About Shasta T

Adoption Fee: $No Adoption Fee, Medical Care Covered for the Life of the Dog

Shasta T. is a gentle male German Shepherd Dog who came to Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue from a local shelter.  Shasta was found stray.  He was alone, hungry and suffering from a severe skin condition.  His skin condition appears to have come from a chemical or burn accident.  While his skin is improving, he will need ongoing medication.  The best way to describe Shasta is a gentle giant. He loves to be petted and doted on.  Shasta can be pushy around food, but he takes treats gently and is overall very good with other dogs.  Shasta is great with children as well.  Shasta is house trained and crate trained.  Although noisy in the car at first, he has improved his car manners during his time in foster care and now settles down after a few minutes.

Shasta T. Summary:
- Shasta is a male, 10 yrs old, weighs 130 lbs, current on shots
- Good with Adults, dogs, children, and travel in the car
- No Cats

Shasta passed a set of evaluation tests before being accepted into the TSGSR.  The tests are not intended to assess how smart the dog is but are important for TSGSR to determine if the dog is expected to be safe in a family home.   The tested behaviors check to see if the dog will guard or protect food or toys from people, will tolerate handling all over its body (including ears, nose, lips to check teeth, lifting paws, belly, back, and gently pulling the tail) and the ability to get along with other well behaved dogs.  He remained calm during all of these tests and showed no aggressive tendencies.

Please join us in welcoming Shasta to TSGSR!   Check back often.  We will be updating his bio as we learn more about him!

What's Next for Shasta T:
Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue (TSGSR) will continue to see that Shasta  is well cared for and receives all medical care needed for his well being while in our care.  In addition, TSGSR is beginning a search for an adoptive home for Shasta.  He will come to his new home with a supply of food, a cushy pad if wanted, and other goodies such as toys. There is no adoption fee.   His medical care is covered for the rest of his life.

If you want to learn more about Shasta, or are interested in possibly providing an adoptive or foster home, please send us a message by clicking on the "Ask About Me" button.  We will often get feedback or "updates" from a dog's foster home and as any updates become available they will be included here.

