About BRITTNEY

BRITTNEY is a young Coconut Hound being fostered in TORONTO, ON (formerly fostered at Coconut Hound Haven Sanctuary in Luperon in the Dominican Republic). Her short-haired coat is an amazingly, SHINY DARK BROWN (but shows as Black in pictures) with a lovely WHITE STRIPE on her chest and of course TRADEMARK COCONUT HOUND EARS that go UP & DOWN.

BRITTNEY'S foster mom say that she gets along great with kids, cats and dogs. She is great walking on a leash, she is still working on her house training but it is coming along. She says Brittney can be a bit jealous and possessive but nothing horrible, she just loves her foster mom.

BRITTNEY was found recently abandoned in a small village near Puerto Plata around 9 weeks old by one of our amazing vet tech volunteers - Rianna Daley. She was covered in fleas and ticks and very ill. We quickly got to work pulling the ticks off one-by-one (you might remember see a full bowl in her intake pictures we took in July, 2021) and a medicated bath. Her fur was in rough shape but so was her body. The ticks had caused anemia (Ehrlichia) and we needed to treat her with the antibiotic Doxycycline and other medications for over a month.

We are pleased to say that BRITTNEY made a full recovery from her illness but we also want to mention that BRITTNEY has teeth staining from being on the antibiotics that saved her life as a young puppy. BRITTNEY is a bit shy and needs quiet introductions to new people but interracts well with any dogs (she has off-leash dog park experience) or cats she meets since arriving in Canada. BRITTNEY lives with an 11 year old little girl who she loves to "dance with" when picked up by her front legs! She loves her ZOOMIES and then settles down for a quiet sleep at the foot of her foster Mum.She is a quiet but playful young girl with the other pups in her pen but also loves time with our volunteers when she gets a bath and her nails done - as you will see she loves to hang out in laps! BRITTNEY has also been cat-tested by our resident feline specialists Snow and Molly. BRITTNEY walks well on leash. She is absolutely sweet and affectionate.

BRITTNEY is just over 1 year old (we have given her the honorary birthday of May 10, 2021) and weighs approximately 43 pounds. BRITTNEY is up-to-date on vaccinations and spayed. She is microchipped and registered.

BRITTNEY is available for adoption in Canada. If you are looking for a forever friend - I might just be the right pup for you! CLICK on my link to put in your adoption request.

If you choose to apply to adopt a Coconut Hound, please understand that because of the volume of animals we care for our application approval process takes approximately one week. Please ensure your three (3) email referrals know you are applying as well as your landlord (if applicable) to avoid delays (and to have those references check their Junk mail/SPAM folders). We do appreciate how hard it is to wait and how exciting the process is for you. Our volunteers are very busy caring for a high volume of animals and do not get a lot of chances to take photos and be at computers for updates. Thank you for understanding and for your continued support of DCDR!

