About Chopper T

Adoption Fee: $... No Adoption Fee

Update (May 2022):  Chopper loves to have people around all the time.  Gentle and affectionate, he especially loves getting petted.  He is a friendly playful pup who enjoys running in the yard.  His foster family say he is definitely a 'people' dog!

Chopper T is a handsome, friendly senior German Shepherd Dog (GSD) who gets along well with people and cats.  He is house trained, crate trained and generally interested in being with his people at all times.  He does not want to share his people with another dog but is an ideal companion for someone with cats and wants another companion.  He walks well on lead but is used to a pinch collar rather than a flat collar.  He is well mannered, loves attention and appears to have been loved.  He is a large boy and, on occasion, vocal.

Chopper T Summary:
- Male, 10 yrs old, weighs 92 lbs, current on shots
- Good with adults, older kids, dogs (can be selective), cats, and travels well in the car

Chopper passed a set of behavior tests before being accepted into the TSGSR.  The tests are not intended to assess how smart the dog is but are important for TSGSR to determine if the dog is expected to be safe in a family home.   The tested behaviors check to see if the dog will guard or protect food or toys from people, will tolerate handling all over its body (including ears, nose, lips to check teeth, lifting paws, belly, back, and gently pulling the tail) and the ability to get along with other well behaved dogs.  Chopper remained calm during all of these tests and showed no aggressive tendencies.

Please join us in welcoming sweet Chopper to TSGSR!   As we learn more about him we will update his bio.

What's Next for Chopper T.:
Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue (TSGSR) will continue to see that Chopper is well cared for and receives all medical care needed for his well being while in our care.  In addition, TSGSR is beginning a search for an adoptive home that will care for him for the rest of his life.  Chopper will come to his new home with a supply of food, a cushy pad if wanted, and other goodies such as toys.

If you want to learn more about him, or are possibly interested in providing an adoptive or foster home, please send us a message by clicking on the "Ask About Me" button.  We will often get feedback or "updates" from a dog's foster home and as any updates become available they will be included here.

Introducing Artemis T:  Welcome to the Thulani family Artemis T!  Artemis was adopted in 2011 but found herself back in the shelter as a stray in Southern CA.  When no one stepped up to claim her, Thulani rescued this beautiful girl.  Artemis loves everyone.  She greets both people and dogs with a wagging tail. In true shepherd fashion she loves to follow her humans.  Artemis loves to cuddle and sleep by her people, either next to them or at their feet.  Due to her very long, neglected nails prior to her arrival at Thulani, Artemis developed arthritis in her paws.  However, after a good nail trim, her mobility has significantly improved and she can go for 1-2 short walks per day as she builds her endurance.  Artemis knows basic commands, and is highly food motivated, so she could easily learn more.  Artemis is a gentle girl who can’t wait to find her family to love for the rest of her days.  Artemis T Summary: - Female, 11 yrs old, 58 pounds, current on shots - Good with adults, kids, dogs, cats and travels well in the car Artemis passed a set of evaluation tests before being accepted into TSGSR.  The tests are not intended to assess how smart the dog is but are important for TSGSR to determine if the dog is expected to be safe in a family home.  The tested behaviors check to see if the dog will guard or protect food or toys from people, will tolerate handling all over its body (including ears, nose, lips to check teeth, lifting paws, belly, back, and gently pulling the tail).  She remained calm during all of these tests and showed no aggressive tendencies. Introducing Aurora T:  Welcome to the Thulani family Aurora T!  Aurora was surrendered to the shelter with Miles T.  They are now happily settling in together at Thulani Central.  Aurora is gentle and affectionate.  She greets both people and dogs with a wagging tail, and calmly walks away from other barking dogs.  Aurora walks well on a leash.  Although at times she can get distracted and let her nose take her to new places, she is eager to please and continues to make progress on the leash.  Aurora and Miles enjoy each other’s company, and have learned to work together to unlock gates.  Aurora also loves to follow Miles when he investigates new things.  Aurora is a beautiful, social girl who is excited to find a new home with her buddy, Miles.  Aurora T Summary: - Female, 10 yrs old, 80 pounds, current on shots - Good with adults, kids, dogs, and travels well in the car - Bonded with Miles T Aurora passed a set of evaluation tests before being accepted into TSGSR. This dog remained calm during all of these tests and showed no aggressive tendencies.      What's Next for Aurora T: Aurora has been checked out by our vet and is ready for adoption.  If you are interested, please apply now!  Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue (TSGSR) will continue to see that he is well cared for.  She will come to your home with a supply of food, a cushy pad if wanted, and other goodies such as toys.  show less