IBaxter T. is a very sweet and affectionate male German Shepherd Dog who loves to be petted.  Baxter T. is a wonderfully goofy dog with a charming under-bite.  He is super friendly in meeting people and other dogs.  He pulls hard on lead when being walked on a flat collar but is a very polite walker when being walked on a pinch collar, without any pressure being applied.  Baxter could afford to lose a few pounds but he loves treats.  Although he will occasionally lunge to get to a treat, he takes them gently.  Baxter obeys basic commands (“sit” “come” and “no”) and he shows his appreciation for human company with lots of kisses and licks.  Baxter has occasional stiffness after walking but overall he is active and energetic.  Baxter came to Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue from a shelter in Southern California.  He was found stray suffering from an ear infection and skin condition.  Although scared he was very affectionate with the shelter staff and appreciated their care.  Baxter had ear canal surgery in July to clear up his ear infection and with good nutrition and brushing his skin and coat have improved.  Baxter T. Buddy T. is a 10-year-old male German Shepherd Dog who was found stray in Southern California.  He was covered in dirt, starving and had open sores on his ears.  Shelter staff found him to be a social boy who was very eager for human attention.  Buddy walked past the many stressed and barking dogs in the shelter, remaining focused on the people around him.  Buddy had an accident at some point, resulting in a shortened tail that he was wagging in circles to show how appreciative he was of receiving love and medical treatment.  TSGSR staff visited Buddy and found a gentle giant with a big personality.  Buddy is now being cared for by TSGSR volunteers at Thulani Central.  He rides well in the car, gets along with other dogs and is good with middle school aged children as well as adults.  He has leash manners and obeys basic commands. Thulani volunteers all love to walk and brush Buddy!  He has a personality that pulls people in and makes them smile. He will make a wonderful addition to a family with love to share. Buddy T. Buttercup T. is a beautiful, athletic 10-year-old female GSD mix.  She wandered into a family’s yard and when animal control came to “capture” her – she came as soon as they whistled.  At the time she had open wounds on her legs and may have been hit by a car.  She appears to have been a very well loved dog, but her family could not be found.  A rescue group brought her out of the animal shelter.  The rescue that cared for her then reached out to Thulani to take her and get her adopted.   Buttercup’s legs have healed and she is ready for a new home.  She is quite a beauty!  She is likely a GSD/Collie mix, very agile and can readily walk several miles.  She is very interested in meeting people and other dogs but can be excitable and at times “bossy” with other female dogs.  Her coat is lovely and she enjoys being brushed.  Buttercup is housetrained. Buttercup T. Daniel T. is a distinguished 14-year-old male German Shepherd Dog (GSD) that was owner surrendered to the shelter.   The shelter volunteers advised that even at 14 years old he still knows how to have fun.   He tries to enjoy each day as much as possible which could involve an activity as simple as enjoying a wonderful sunbathing session.  He was affectionately referred to as their cute grandpa dog by one shelter volunteer.   He is not the dog you would go running with or take on extended walks but he would enjoy short meanders in the neighborhood and he definitely will fill your home with his abundant affection.     Daniel T. Summary: - Daniel is a Male, 14 yrs old, weighs 105lbs, current on shots, house-trained - Good with Adults, some other dogs, and travel in the car As you can likely see from looking at his included video Daniel is very friendly with the other dogs in his shelter playgroup and he does limp a bit on his right rear leg,  The shelter vets did take a set of XRAYs of Daniels hindquarters and did confirm that his limp was related to arthritis in his spine, hip and stifle (equivalent to the human knee).    This condition is not uncommon in older GSDs and at the age of 14 Daniel seems to be doing quite well... especially without having the benefit of medications for this condition.    Fortunately for Daniel, the shelter vet immediately addressed his condition and got him started on a canine NSAID that should ease the pain and inflammation of his arthritis.   Undoubtedly, this will have a positive quality of life improvement for Daniel so that his sunbathing sessions will be even more sweeeeet!    Medications like Meloxicam or similar NSAIDs are also quite inexpensive (~ 10 to 25 cents per day) although Daniel's adopter will not need to account for this cost.   Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue (TSGSR) will cover Daniel's related medical costs for the rest of his life. Even though Daniel is a mellow dog and would clearly pass the Thulani behavior tests he was evaluated to assure that he could be expected to be safe and do well in a family home.  The behavior tests include a check to see if he will guard or protect food from people and a check to see if he will tolerate a full-body feel test that ends up touching most areas of his body (ears, snout, check of his teeth, lifting paws, gently pulling his tail, and much more...).  Lastly, we always check to see if a dog can get along with other well-behaved dogs.    