HI THERE - I am BINGO and I have GREAT NEWS!!!  I am being fostered In Hamilton, ON (formerly fostered at Coconut Hound Have Las Terrenas in DR).  Oh silly me,  I forgot to mention the most important part,  I AM AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION.  My short-haired coat is Creamy Blonde with a Grey/Black snout. BINGO'S foster mom says he has been the cuddliest (temporary) addition to their family. He is such a silly boy with so much love to give. Bingo has come a long way since arriving in Canada, he has settled into his routine really well. He has no issues taking his medication(with food), loves his kong and stuffed toys, knows his basic commands but will need further training to perfect his manners, and does very well on walks. He plays well with his foster brother (German Sheperd) but he does prefer dogs closer to his size/smaller for play. Bingo would do best in a home without young children as he does get startled unexpected noises/movements. If you are looking for a dog that will snuggle up with you on the couch and give you endless kissess and cuddles. Then Bingo is the dog for you !!!  BINGO and his two siblings were rescued when a friend of the Haven alerted us to a trio of very little puppies that had been abandoned on the beach and were living in a trash pile. We were able to find them and discovered they were not only skinny, covered in fleas and in poor health, but one of them (now named BINGO) had a nasty injury on his shoulder. We brought them home to the haven to help them heal and recover. Sadly the one little sister passed away. BINGO, the brother with a shoulder injury, is now fully healed and getting bigger every day just like his surviving brother (Bongo).  BINGO is just over 1 years old, given the honorary birthday of May 13, 2021, and weighs approximately 28 pounds. BINGO is up-to-date on vaccinations, neutered and ready to find his forever home. He is microchipped and registered. BINGO is available for adoption in Canada. If you are looking for a forever friend - I might just be the right pup for you! BOOBOO is a Young Coconut Hound being fostered in NOVA SCOTIA (previously at Coconut Hound Haven Sanctuary in Luperon in the Dominican Republic. Her short-haired coat is CREAM. BOOBOO was found running at large all alone and recently abandoned in the small town of Luperón aged 9 weeks old. She weighed a grand total of 4 pounds! She was covered in fleas and ticks and very ill. The ticks had caused anemia (Ehrlichia) and we needed to treat her with antibiotics. We also want to mention that BOOBOO has some teeth staining from being on antibiotics (doxycycline) that saved her life as a younger puppy. In no way has this spoiled the integrity of her teeth and gums and she is very healthy! BOOBOO made a fast and full recovery. She is a scamp and very playful - you might say a scaliwag! She loves to hang out with the other pups in her pen (see her video) but also loves time with our volunteers when she gets a bath and her nails done. BOOBOO has also been cat-tested by our resident feline specialists Snow and Molly. She has learned to walk on leash (as you will see in the attached video). BOOBOO is just over 1 years old (we have given her the honorary birthday of April, 27, 2021) and weighs approximately 52 pounds. While 52 pounds may seem heavy - she is all muscle so in fact she is actually not that large. BOOBOO is up-to-date on vaccinations and spayed. She is microchipped and registered. CUTIE PATOOTIE 'CILLA (aka PRICILLA) is a young Coconut Hound being fostered near KINGSTON, Ontario (formerly at Coconut Hound Haven Sanctuary in Luperon in the Dominican Republic. Her short-haired coat is Tan with White and Dark markings on her cute as a button nose. She even has a natural White collar around her neck and White stockings! Pricilla (Cilla) is shy at first but once she gives you a good sniff, she loves to snuggle up for a good ‘Netflix and chill’ session. She’s a beautiful girl that walks very well on a leash and is learning basic commands. She would thrive in a home that would help her to come out of her shell and develop a routine with boundaries focused on enforcing her confidence. Toys are a new thing for her, and she has yet to really learn to play with them, but she does enjoy carrying them around from room to room with her. Pricilla can be a bit 'dog reactive' as she can be not overly friendly with some other dogs.  Her rescuer and foster mother Kim writes; "'CILLA was found on the streets of Puerto Plata in April, 2021 fending for herself at just 8-10 weeks of age. I was driving to an urgent vet visit but as soon as I saw her, I knew I just had to stop for this little girl who was all alone". 'CILLA is an absolute delight! She loves to play with her puppy pen-mates. She hunts down her caregivers for love and has a constantly wagging tail (as you will see in her videos). She definitely considers herself a lap dog!!   'CILLA is leashed trained now (the video we show is her very first time ever on a leash - PLUS she was meeting resident CAT TESTER Mr. Snowball - and she passed all tests with flying colours! CILLA is a definite favourite with the volunteers at the CHH Sanctuary! 'CILLA is approximately 1.5 years old (we have given her the honorary birthday of January 18, 2021) and weighs approximately 42 pounds and is now full-grown. CILLA is up-to-date on vaccinations, spayed and ready to find her forever home. DIXIE is a young Coconut Hound being fostered in NEWMARKET, ON (formerly fostered at Coconut Hound Haven Sanctuary in Luperon in the Dominican Republic). Her short-haired coat is a Fawn Brown and she has a cute White front sock on her left leg! Hi I am DIXIE!!! My foster mom says ...I'm a little shy at first, but you just need to get to know me! I am good with children, other dogs, and well cats I've learned to live with them!! I love going for walks and I especially love to run. She says that I would make someone a great jogging partner, since I love to run so much!!! DIXIE and her two sisters Pixie (also available for adoption) and Bixie (now adopted and living in Canada) came into our care at the end of August, 2021. We have a store in Cabarete where people can purchase pet supplies for their own animals and also great DCDR swag. The store is on the 2nd floor of a building. One morning one of our volunteers arrived for their shift and discovered these 3 tiny 10 week old puppies weighing between 4 and 5 pounds each on the bottom doorstep in a box. She quickly called another volunteer and arrangements were made to bring them to our Sanctuary. AGAIN, their only crime was being born female. We were lucky, they were quite healthy and in good shape but we put them into our isolation building immediately as of course we knew they were unvaccinated. FAST forward months later and look at the beauties they have become. If you see them in person it is easier to tell them apart but they have a lot of similar physical characteristics. What they also share is their loving natures. They adore sitting on our volunteers' laps for a cuddle after having a bath and getting their nails clipped and their ears cleaned. They also love playtime and are indifferent to cats - EVEN WHEN OUR MOLLY wants to share a lap with them! DIXIE is a natural also walking on leash. The video you see is her very first attempt doing so! DIXIE is just over 1 years old (we have given her the honorary birthday of June 10th, 2021) and weighs approximately 51 pounds. DIXIE is up-to-date on vaccinations and spayed. DIXIE is microchipped and registered. DOTTY is a smaller, young Coconut Hound being Halifax, Nova Scotia (formerly fostered at Coconut Hound Haven Sanctuary in Luperon in the Dominican Republic.) Her medium-to-long-haired coat is CREAM that has hints of orangey-red when she gets wet. .... AND A GREAT FANNED TAIL!... and, of course TRADEMARK COCONUT HOUND EARS that go UP & DOWN!! DOTTY'S foster parent says she loves belly rubs and going for walks! She loves to sniff and is good on leash. She has not shown any reactivity to other dogs on leash. She loves her grub! She likes treats and bones and will even steal the food right off your plate if she can get hold of it. She has been sharing bowls of food with her foster sister and it hasn't been a problem. She is mostly potty trained, however will have an occasional accident in the house, especially if she is scared, she will pee. She needs a routine when it comes to doing her business. She's starting doing more business on her walks now which is good. She loves to be cozy with a blanket and some toys. She is mostly lazy, as long as she gets a daily walk. She also gets cases of the "zoomies" where she will run around the house happy and playful. She does still have some puppy energy! If she finds a loose sock, you better believe she will make it her chew toy. She is very slow warming up to others. Very nervous, and sometimes this comes out as growls, barks, or even lunging at people. She would do best with a home that has time and patience to let her grow accustom to her, where she can gain confidence again and trust. She would do best without small children running around, as this would spook her. She would do best without cats as she is scared of them and will lunge and snap at them. She loves her foster dog sister and loves to give her kisses.  