JOIN US IN WELCOMING ASHER TO A BETTER LIFE
Say Hello and Welcome to our new Thulani boy Asher T!  He is a super friendly, spirited boy who doesn’t complain about his obvious problems, but is always happy to meet new people and dogs with exuberant kisses and tail wags.  If there ever was a dog that deserved saving, it is Asher.  The shelter went all out to begin his rehabilitation, and Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue pulled him to continue their good work.
Asher has countless medical issues that we will deal with as they surface.  We can’t wait to see his rich black-and-red plush coat emerge as we get his skin condition under control.  This week we will start to deal with the orthopedic problems associated with his left front leg.  His other numerous maladies will be treated in turn.  But this clearly will be a long and expensive path for him as we get him well enough to be available for adoption.  He will need all of his positive energy to move from his present condition into the stunning dog we know he will be, both mentally and physically, but we know he has it in him.

ASHER T UPDATE
When Asher T first came to Thulani, he was in horrific physical condition but his spirit was unquenchable.  A lot has happened since the last update.  He is under medical guidance of two vets, one a dermatology specialist and is getting all of the medical care we can give him.  He is progressing wonderfully, as described below by his fosters, who want to adopt him!

Asher is a sweet, curious, social pup who loves to go to German Shepherd meetups.  My husband remarked that he likes to meet people (hoping they have food), other dogs and is learning how to play and interact with them.  Asher loves the ball though is not ball obsessed.  When he wants to play, he will set it down in front of me and push it forward with his nose.  He will also play with a ball on his own.  He will carry it around, bounce and catch it.  Now, how cute is that?

When he was first rescued, emaciated and with almost no hair, we didn’t know  what breed he was so we did a DNA analysis.  It came back 100% German Shepherd!

Asher is making a remarkable recovery, improving every week.  He is still taking medication, and daily medicated baths, for his skin infections.  I can tell he really doesn’t care for these baths but thankfully, he will hold still until I’m done.  On the plus side, the wisps of fur he had when we first brought him home are growing longer and some of the places with no fur are sprouting.

Asher continues to get four high calorie meals a day, which he enthusiastically looks forward to.  Understandably, food is his number one priority.  At home, when we approach him, he goes for our hands hoping we have food for him. At least now, he can wait while I put his bowl down and wait to be told he can eat rather than jumping up and charging for the bowl.  He is now about 73 lbs., up from 57 lbs. when he was picked up by the shelter, and close to his ideal weight.  His ribs can still be easily felt but are no longer visible and our daily outings are helping him build up muscle and stamina.

As for his enlarged elbow, Asher has had x-rays, an MRI and a biopsy, all with no definitive conclusion.  One veterinary surgeon's opinion is that Asher has elbow displaysia that turned arthritic, causing him to limp.  When he first came to us, he wouldn’t use this leg but some weeks ago, he started putting weight on it.

After fostering Asher for awhile now, we realize he was once someone’s pet because he understands some commands such as stay, wait, sit, out, lie down and down. We are helping him remember some others that he knows but chooses to ignore, like recall and heel.  Asher has also integrated nicely with our two shepherds and one of our cats.  He is a very smart pup and picks up on things quickly such as getting into our van, waiting at the door with the other dogs and going in his crate at bedtime.

I want everyone who reads this to know that my husband and I are very grateful for this opportunity to help Asher become a happy, healthy Senior German Shepherd.  We are also grateful to all those who have supported him with their kind words and donations.  Thank you!

PLEASE DONATE!!  Thulani will need financial help from YOU to be able to do what we have to do for Asher.  Please help Asher get well by donating at www.thulanidogs.org/please-help/

Check back often. We will be updating his bio with his progress.