Daniel did indeed pass these tests without any incidents and as you can see in his included video he does get along nicely with other well behaved dogs. Daniel was rescued from a S. Cal Shelter and was transported to Thulani Central in N. Cal (headquarters for TSGSR) where he is setting in.   Daniel was calm and quiet for the 6+ hour ride to Thulani Central.    The trip was broken up with frequent rest stops along the way not only helping Daniel to take care of nature's call but also helping our volunteer transport drivers get a break.    At 105 lbs Daniel did need the help of a folding ramp to get into one of our taller transport vehicles but seemed to do fine with our assistance showing him the way. Please join us in welcoming Daniel T. to Thulani Central.   We are still getting to know Daniel so we will be continuing to update his bio. What's Next for Daniel T.: Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue (TSGSR) will continue to see that Daniel is well cared for and receives all medical care needed for his well being while in our care.  In addition, TSGSR is beginning a search for an adoptive home that will care for him for the rest of his life.  Daniel will come to his new home with a supply of food, a cushy pad if wanted, and other goodies such as toys.  Daniel’s medical expenses will be covered for the rest of his life by Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue (TSGSR)! COMING SOON! Meet Ginger T! This girl has quite a story. Sadly, her owner died and when no one came for her, she ended up at a shelter. She was adopted, then returned soon after due to concerns that she had end-of-life neurological problems. Upon her return to the shelter, Ginger appeared to be a little “wonky”, but nothing appeared life threatening. The following day, the vet spent time with Ginger, examined her, watched her walk around and felt that she should be ok, but needed rescue ASAP. The shelter staff immediately reached out to Thulani for help. When our evaluator met this beautiful senior, it was clear that Ginger is an affectionate dog who wants to be loved. She will put her head in your hands to get pets and lean on you for comfort. Since Ginger also got along well with other dogs at the shelter, she passed our evaluation with flying colors! Ginger has been with her Thulani foster family for almost two weeks and she is thriving. Every day she is a little less wobbly, and none of it has stopped Ginger from having fun. She has been happily running about exploring the property, and playing with her new canine sibings. She initially wasn’t quite sure what to make of the resident dog-savvy cat, who was very interested in checking Ginger out! But it didn’t take long for them to happily co-exist, so Ginger is what we call cat workable. Ginger T Summary: - Ginger is a spayed female, 10 yrs old, weighs 79 lbs, current on shots - Good with Adults, dogs, and travel in the car - Kids TBD, Cat workable Check back often.  We will be updating her bio as we learn more about her! What's Next for Ginger T: Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue (TSGSR) will continue to see that she is well cared for. After a follow up vet visit, she will be available for adoption. We are taking advance adoption applications, so if you are interested in her, please apply early! Harvey T. is a handsome, “younger senior” German Shepherd Dog who was found stray and taken to a shelter in northern California.  Harvey was stressed in the shelter but very sweet with the people who cared for him.  He was very snuggly with the staff but would bark often trying to get attention.  Harvey is now adjusting to his interim home at a Thulani Central. Volunteers noticed that he is motivated by treats but is a bit assertive when taking treats from the hand.  Harvey will benefit from a strong leader and could also benefit from a refresher on basic obedience training as is common for many rescue dogs. Harvey takes direction well and has a friendly disposition towards humans, which bodes well for his making minor corrections to his behavior such as pulling on the leash while walking and barking when seeking attention. Thulani volunteers are working with him and he responds well to corrections. Despite his tendency to pull on the leash, he walked calmly past all of the barking dogs on his way out of the shelter.  He is not expected to do well with cats, but he gets along well with other dogs.  He likes to chase a ball and is very interested in his surroundings but does not want to be left behind or ignored.  Harvey will likely establish a strong bond over time with a confident leader. COMING SOON! Meet Lobo Negro T, the newest dog to join the Thulani pack. Lobo was found as a stray in Northern California and is now settling comfortably into his foster home while we continue to get to know him. Lobo Negro has an excellent temperament. He is a confident, affectionate dog who eagerly greets new people and dogs with a wagging tail. He has freely enjoyed the company of 4 other dogs (3 males, 1 female) in his foster home. Due to his high prey drive, cats would not be a good idea. Lobo Negro would do well in a home with other dogs of any size, but he would also be perfectly content being the only dog.  