About Nala

Adoption Fee: $600.00

Nala is a 3.5 year old 78 lb ‘red’ Golden Retriever who was surrendered to GRRACE just a few short months ago needing a quiet place to land to prepare for right knee surgery.  Her left knee was surgically corrected last fall but hadn't yet gotten to 100% when Nala's right knee gave out.  Her knees are both now surgically repaired and ready for exercise, fun and a very bright future

Nala had been the only dog in her previous homes but is now living with two resident dogs in her foster home and is having fun playing daily.  She is still comfortable being independent but has no problem joining in for playtime or roaming the yard with her foster siblings.  She likes spending time with her humans but is good with dogs - she approaches them, initiating play or just wanders the yard with them sniffing all of the locations that she can!  She will enforce a boundary but it is a quick response and then it is done.  She is not reactive and will move away from the other dogs if she isn't interested.

Nala would like a place where she can be a part of everyday activities with the whole family.  She likes kids very much and will ask to greet them in stores. She enjoys chatting with you in the morning when you wake up as she greets you with wags, kisses and asks for pets while she’s smiling at you!  She would love a home where she will be a member of the family, playing with kids and/or resident playful dogs, or being your #1 Girl!  She would flourish while spending time with her human/family at the park, lake/pond or hanging out at home near loving humans catching treats, being groomed, having belly rubs and snuggling on the sofa next to you!

What you’d want to know about Nala:

Nala will ask to get up on the sofa with you and lay there for hours while you pet her.  She sleeps there at night but always appreciates a cool floor or her soft beds as well.

Nala is talkative!  She will let you know what she wants - to go out, if someone / something is outside or if you’re not on time with dinner!  She will greet you and guests with tail wags and some barkies, even some kisses.  She likes meeting new people.  She is very sweet.  She isn’t hyper but also isn’t timid - she is the perfect balance!

Nala loves to roll in the grass and she likes being groomed/brushed too!  She gives kisses during grooming sessions.  She likes to walk through your legs to rub her back so make sure you're ready!  Along with back scratches, in the warm weather, she has been happy to walk in the rain.  No problems with storms or going out in the rain.  She loves the attention and cooing voice while being dried with a towel and she will give you kisses to say thank you!

Nala is great in the car. She is comfortable in her harness and she comes with all sorts of toys/equipment for safety in riding, swimming, brain stimulation toys and her beloved balls!  She has two orthopedic beds and will use them unless the temperatures are high then she will find a cool spot in front of a fan.  This girl is smart and lovable!

Nala wants to be with you - she loves walking and sniffing to keep her brain stimulated.  She loves to break sticks, the smell of organic fertilizer in the soil, eating grass and chasing wildlife - she needs a human with her to help her make good decisions - like avoiding eating grass that could be treated with chemicals, no swallowing sticks, etc.!  Redirecting her with a treat always works when reinforcing “no!” Or “leave it.”   She can be stubborn so a repeat and dog treat near her nose may be required!

Nala will stay close if you work from home.  If you have to go out, she will find a spot to rest near a door to be sure she sees you first thing when you get back.  She loves to go for rides if you’re able to take her.  She’s learning how to use a ramp to get up into and out of the vehicle to avoid the stress on her joints.  She needs a little assistance getting up into the car for now until her knees are stronger.  We’re using a ramp to help her get into the SUV to avoid the strain on her joints.

Nala is very interested in chasing small animals - chipmunks, squirrels, rabbits - if you have resident pets, she will need introductions and oversight, especially with cats to ensure she does not push her way into their space and scare them.  She has had limited exposure to cats so a proper introduction is essential.

Nala is food motivated and open to new commands and reinforcing the basics with treats.  This will be a great opportunity to train her to work with your family’s needs, to help her understand boundaries and help her feel safe in her new environment.  Nala knows the basics - and she is smart and a fast learner.  She may take her time to comply - she can be stubborn.

Nala’s knees will need daily exercise/walks for her to stay at a healthy weight and active to keep her strong.    She will require a daily joint supplement for the rest of her life per her surgeon and luckily, the chewable Dasequin supplement is something you can use for rewarding a good sit which is great PT for her legs.  Exercising her legs is crucial to keep them strong.  Beware though - once she is strong enough, she will use those back legs to jump up and surf your kitchen counters!  Keep human food and any items bad for dogs put away because she goes looking for goodies!

Nala is a brilliant, loving and happy dog - she is the perfect example of what we love about Goldens!

To be considered for Nala you MUST have the following;

--Structural fence.

--Active family that is committed to continuing her rehabilitation to strengthen her knees.

--Someone home often.