DOTTY was found with 13 other dogs (including her mother Didi and sisters Dolly (now adopted) and Delta). They had been owned dogs and the owner had left the area but paid someone to feed them daily. They were trapped inside a building in the middle of the town of Luperon and never went outside. After several complaints by neighbours to the police of awful smells and barking - the authorities and Kim Watson from DCDR were called in. What they found was horrendous. Sadly the majority of the dogs (10) were already dead. In order to be able to enter the building, the fire department was called in as due to the smell and major health concerns, they needed to remove the corpses of the deceased dog and hose the walls and building floors down in order for Kim and Nando to rescue the remaining surviving 4 dogs (Didi, Delta, Dolly and Dotty). We started vaccinations immediately and we have started her on 30 day dose of the antibiotic Doxycycline as we know she likely has Ehrlichiosis by the amount she bled when we removed the ticks, plus her gums were very white. DOTTY was immediately friendly with our volunteers and loved her first bath so much. She immediately settled in onto a bed we keep in our isolation area and didn't want to leave - she was so happy for human company. She was so happy to get all the dead ticks off. On her arrival, amazingly she immediately took to being on a leash! DOTTY is approximately 1 years old (we have given her the honorary birthday of July 5, 2021) and she weighs approximately 21 pounds (she is very fluffy so looks bigger). DOTTY is up-to-date on vaccinations and spayed. She will be microchipped and registered before flying. DOTTY is available for adoption in Canada and on-Island. Please understand when you are adopting a dog that DCDR relies upon the generosity of Volunteer Travel Companions to bring your new companion to their forever homes in Canada or the US. If you are looking for a forever friend - I might just be the right pup for you? HAPPY HENRY is a Coconut Hound-Shepherd Mix now being fostered in KINGSTON, Ontario (formerly at the Coconut Hound Haven in Luperon in the Dominican Republic). His short-to-medium haired coat is REDDISH-BROWN with amazing highlights in the sun.          HENRY qualifies for our reduced/senior adoption fees. HENRY'S foster parent says long term the best conditions for him to have is a quieter comfortable place & stress free life. Henry would do great with an older person who has a fenced & even not huge yard. Just a spot he can lounge outside to his heart’s content & someone to cuddle on the couch with.  *The less stairs he has in his life the better. He can do them, but does require assistance on occasion. Short carpeted staircases are easier for Henry to manage.* He is a very sweet boy though and loves his people. He’ll need someone who is happy for his "snuggles & occasional kisses." ***HENRY'S  foster really emphasizes he'd do well with a yard to lounge in, and to be with an elderly couple/person. He will need help with stairs.*** HENRY was brought to a DCDR volunteer's house by local Dominican men. They found him wandering on the road and saw that he had a wound on his neck and ear and was also limping. They knew he needed help as the wounds were infected and had screwworms in them. They said he didn't have an owner.  His one ear is now missing and he is missing some toes on his left front foot. We got him cleaned up, vaccinated and neutered right away. HENRY's ear wound healed nicely at first but the opening was too small and he began to get inner ear infections. We had him on constant antibiotics and did ear swabs. A surgeon in Santiago agreed to do a revision surgery on HENRY so that he would no longer get infections but also to make sure that he was in no pain. HENRY gets around great despite all he has been through and walks with a small limp - but can run like the dickens as you can see in one of his videos. HENRY is a fun loving boy and would make a great addition to any home. HENRY is such a tolerant fella as well - he was in a large pen with young puppies with huge personalities Shadow, Penny, Nikki and Gabi as you will see in one of his videos! HENRY is a definite favourite with our volunteers. HENRY is house-trained. He walks very well on leash and travels wonderfully in a car. He is a calming personality on other dogs (and humans alike). HENRY is about 5 years old, with an honorary birthday of May 12, 2017, and currently weighs 57 pounds - we are working on reducing his weight as this gain occurred from him having to be immobile for a period of time to heal. When at his ideal weight, he will weigh around 45 pounds - a traditional size for a male Coconut Hound. HENRY is fully vaccinated and neutered. He is also microchipped and registered. HENRY is available for adoption in Canada. If you are looking for a forever friend - I might just be the right pup for you! CLICK on my link to put in your adoption request. They no longer had any space in their homes or shelter so we agreed to assist them by taking several of their young puppies back in November, 2021. JAVA currently lives in a foster home with several dogs weighing just a few pounds to very large. She also has a house cat to tell her what to do. JAVA is a lovely girl who practised walking on leash while still at the Sanctuary (see her video) and walks very well. Hi, I'm Jimbo! ATTENTION PLEASE!!!!  I just want everyone to know I am a big sweetheart.  I am not a big fan of cats, so I would like to find a furever home with another dog sibling but no cats PLEASE.  I am a Coconut Hound being fostered in the Montreal area, formerly fostered in the Dominican Republic. My medium coat is Brown. Hi, I’m Jimbo! I enjoy going for walks and am good on leash, unless I see a squirrel, then I’m gone! I wouldn’t complain if you had a backyard but I could also live without one. As long as you take me to an open area like a dog park so that I can run around safely and keep up my unique physique.  My foster mom is a veterinary technician so I go to work with her every day where I’ve met quite a few dogs. I seem to get along mostly with calm females who aren’t too in my face. I really like my canine foster sister; we play a lot! Foster mom says I shouldn’t be in a home with cats. She tries to tell me to “leave them!” but I don’t really listen; they’re so fast and fun to chase!  I’m very much an old soul whose favorite pass-time is lounging on the couch so I could easily live in a condo or apartment. I won over my foster parents' hearts the instant we met by walking up to them and nestling into their laps. Seriously, all I want is love! Jimbo was rescued from the main street of Veron. At first he seems very stand offish, but he is such a lover and just makes you want to hug him and squeeze him and give him all your love. By his looks he seems like the perfect partner to go to the gym and lift some weights! At the shelter we like to call him names like “John Cena”. He is a ladies man for sure but a little territorial with the males. Despite his features, he is a bundle of love and he has such a soft heart. He loves the puppies, they can climb all over him if they want and he just loves the attention like the fun uncle! Jimbo is such a fun pup to be around. And he loves to lay on the cool floor and give us puppy dog eyes when he wants attention or we make him move so we can clean the floors. He sure wins a lot of arguments with the workers at the shelter with his adorable face and those puppy dog eyes!!! He is already leash-trained AND gets along well with kids. Jimbo is 5 years old (we have given him the honorary birthday of May 18th, 2017) and weighs approximately 44 pounds. Jimbo will be up-to-date on vaccinations, neutered and ready to find his forever home. He is microchipped and registered. Jimbo is available for adoption in Canada. Our volunteers are very busy caring for a high volume of animals and do not get a lot of chances to take photos and be at computers for updates. Thank you for understanding and for your continued support of DCDR! show less