Lobo Negro has excellent mobility for an older dog. He walks extremely well on a leash, and the few times that he pulls, he will stop with a gentle nudge. He can easily walk several miles and would love being a hiking companion. Lobo Negro is extremely smart. He knows basic commands such as no, sit, and down, and his foster family suspects he knows many more. He is highly food-motivated, and will invite himself to enjoy food on the counter if unattended. However, he will stop with a simple verbal correction. Lobo Negro will thrive in a home where he can get lots of mental stimulation and exercise. He is very relaxed in new situations and rides well in the car, so he would enjoy going on outings to the beach, hiking, or other dog friendly places. Lobo Negro is eager to please and ready to be a wonderful companion to his new family. Lobo Negro T Summary: - Lobo Negro is a neutered male, about 9 yrs old, weighs 83 lbs, current on shots - Good with adults and teenagers, dogs, has been fine meeting a small child - Not Good with Cats - Currently located in Northern California What's Next for Lobo Negro T: Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue (TSGSR) will continue to see that he is well cared for.  We plan to have him checked out by our vet prior to making him available for adoption.  He will come to your home with a supply of food, a cushy pad if wanted, and other goodies such as toys. Margo T. is an athletic 9-year-old female German Shepherd Dog who was found stray and brought to a shelter in Southern California.  When she was found, she was emaciated and had a football sized mass in her abdomen.  Her outlook was poor unless the shelter staff found a rescue organization that was able to help.  Thulani volunteers came to the shelter to see Margo.  She was friendly and she knew basic commands like “sit” and “come”.  She was a great candidate for adoption.  The mass (6 lbs) been removed and the surgery was deemed curative by the pathologist.  She is quickly regaining stamina and weight.  She has a very smooth stride, can easily walk a mile already and volunteers expect her to be a great walking companion.  Margo is very affectionate and she loves to cuddle.  She is not interested in sharing “her people” with other dogs but she is fine with meeting other dogs face to face on walks.  We recommend that she be an only dog in the home.  She is a very loving dog and has bonded very quickly to her caretakers. Margo T. Summary: - Margo is a female, 9 yrs old, weighs 66lbs, current on shots - Good with Adults, children and travel in the car / We recommend she be an only dog - Not good with cats Margo passed a set of evaluation tests before being accepted into the TSGSR.  The tests are not intended to assess how smart the dog is but are important for TSGSR to determine if the dog is expected to be safe in a family home.   The tested behaviors check to see if the dog will guard or protect food or toys from people, will tolerate handling all over its body (including ears, nose, lips to check teeth, lifting paws, belly, back, and gently pulling the tail).  She remained calm during all of these tests and showed no aggressive tendencies.       Please join us in welcoming Margo to TSGSR!   Check back often.  We will be updating her bio as we learn more about her! What's Next for Margo T: Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue (TSGSR) will continue to see that Margo is well cared for and receives all medical care needed for her well being while in our care.  In addition, TSGSR is beginning a search for an adoptive home that will care for her for the rest of her life.  She will come to his new home with a supply of food, a cushy pad if wanted, and other goodies such as toys. There is no adoption fee.  Because Margo is on the younger side, she has limited medical coverage – see a TSGSR volunteer for more information. Raptor T. is a gorgeous 8-year-old male who came to Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue from a local shelter.  We don’t know very much about Raptor’s past, other than he was found as a stray with another GSD. Raptor is a kind, gentle dog who gets along with people of all ages and dogs of all sizes.  His foster has found him to be the ideal family dog.  Raptor's perfect home is one where he will be an integral member of the family.  He is very people oriented and happily solicits attention from his humans.  He enjoys the company of other dogs and is interested in spending time with them.  He would thrive in an active household that has lots of visitors, both human and canine, coming and going.  In his spare time, Raptor loves to fetch his ball, play soccer in the yard and take casual walks in the park. Not unusual for a GSD his age, he gets a bit stiff in the hind end and needs to skip going jogging or hiking with you.  As much as Raptor loves being with his people, he is content to chill out by himself for a few hours every now and then.  He is a perfectly well behaved gentleman when left alone in the house.  Although we don’t know how he is with cats, we think he might be able to learn to adapt to a dog-savvy cat given the right introduction and consistent training. This prince of a dog is ready to go to his forever home.  Will you be his happy ending?   Raptor T. Roxanne T. is a lovely 8-year-old female German Shepherd Dog who came to Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue from a local shelter.  She is on the small side, housetrained and treat motivated.  Roxanne is very sweet and really wants to be loved.  Thulani volunteers find that she can be easily overwhelmed and needs confidence building.  She draws her support mainly from interaction with people.  Although she can live with another dog, she would likely do best as an only dog without other smaller pets in the home.  Roxanne enjoys being petted and brushed.  She is a great fit for a quiet, loving family.  We have a lot more to learn about Roxanne and will update her bio as we learn more about her.