Single calm & cuddly 2.5-year-old red-headed female in search of her forever family. Hi!  My name is Clover.  I didn’t have a name of my own when I was rescued from the puppy mill.  Because I’m the color of the spice ‘clove’, my foster moms chose ‘Clover’ for my first name. I like my new name and I learned to answer to it very quickly. I have learned A LOT of new things over the last several weeks – including some basic commands.  I’m a pretty smart girl and I’m eager for my forever family to continue working with me. My dream home needs to have a very secure fenced yard – ideally 5-6 feet high and of a material that can’t easily be climbed.  Even though I’m happy in my foster home, dogs like me take a while to feel secure in new surroundings. We can get very nervous sometimes and think our best option is to run.  So it will be your job to protect me until I fall madly in love with you! I would also do best with another dog who can continue teaching me how to ‘be a dog.’ I like to play with my foster sis, but she is an 18-month-old pterodactyl who definitely does NOT match my play style.  She HAS taught me the fine art of begging, though!  And she has taught me to enjoy balls, toys and chew things like antlers, sterilized bones and bully sticks. And treats!  We get LOTS of treats!  Really, she hasn’t been all THAT bad of a companion – I do like sleeping near her and rolling around in the grass playing ‘jaw wars’ with her.  But a calmer, more mature dog would be a better companion for me. I really enjoy walks.  My foster moms say that I am calm and very polite on a leash.  I also ride well in a car and look forward to new adventures as I become more secure.  I’m also happy to cuddle on the couch with you and watch movies. I LOVE the Hallmark Channel!  I have not been around young children, but because I would do better in a calmer home, I would probably do best with older kids/teens – as long as it’s not too hectic of a home.  I have gotten along well with the different dogs I’ve been around (male and female).  I had a brief overnight at a house with cats.  I honestly can’t critique myself thoroughly when it comes to felines – they look and smell funny so I just left them alone. I think my ideal home would have someone who is home a lot – a retired family or someone who works from home.  I’m still unsure about the world and I need lots of support right now while I gain confidence and trust and learn just how great it is to feel love and compassion.  Right now, I’m slow to warm up to new people. But once I do, I will be your constant friend who steals your seat, your lap, your blankets and then your heart!  And, when I trust you, I talk! I mean, I REALLY talk!  My foster moms say I look like a dog, but I sound like a baby walrus!  I’m sweet and silly and I know my forever family is out there. Is it you?  I would love to spend the holidays together! Love, Clover To be considered for Clover, you MUST have the following: -       A structural fence -       Patience and willingness to help her keep learning about the world -       Another confident dog to help guide her -       A family (without young children) who has somebody home frequently If you have an approved application on file and are interested in being considered for Clover, please contact GRRACE at info@grrace.org.  You can find our adoption application and guidelines on the Adopt-A-Golden page of our website at www.grrace.org show less

Hi, my name is Dolly, but my foster mom calls me "pretty girl".  I am a 1-year-old golden weighing around 53 lbs.  I was rescued by GRRACE from a commercial breeder that did not want to use me for breeding.  How lucky am I!  I never had the luxury of living in a home prior to coming to GRRACE so everything is pretty new to me. I am a sweet girl, but I am still very scared and timid, especially around men.  I have come so far but I still need an experienced adopter who is patient and will give me the time I need to settle in, fully gain my confidence and learn that people are kind. I am still a work in progress with my leash manners and potty training. I am not a big fan of my crate, but I will go in and settle down and my foster mom does crate me when she leaves just to keep me from getting into things I shouldn't.  Because I am still unsure of things, I will require a fully fenced yard (preferably 5-6 feet).  I can jump really high and, if I get scared, I could try and run until I have time to bond with my new family.  I do not mind cats and love all dogs.  I will need another confident dog in the home to show me the ropes and to help me gain more confidence.  Small children might be too much for me right now so a home with no children or children older than 12 would probably be best. I didn't have the best start in life, but I have so much to learn and so much love to give.  Could you be my forever family? To be considered for Dolly you MUST have the following: --Tall and secure structural fence --Another confident mentor dog --No young children --Experience and time to work on gaining trust If you have an approved application on file and would like to be considered for Dolly, please contact GRRACE at info@grrace.org.  You can find our adoption application and guidelines on the Adopt-A-Golden page of our website at www.grrace.org. show less

Meet Ruth Ruth was surrendered to GRRACE by a commercial breeder who indicated she was 12 years of age.   After services with the GRRACE vets, she is believed to be younger and around 8.  This girl is ready and deserves to retire and have a home of her own.  Ruth is an exuberant spirit.  She is happy, curious and loving.  She appreciates her current canine family and would do well with a family with medium to large dogs.  Ruth is a high energy girl and weighs around 78 lbs so she can be too much for smaller dogs.  There is a cat in her foster home but they have had very little interaction so cats are unknown. Ruth adores being outside and going on walks.  She has her best leash manners when walking with another dog.  Ruth loves older kids but, due to her size and energy level, she may be too much for young kids.  She loves her stuffed animals and her person.  Ruth gravitates to her foster mom.  She can be found sitting or lying next to her most of the time and she welcomes head and body rubs.  She would love to be in a family where someone is home often. Ruth is housetrained.  She has not been crated.  She does like to help herself to items on the counter at times so she is still learning her house manners. This girl deserves to be in a home that can provide her with the life she has always deserved. Is that you? To be considered for Ruth you MUST have the following: --Structural fence --Another medium to large size dog --Preferably someone home often If you have an approved application on file and would like to be considered for Ruth, please contact GRRACE at info@grrace.org.  You can find our adoption application and guidelines on the Adopt-A-Golden page of our website at www.grrace.org. show less