HI! My name is Kara - I am being fostered in the MONTREAL area. I am a beautiful and rare (except in the DR it seems) Ginger female. My estimated DOB is May 1st, 2022.  I am almost 5 months old.  Kara is extremely intelligent! Like more than the average cat. She loves to play! She talks alot but has the cutest little meow. Kara is not a cat that likes to be held and cuddled that much, but she appreciates to be petted when she is in the mood. She would be good in a home with at least another cat or dog. She is also good with kids. So why am I in foster care you ask? Well I was found all alone on a large beach called La Boca. There were no houses in site. Fortunately a nice lady spotted me crying and came to check me out. I wasn't feeling well and I had a large lump on my leg. She scooped me up and took me home. She then went and found this place called the DCDR donation store. She talked to the helpful lady who was working that day and they messaged with another cat lady. The vet then advised on some medication for me. Seems I got bit by something and it made me really sick. But now I am all better. And the BEST PART?! While my wonderful rescuer can't keep me much longer as she is leaving the country, the nice cat ladies at DCDR said they could put me in something called foster care and help me find a family to call my own. I am SO excited. Maybe that someone is you?? I promise to cuddle with you and I won't hog the computer like most kids my age. Kara is up to date on vaccinations, spayed, microchipped and registered.  Kara is available for adoption in Canada. If you are looking for a forever friend - I might just be the right kitty for you! Hi I'm Khai, I am being fostered in Hannon, ON in Canada. Khai is a great kitty and he really loves food!  He’s still very timid because my female cat Daisy isn’t nice to him. Sadly she lunges at him and he doesn’t defend himself. I have another cat who does fine with him so clearly it’s all my female cat issues .  The sweet boy would do great with a family, or individual who will be patient and offer him tons of TLC. My home currently does not have any dogs; so his interactions are limited to when he was trying to survive the streets of Dominican. He is very gentle kitty so I don’t see this being an issue.  Loveable Khai is currently recovering from a broken pelvis after being hit by a car. He also has a wound to his tail which may require amputation in the future.  It turns out he was "relocated" from a local hotel. He must have been so out of sorts he got into traffic and was hit. He is estimated to be about 1 year old. We have given him the unofficial birthday of July 26th, 2022 Poor Khai was spotted by one of our DCDR volunteers when she was going to work her shift at our voluneer store. He was laying just outside the door. Fortunate for him he came to the right spot! He was scooped up and taken into the store. On inspection not only was Khai lethargic he also had a serious wound to his tail. He was then quickly picked up by another one of our volunteers and taken to the vet. He was x rayed and was found to have a broken pelvis and a severly bruised and swollen leg. His tail may need a partial amputation in the future. He is on antibiotics and an anti inflammatory and pain med and has made great progress! He will be ready to go to a forever home very soon show less

