About Winnie
Winnie is a lot of personality in a small package. She's very affectionate with people, and loves to be the center of attention. She is very curious and wants to be involved in every activity. At 10 years old, she is still active and enjoys playing in the backyard and chasing squirrels; playing fetch; working on her Himalayan cheese chews; spending time on laps. She is housetrained and knows commands, sit, shake, stay, come, go potty.
Winnie loves to go out for walks in the yard but has never been leash trained so would prefer a securely fenced yard to play around in.
Winnie has lived with two indoor cats for the past five years. They got off to a rocky start, but now she mostly ignores them, but will occasionally attempt to play with them. She is NOT fond of other dogs and will need to be the only pup in her new family's life but does well with respectful kids.
Little Winnie was adopted from GDU ten years ago as an 8 week old baby. True to our commitment to every animal we rescue, when we found out circumstances made it difficult for her to remain with her mom, we decided to get right on finding her a new home. Her family is fostering her until the perfect fit is found. You can apply for sweet Winnie at greendogsunleashed.org
Winnie loves to go out for walks, but she has never done well on a leash. She lunges and pulls and barks and tries to go after anything that moves, be it a leaf or a car. Due to her build, it's been a challenge to find a harness that she can't slip out of and she's mostly limited to outside time taking place in our large backyard.
Winnie and her doggy brother are free to move around the house when we're out and have never been destructive (apart from getting into unsecured trash cans). They have comfy dog beds scattered around the house and are also allowed to be on the furniture.
Winnie does reasonably well in the car, but does best if she's being held. She does experience carsickness, but only if she's in a carrier and the drive is long.
Winnie has always lived with another dog, a small male terrier mix named Pippin. She does not get along well with other dogs, of any size or gender.
Winnie has lived with two indoor cats for the past five years. They got off to a rocky start, but now she mostly ignores them, but will occasionally attempt to play with them.
Winnie has lived with two children all her life. Our kids were 3 and 6 when we got her, and are 13 and 16 now. She is used to older kids and teens, but hasn't been around babies or young children in several years.
Winnie has lived with hamsters and hedgehogs. She only shows interest when they're brought out of their cages.
Winnie is a very sweet, somewhat spicy little lady who would love nothing more than to be someone's special one and only girl. She adores being loved and has a lot of love to give in return.
She is terrified of thunderstorms and fireworks and needs to be very close to you when they're happening. Winnie loves to explore the backyard and sometimes gets herself messy enough to need a bath. She's very cooperative in the bathtub and enjoys the blow dryer afterwards. She doesn't like having her toenails clipped, but will usually cooperate. She's also used to being brushed with a deshedding tool, but always appreciates some food bribery.
Winnie is a vacuum cleaner dog who is eager to be with you in the kitchen or whenever you're eating in case you drop a crumb. She is highly food motivated and her naughtiest habit is getting into trash cans for anything you don't drop.
The decision to find Winnie a new home took a lot of time and was not taken lightly. We love Winnie, but have come to the conclusion that finding her a new home is ultimately the kindest, safest thing we can do for her -and for our family and other dog- at this point in our lives.
At the time you are seeing this post, this dog is still available for adoption. But please know that we may be working on multiple applications already, and any one of them could be approved at any time. Please READ THIS ENTIRE DESCRIPTION and complete an adoption application, if you are interested in any of our animals. Application at www.greendogsunleashed.org If you send an inquiry to ask if the dog is still available, or just tell us you are interested, your inquiry will not be answered. FILL OUT AN APPLICATION. We can do NOTHING without that. No, we cannot tell you if he would be a match for your family without seeing an application. PLEASE KEEP READING for info.
*/*/* PLEASE NOTE: The first communication you will receive after completing an application will be an email response, which will have instructions on how to proceed. Please check your inbox AND spam folders for the next 48 hours, for this email. We will not begin processing an application without the information requested in that email. */*/*
We are happy to consider applicants from out of state on most dogs. Please read the description to see if this dog is an exception. If the applicant is approved to adopt, they MUST be willing to come to our location in Troy, VA, for a meet and greet. If all parties agree that the pup and family are a good fit, they would take the pup home at that time.
For more information about our mission and for an APPLICATION for adoption, please go to www.greendogsunleashed.com.
GDU does ask a minimum adoption fee of $400.00. This does not even come close to covering all expenses created by animals while in rescue. We are funded solely by the angels and volunteers willing to donate time and finances. This minimum fee includes DAPP, rabies if age appropriate,, heartworm test and preventative, if age appropriate, and flea and tick treatment, as well as neutering or spaying, if the animal is medically sound to undergo surgery. In an attempt to avoid tummy upset from a sudden change of food, the foster family may include a small, transitional bag of the food the dog/puppy has been eating. And if the dog/puppy has grown attached to a special item (like a toy or blanket), they may send that along, as well.
*/*/* Young puppies will receive age-appropriate vaccines, and will be spayed/neutered prior to adoption. Adopters may be required to provide additional puppy boosters and at 16 weeks of age, a rabies vaccine. Future annual vaccines, testing and monthly heartworm preventative are REQUIRED, and will be the financial responsibility of the adopter.
*****Due to the sheer number of animals and applications in our program, coupled with a limited number of volunteers, applicants MUST have patience as we process applications. If you do not hear back from us, the animal may have been adopted. We strive to let people know but sadly cannot offer reasons for denial beyond that. Any harassment of our volunteers will go unanswered and we will simply block you. Our volunteers spend their time working hard to ensure the very best for each animal. Please remember the animal, not the applicant, is our client.*****