NEW ARRIVAL!  Welcome to Thulani Butch T!  Butch was surrendered by his owner to a shelter in Southern California due to the owner’s medical issues.  After an exciting plane flight, Butch is settling in at Thulani Central.  Butch is a friendly boy who loves human interaction.  He loves pets, cuddles,  giving gentle kisses, and just being with people.  He does well with other dogs, but prefers when they are not in his face.  When confronted by other dogs, he calmly walks away.  He would do well with another dog as long as they respect his personal bubble.  He ignored the cat at his foster home, so could likely coexist with another cat.  Butch pulls a little bit on a leash, but with training could improve quickly.  There is just so much to sniff and explore!  He has some stiffness in his hind legs that comes up occasionally, but he still can get in and out of a car without assistance.  He loves his toys, and carries them around the house constantly.  When he is tired, Butch enjoys relaxing naps on the couch.  Butch is an incredible dog who deserves a family to love him forever.  Butch T Summary: - Male, 12 yrs old, current on shots - Good with adults, kids, dogs, cats, and travel in the car - Currently located in Northern California Butch passed a set of evaluation tests before being accepted into the TSGSR. He remained calm during all of these tests and showed no aggressive tendencies.       What's Next for Butch T: Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue (TSGSR) will continue to see that Butch is well cared for.  Butch will be checked out by our vets and will be ready for adoption soon.  TSGSR is beginning a search for an adoptive home that will care for him for the rest of his life, so please let us know if you are interested.  He will come to his new home with a supply of food, a cushy pad if wanted, and other goodies such as toys.  If you want to learn more or are interested in possibly providing an adoptive or foster home, please send us a message by clicking on the "Ask About Me" button.  We will often get feedback or "updates" from a dog's foster home and as any updates become available they will be included here.  If you would like to help Thulani save more dogs, please consider setting up a monthly donation for dog care and Donate Online Through PayPal . show less

Introducing Coso T:  Welcome to a better life Coso T!  Coso came to us in horrific shape.  He is mostly hairless from the middle of his neck to the middle of his tail, and halfway down his legs – and much of his skin is severely damaged.  He has several yet to be diagnosed growths on his skin, and appears to have additional neurological issues impairing his hip mobility.  We are currently in the process of coordinating vet visits to figure out how we can help Coso rehabilitate.  Despite the severity of his various symptoms, Coso is an incredible dog who is thrilled to be getting a lot of much needed Thulani loving care.  Coso was surrendered to the shelter by his former owners.  Determined to leave his past behind, Coso is very social with people, happily introducing himself with a wagging wail and excited for attention.  Coso has integrated well with the other large dogs in his foster home.  He is also highly food motivated, gently taking treats when offered.  He is persistent in ensuring that he gets his fair share of treats when in a group of other dogs.  Thulani will be consulting with our veterinary team to develop the best plan to help Coso on his road to recovery.  Even with his skin condition and hip mobility issues, Coso demonstrates the persistence of his strong will.  Coso is determined that nothing will stop him.  His leash manners leave lots of room for improvement, but we trust that with time and encouragement he will catch on quickly.  Coso is on the long road towards recovery, and his best days are still ahead of him. Coso T Summary: - Male, 11 yrs old, 68 pounds - Good with adults, dogs of all sizes Coso passed a set of evaluation tests before being accepted into TSGSR. This dog remained calm during all of these tests and showed no aggressive tendencies.      What's Next for Coso T: Coso has started on his treatment plan, but he has a long way to go.  Please considering donating towards Coso's care.  Visit our website at http://thulanidogs.org/please-help/ to find out how you can donate online by Paypal or donate by check.   If you are interested in fostering, please apply now!  Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue (TSGSR) will continue to see that he is well cared for.  He will come to your home with a supply of food, a cushy pad if wanted, and other goodies such as toys.  show less

