About Topper
Meet Topper! Topper is 13 lbs of personality. He loves running full speed into his people's lap and demanding love and affection. He loves to be as close as possible to his person. Topper is good with other dogs, and is cool with going on a long walk or taking a long nap - he's just happy to be around his people!
Please know that he won't immediately fall in love with you at a meet and greet but once in your home, he should warm up within 24 hours and be your absolute best friend for life!
Topper has made it clear that he does not like to be pet by strangers and you will be a stranger to him at your meet and greet. He gives very clear body language (try to move away, show his teeth) and strangers who do not respect his boundaries will receive a warning nip. Topper has met with a trainer who gave recommendations on building confidence and trust with his new owners, but Topper is depending on you to advocate for HIS needs over those of strangers. You will need to tell strangers "No, you cannot pet him." That doesn't mean they can't give him a treat! Peanut butter ones are his favorite.
You may be thinking - but I love having friends over! Topper has had no issues with guests in his foster home because his foster family has set clear boundaries that he does not want to be pet. Topper loves these guest the best because they get to give him treats instead.
Topper is very quiet considering he's a Chihuahua! His foster mom works from home and she isn't worried about him interrupting her meetings. Topper can be loud when left alone but is not destructive. His foster family is helping him build his confidence while he is left alone so he will not cry so much. Topper also hates his foster home's refrigerator. It makes a weird sound that makes him nervous. He's getting better at calming down quicker when it makes the sound.
Topper is up to date on vaccinations and is spayed or neutered. (puppies under the age of 6 months may not be sterilized prior to adoption, if this is the case your adoption coordinator will discuss the process with you).
To adopt or learn more about Topper you must fill out an adoption application. To find the application, visit our website: WWW.SANDYPAWSRESCUE.COM ** PLEASE READ: If a dog/puppy is listed, then s/he is currently available for adoption. Their information is correct to the best of our abilities and the information we have been given as of the day of posting. In some cases this dog may be pending an adoption already, and their profile has not been updated yet. Please note, SPR does not guarantee the breed of any dog or puppy unless stated otherwise. All breeds listed are educated best estimates by transferring shelter staff, our volunteers or our vets. The dog may have some genetic material of an American Staffordshire Terrier (pit bull). The dogs are usually mixes of many breeds, making them the All American MUTT. Our dogs are rescued from various situations (kill-shelters, owner surrenders, strays, etc). It is most likely that both their parents were strays and mixes of some sort.
If you are interested in this dog, you MUST submit an application. Sandy Paws Rescue does not a have a public shelter in Mass, so there is no building you can visit without an appointment. Our dogs live in private foster homes or boarding kennels down south until adopted, and foster care homes through out MV, Cape Cod and other parts of MA. A majority of our dogs are adopted/spoken for prior to transport and release from state mandated isolation. To learn more about our rescue, adoption fees, and procedures, review the list of FAQ’s on our website at WWW.SANDYPAWSRESCUE.COM
**The FIRST step in adopting an animal from our rescue is to submit a completed adoption application.
