About Ana T.
Adoption Fee: $no adoption fee
Ana T's foster mom describes her as a wonderfully loving and energetic middle/late aged female German Shepherd Dog (GSD) that was found stray in S. California and was taken to a nearby shelter. Although she had a bubbly personality and was well mannered her outward appearance showed that she had been neglected for some time. On arrival at the shelter, her coat was tattered, she had chemical burns on her back and bilateral ear infections. None of these conditions were life-threatening but they were certainly diminishing her quality of life. Although we have received vet estimates of Ana's age to be in the 10-year-old category, after time in her foster home with good nutrition and care, it seems clear that she is closer to 8 years old. As you can see in the included video she can be very spunky and wants to play like a dog half her estimated age.
Ana T. Summary:
- Ana is a Female, 8 yrs old, weighs 74lbs, current on shots, spayed, house-trained
- Good with Adults, kids (10+ and above), dogs, walks, off-leash, and travel in the car.
In some ways, Ana was lucky to have been taken to the shelter. This is where she was able to finally start to have her medical conditions treated and where she started to enjoy regular feedings. Also at the shelter, she received a MicroChip which has now been registered by Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue (TSGSR) so if she ever becomes lost or stray again her registered MicroChip and her numbered collar tag will give her a good shot at being reunited with her new family.
In her foster home, Ana and an existing male foster GSD needed a day or two of careful introduction, but they soon became the best of friends. Ana attends daycare every weekday and is a favorite there. She gets along fine with all sizes of other dogs there but she prefers to wrestle occasionally with similar sized large dogs. She absolutely LOVES people. She’ll sleep with you if you let her, although her foster home does not allow it so Ana knows that her sleeping place is with her foster pack. She’s a VERY smart female with perfect protective instincts – including a deep bark with approaching strangers, yet without any lunging. Once she knows you though...beware because she’s a kisser!!!!
Ana enjoys her crate and even voluntarily sleeps there. As with many GSDs, Ana views her crate as her safe place, and it a place she can go to relax or escape from anxiety-provoking situations. While she only has a resident outdoor cat and chicken to judge against, after a week in the home she listens to commands very well so can be called away from any prey (although she does want to chase). With careful experienced introductions, she may enjoy any other non-dog pets (chicken, cat, etc) in the house. Ana is currently helping nurse two baby birds with her foster family. She loves to fetch, will play tug with her dog friends, and enjoys a nightly wrestle. She enjoys walks and even ankle-deep water play, however, she is also perfectly happy being a couch potato. Her ideal home would one where Ana can socialize with her people, go for nice walks or car rides, and allows time to relax.
To be qualified as a potential Thulani Dog and join the TSGSR senior dog program Ana had to pass a number of behavior tests. These tests were selected to assure that her behavior is consistent with other dogs that have been found to be safe in a family home. We check to assure that all potential Thulani Dogs pass a full body feel test, do not guard or protect food or toys from people, and are good around other well-behaved dogs. Passing these tests is measured by showing no undesirable reactive behaviors. Based on her behavior tests and other shelter interactions Ana completely PASSED all of the behavior requirements needed to become a Thulani Dog.
Ana has now been rescued from the shelter and is staying with a short term TSGSR foster home near-by the shelter. Soon she will be transported to Thulani Central (headquarters for TSGSR) in N. California where she will be staying in a longer-term foster home until she finds a forever adoptive home.
Please join us in welcoming Ana T as the most recent Thulani Dog! We are still getting to know Ana so we will be continuing to update her bio.
What's Next for Ana T.:
Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue (TSGSR) will continue to see that Ana is well cared for and receives all medical care needed for her well being while in our care. In addition, TSGSR is beginning a search for an adoptive home that will care for her for the rest of her life. Ana will come to her new home with a supply of food, a cushy pad if wanted, and other goodies such as toys.
Since Ana is younger than the 10+ year old dogs that Thulani usually rescues, she will come with only limited medical coverage.