KONA is a young Coconut Hound being fostered in DARTMOUTH, NS (formerly fostered at Coconut Hound Haven Sanctuary in Luperon in the Dominican Republic). Her short-haired coat is TAN and with CREAM markings on her chest. HI I'm  " Kona-roo" !!  Could you be my furever hoomans?! I love my foster home but my foster mom tells me I need hoomans of my own to love and spoil me, I'm such a good girl. Those magic words "such a good girl".  Foster mom likes to say that ALOT! Let's see....I'm completely housetrained (good girl), I can be left alone free roaming with my foster siblings (good girl), I chew my toys not the furniture (GOOD GIRL!), I sleep in my crate all night (good morning my good girl!). I take treats very gently (good girl)....I'm dog and cat friendly...such a good girl. I'm a bit of a cuddle bug so I hope you are too. I LOVE being outdoors. I run and play in my fenced in yard with my doggie siblings. There is an exciting game called "Wanna go for a walk?!" OH boy! That's fun! I find it a tad scary, the big world out there but everyday I'm learning that leash walking can be very enjoyable. Foster mom says I'm low to medium energy, I'm just happy to be where ever she is. Now I am still just a baby of 14 months old. So foster mom says it takes time to learn to be not just a good girl, but an amazing girl! I'm working on things like basic commands, leash walking and trusting strangers. I'm still timid in the house of all the scary sounds and shadows, but everyday I trust the house more and more that it won't hurt me. Please be patient with me, I do want to be brave, I'm learning so many things all at once and I'm told it just takes time and love. I'M KONA-ROO!! Could I possibly be the dog for you? KONA is part of the "Coffee Pup Litter" and was found with her two sisters Mocha and Java (also available for adoption) and Java by another rescue group on the island. They no longer had any space in their homes so we agreed to assist them by taking several of their very young puppies. This litter was about 9 weeks old when they came into care at CHH. KONA is walks well on leash with our volunteers and she "offers to sit" without a command. She is a calmer pup who enjoys playing with other dogs in her pen. KONA is just over 1 year old (we have given her the honorary birthday of August 25, 2021) and weighs approximately 34 pounds. KONA is up-to-date on vaccinations, is spayed and ready to find her forever home. She is microchipped and registered. KONA is available for adoption in Canada. If you are looking for a forever friend - I might just be the right pup for you? CLICK on my link to put in your adoption request.
