bathe her, trim her nails, clean her ears and sits so patiently and calmly on their laps for snuggle time. BUFFY is also learning to walk on leash! For privacy, we have cut out the faces of children she is cuddling with currently but we think it is safe to say she is YOUNG CHILD FRIENDLY! BUFFY is just over 1 years old (we have given her the honorary birthday of June 26, 2021) and she weighs approximately 42 pounds - she is smaller than many Canadian dogs of that weight as she has excellent muscle tone. BUFFY is fully up-to-date on all vaccinations and is spayed. She is already microchipped and registered. BUFFY is available for adoption in Canada. CLICK on my link to put in your adoption request. Chocolate was hit by a car one evening and a bystander called us right away and helped us get chocolate to the vet asap. Chocolate suffered a fracture in his front left leg which healed in a different position than normally. We were going to return him to the person that called us but they never answered their phone, and never reached out to see how he was doing. We looked everywhere for them but never found them.  Chocolate is such a happy pup, especially when it is dinner time. He is a bit shy around people but once you get down to his level he is so happy and laps up the attention. He looks at you as he is so grateful for every waking moment of the day and loves to snuggle and play with his friends. Even though chocolate had a fracture in his leg it has never affected him once it healed and he is in no pain whatsoever.  Chocolate is quite athletic, and can jump very high! He is a very calm and medium energy dog, but when he gets his zoomies look out! Chocolate is good with all dogs, and kids! Chocolate is approximately 2 years old (we have given him the honorary birthday of January 1st, 2020) and weighs approximately 37 pounds. Chocolate is up-to-date on vaccinations, neutered and is microchipped and registered. Chocolate is available for adoption in Canada. CUTIE PATOOTIE 'CILLA (aka PRICILLA) is a young Coconut Hound being fostered near KINGSTON, Ontario (formerly at Coconut Hound Haven Sanctuary in Luperon in the Dominican Republic. Her short-haired coat is Tan with White and Dark markings on her cute as a button nose. She even has a natural White collar around her neck and White stockings! Her rescuer and foster mother Kim writes; "'CILLA was found on the streets of Puerto Plata in April, 2021 fending for herself at just 8-10 weeks of age. I was driving to an urgent vet visit but as soon as I saw her, I knew I just had to stop for this little girl who was all alone". 'CILLA is an absolute delight! She loves to play with her puppy pen-mates. She hunts down her caregivers for love and has a constantly wagging tail (as you will see in her videos). She definitely considers herself a lap dog!!   'CILLA is leashed trained now (the video we show is her very first time ever on a leash - PLUS she was meeting resident CAT TESTER Mr. Snowball - and she passed all tests with flying colours! CILLA is a definite favourite with the volunteers at the CHH Sanctuary! 'CILLA is approximately 1.5 years old (we have given her the honorary birthday of January 18, 2021) and weighs approximately 42 pounds and is now full-grown. CILLA is up-to-date on vaccinations, spayed and ready to find her forever home. She is microchipped and registered. 'CILLA is available for adoption in Canada.  If you are looking for a forever friend - I might just be the right pup for you! DIXIE is a young Coconut Hound being fostered in NEWMARKET, ON (formerly fostered at Coconut Hound Haven Sanctuary in Luperon in the Dominican Republic). Her short-haired coat is a Fawn Brown and she has a cute White front sock on her left leg! Hi I am DIXIE!!! My foster mom says ...I'm a little shy at first, but you just need to get to know me! I am good with children, other dogs, and well cats I've learned to live with them!! I love going for walks and I especially love to run. She says that I would make someone a great jogging partner, since I love to run so much!!! DIXIE and her two sisters Pixie (also available for adoption) and Bixie (now adopted and living in Canada) came into our care at the end of August, 2021. We have a store in Cabarete where people can purchase pet supplies for their own animals and also great DCDR swag. The store is on the 2nd floor of a building. One morning one of our volunteers arrived for their shift and discovered these 3 tiny 10 week old puppies weighing between 4 and 5 pounds each on the bottom doorstep in a box. She quickly called another volunteer and arrangements were made to bring them to our Sanctuary. AGAIN, their