Update (July 2022): Frida T is letting her wonderful personality shine in her foster home.  Like many German Shepherds, Frida is a true velcro dog.  She follows her foster mom everywhere and wants to be close to her humans.  She is a very affectionate girl who regularly asks for attention.  She loves her furry legged foster siblings and often tries to play with them, always with a wagging tail and lots of excitement.  After watching her foster siblings, Frida is learning to play with toys.  She loves anything that squeaks.  Frida’s leash manners have improved since arriving at her foster home and taking daily walks.  She still needs guidance as she will take over control if her handler allows her.  However, with an experienced handler she walks much better. Frida is a beauty who is ready to settle down and find her family who will love her forever. Frida T Summary: - Female, 11 yrs old, 77 pounds, current on shots - Good with adults, kids, dogs, and travels well in the car Introducing Frida T:  We are thrilled to have Frida T join the Thulani family.  Until now, Frida has lived her life in a loving home.  She was surrendered to Thulani when her owner moved into an assisted living facility.  Frida is settling wonderfully into her foster home.  She is a gentle, affectionate girl that loves attention.  She enjoys knowing her humans are close, but also likes the freedom of relaxing by herself.  Frida is friendly when greeting people -- she loves the extra attention.  She would appreciate a quieter home without too much commotion where she can provide companionship to her humans.  She can be a little grumpy when she first meets dogs, but within a few minutes she considers the new furry members her friends.  Frida loves going for walks, but she could use some extra training as she is persistently inquisitive of anything with an interesting smell.  She rides well in the car and is potty trained.  Frida is a very loving girl who is ready to find someone to love her for the rest of her days. Frida passed a set of evaluation tests before being accepted into TSGSR. UPDATE (April 2022):  Oh what a difference a year makes!  Harvey T came to Thulani about a year ago suffering from moderate OCD--anxious, barky, some tail chasing, needy for attention.  He was also very skinny.  He has put on weight and today he is a handsome, filled out, eye catching GSD.  Harvey’s anxiety has receded, he barely barks now, and he no longer chases his tail.  Harvey likes to lie close to the gate to his run and quietly watch the world around him.  His leash manners are pretty good, and he is friendly to all people he meets.  Harvey has a good appetite, loves frozen marrow bones, takes treats appropriately from a flat hand, and likes some toys and balls.  Harvey T is a good boy who wants to live his best life with you.  He is so ready to leave Thulani Central and would love to meet you, so please let us know if you are interested in him.   More about Harvey T:  Harvey is a handsome, “younger senior” German Shepherd Dog who was found stray and taken to a shelter in northern California.  Harvey was stressed in the shelter but very sweet with the people who cared for him.  He was very snuggly with the staff but would bark often trying to get attention.  Harvey adjusted to his home at Thulani Central with the help of our dedicated volunteer dog walkers.  Volunteers noticed that he is motivated by treats but is a bit assertive when taking treats from the hand.  Harvey will benefit from a strong leader and could also benefit from a refresher on basic obedience training as is common for many rescue dogs.  Harvey takes direction well and has a friendly disposition towards humans, which bodes well for his making minor corrections to his behavior such as pulling on the leash while walking and barking when seeking attention.  Thulani volunteers are working with him and he responds well to corrections.  Despite his tendency to pull on the leash, he walked calmly past all of the barking dogs on his way out of the shelter.  He likes to chase a ball and is very interested in his surroundings but does not want to be left behind or ignored.  Harvey will likely establish a strong bond over time with a confident leader. Harvey T Summary: - Male, 12 yrs old, 70 lbs, current on shots - Good with Adults, dogs, and travel in the car - No Cats; Children TBD Harvey passed a set of evaluation tests before being accepted into the TSGSR. He remained calm during all of these tests and showed no aggressive tendencies.       What's Next for Harvey T: Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue (TSGSR) will continue to see that Harvey is well cared for.  TSGSR is looking for adoptive home that will care for him for the rest of his life.  He will come to his new home with a supply of food, a cushy pad if wanted, and other goodies such as toys. Introducing Miles T:  Welcome to the Thulani pack Miles T!  Miles came from a Southern CA shelter with Aurora T.  They were surrendered together and love each other’s company.  Miles is a well-mannered, affectionate boy. He greets both people and dogs with a wagging tail, and will calmly walk away from other rambunctious dogs.  Miles is very inquisitive, and loves to investigate everything around him.  After working together, Miles and Aurora learned how to combine their efforts to unlock a gate.  Miles has the ability to walk civilly on a leash.  However, when his nose takes over and he wants to explore something, he can pull. He has made progress, but will need additional work to achieve consistency.  Miles is a very social boy who, together with Aurora T, would love to be able to investigate all the new smells of his forever home.  Miles T Summary: - Male, 9 yrs old, 88 pounds, current on shots - Good with adults, kids, dogs, and travels well in the car - Bonded with Aurora T Miles passed a set of evaluation tests before being accepted into TSGSR. This dog remained calm during all of these tests and showed no aggressive tendencies.      What's Next for Miles T: Miles has been checked out by our vet and is ready for adoption.  If you are interested, please apply now!  Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue (TSGSR) will continue to see that he is well cared for.  He will come to your home with a supply of food, a cushy pad if wanted, and other goodies such as toys.  show less