only crime was being born female. We were lucky, they were quite healthy and in good shape but we put them into our isolation building immediately as of course we knew they were unvaccinated. FAST forward months later and look at the beauties they have become. If you see them in person it is easier to tell them apart but they have a lot of similar physical characteristics. What they also share is their loving natures. They adore sitting on our volunteers' laps for a cuddle after having a bath and getting their nails clipped and their ears cleaned. They also love playtime and are indifferent to cats - EVEN WHEN OUR MOLLY wants to share a lap with them! DIXIE is a natural also walking on leash. The video you see is her very first attempt doing so! DIXIE is just over 1 years old (we have given her the honorary birthday of June 10th, 2021) and weighs approximately 51 pounds. DIXIE is up-to-date on vaccinations and spayed. DIXIE is microchipped and registered. DIXIE is available for adoption in Canada. If you are looking for a forever friend - I might just be the right pup for you? CLICK on my link to put in your adoption request. DOTTY is a smaller, young Coconut Hound being Halifax, Nova Scotia (formerly fostered at Coconut Hound Haven Sanctuary in Luperon in the Dominican Republic.) Her medium-to-long-haired coat is CREAM that has hints of orangey-red when she gets wet. .... AND A GREAT FANNED TAIL!... and, of course TRADEMARK COCONUT HOUND EARS that go UP & DOWN!! DOTTY'S foster parent says she loves belly rubs and going for walks! She loves to sniff and is good on leash. She has not shown any reactivity to other dogs on leash. She loves her grub! She likes treats and bones and will even steal the food right off your plate if she can get hold of it. She has been sharing bowls of food with her foster sister and it hasn't been a problem. She is mostly potty trained, however will have an occasional accident in the house. Especially if she is scared, she will pee. She needs a routine when it comes to doing her business. She's starting doing more business on her walks now which is good. She loves to be cozy with a blanket and some toys. She is mostly lazy, as long as she gets a daily walk. She also gets cases of the "zoomies" where she will run around the house happy and playful. She does still have some puppy energy! If she finds a loose sock, youbetter believe she will make it her chew toy. She is very slow warming up to others. Very nervous, and sometimes this comes out as growls, barks, or even lunging at people. She would do best with a home that has time and patience to let her grow accustom to her, where she can gain confidence again and trust. She would do best without small children running around, as this would spook her. She would do best without cats as she is scared of them and will lunge and snap at them. She loves her foster dog sister and loves to give her kisses.  DOTTY was found with 13 other dogs (including her mother Didi and sisters Dolly (now adopted) and Delta). They had been owned dogs and the owner had left the area but paid someone to feed them daily. They were trapped inside a building in the middle of the town of Luperon and never went outside. After several complaints by neighbours to the police of awful smells and barking - the authorities and Kim Watson from DCDR were called in. What they found was horrendous. Sadly the majority of the dogs (10) were already dead. In order to be able to enter the building, the fire department was called in as due to the smell and major health concerns, they needed to remove the corpses of the deceased dog and hose the walls and building floors down in order for Kim and Nando to rescue the remaining surviving 4 dogs (Didi, Delta, Dolly and Dotty). We started vaccinations immediately and we have started her on 30 day dose of the antibiotic Doxycycline as we know she likely has Ehrlichiosis by the amount she bled when we removed the ticks, plus her gums were very white. DOTTY was immediately friendly with our volunteers and loved her first bath so much. She immediately settled in onto a bed we keep in our isolation area and didn't want to leave - she was so happy for human company. She was so happy to get all the dead ticks off. On her arrival, amazingly she immediately took to being on a leash! DOTTY is approximately 1 years old (we have given her the honorary birthday of July 5, 2021) and she weighs approximately 21 pounds (she is very fluffy so looks bigger). DOTTY is up-to-date on vaccinations and spayed. She will be microchipped and registered before flying. DOTTY is available for adoption in Canada and on-Island.