IBaxter T. is a very sweet and affectionate male German Shepherd Dog who loves to be petted.  Baxter T. is a wonderfully goofy dog with a charming under-bite.  He is super friendly in meeting people and other dogs.  He pulls hard on lead when being walked on a flat collar but is a very polite walker when being walked on a pinch collar, without any pressure being applied.  Baxter could afford to lose a few pounds but he loves treats.  Although he will occasionally lunge to get to a treat, he takes them gently.  Baxter obeys basic commands (“sit” “come” and “no”) and he shows his appreciation for human company with lots of kisses and licks.  Baxter has occasional stiffness after walking but overall he is active and energetic.  Baxter came to Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue from a shelter in Southern California.  He was found stray suffering from an ear infection and skin condition.  Although scared he was very affectionate with the shelter staff and appreciated their care.  Baxter had ear canal surgery in July to clear up his ear infection and with good nutrition and brushing his skin and coat have improved.  Baxter T. Summary: - Baxter is a male, 12 yrs old, weighs 74 lbs, current on shots - Good with Adults, dogs, children, and travel in the car - Cats TBD Baxter passed a set of evaluation tests before being accepted into the TSGSR.  The tests are not intended to assess how smart the dog is but are important for TSGSR to determine if the dog is expected to be safe in a family home.   The tested behaviors check to see if the dog will guard or protect food or toys from people, will tolerate handling all over its body (including ears, nose, lips to check teeth, lifting paws, belly, back, and gently pulling the tail) and the ability to get along with other well behaved dogs.  He remained calm during all of these tests and showed no aggressive tendencies.       Please join us in welcoming Baxter to TSGSR!   Check back often.  We will be updating his bio as we learn more about him! What's Next for Baxter T: Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue (TSGSR) will continue to see that Baxter  is well cared for and receives all medical care needed for his well being while in our care.  In addition, TSGSR is beginning a search for an adoptive home for Baxter.  He will come to his new home with a supply of food, a cushy pad if wanted, and other goodies such as toys. There is no adoption fee.   His medical care is covered for the rest of his life. If you want to learn more about Baxter, or are interested in possibly providing an adoptive or foster home, please send us a message by clicking on the "Ask About Me" button.  We will often get feedback or "updates" from a dog's foster home and as any updates become available they will be included here. Buttercup T. is a beautiful, athletic 10-year-old female GSD mix.  She wandered into a family’s yard and when animal control came to “capture” her – she came as soon as they whistled.  At the time she had open wounds on her legs and may have been hit by a car.  She appears to have been a very well loved dog, but her family could not be found.  A rescue group brought her out of the animal shelter.  The rescue that cared for her then reached out to Thulani to take her and get her adopted.   Buttercup’s legs have healed and she is ready for a new home.  She is quite a beauty!  She is likely a GSD/Collie mix, very agile and can readily walk several miles.  She is very interested in meeting people and other dogs but can be excitable and at times “bossy” with other female dogs.  Her coat is lovely and she enjoys being brushed.  Buttercup is housetrained. Welcome to the Thulani family Cindee T! Cindee is settling nicely into her foster home and letting her sweet personality shine. Cindee is a very affectionate, gentle girl. She loves her people and gives kisses and asks for attention from her foster family. She gets along very well with the resident dogs. She greets people and dogs gently, but treats are an easy way to her heart. Cindee is extremely smart, and has the foster’s own puppy wrapped around her paws. She has figured out how to make him do all the things that she can’t physically keep up with herself. She seems very pleased with herself. Cindee also does well with cats. She barks once to say hello, and then ignores them. Cindee walks very well on a leash. Her mobility isn’t what is used to be in her younger years, but she still loves short walks and patrolling the yard in true shepherd fashion. She is house trained and wanted to impress her foster family by learning the bell system to go outside faster than any of the resident dogs. Cindee loves her food and is not picky. Chicken, kibble, treats, you name it, she is happy to eat it. She likes to be cool and surprisingly picks the cool cement floor rather than the comfortable bed. Cindee is very ready to find her forever family. She is a bit of a couch potato and can’t wait to find her people to relax with. She has adapted well in her foster home and will be thrilled to learn the routines of her new family. Cindee T Summary: - Cindee is a spayed female, about 10 yrs old, weighs 62 lbs, current on shots - Good with adults, all dogs, cats - Currently located in Northern California What's Next for Cindee T: Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue (TSGSR) will continue to see that she is well cared for.   She will come to your home with a supply of food, a cushy pad if wanted, and other goodies such as toys. COMING SOON! Gracie T joined our Thulani family in a rush to save her life as the shelter was afraid she wouldn’t last much longer. Gracie was found as a stray and had very poor mobility. However, within a few days of arriving to Thulani Central, Gracie showed us that she is a fighter and isn’t ready to give up. Her mobility has improved significantly and she is ready to find her forever home. Gracie is an absolute sweetheart. She is gentle, affectionate, and social. She likes to go for walks and is a model citizen on a leash. As she continues to improve her mobility, Gracie would benefit from shorter walks. She loves people and dogs, greeting them politely with her best manners. At first glance, Gracie’s outcome did not look promising. Her rapid improvement in only a few days is a clear demonstration that she is ready to embrace her opportunity for a renewed life with her forever family. Gracie T Summary: - Gracie is a spayed female, about 12 yrs old, weighs 70 lbs, current on shots - Good with adults, dogs - Currently located in Northern California What's Next for Gracie T: Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue (TSGSR) will continue to see that she is well cared for.  We plan to have her checked out by our vet prior to making her available for adoption.  She will come to your home with a supply of food, a cushy pad if wanted, and other goodies such as toys. Harvey T. is a handsome, “younger senior” German Shepherd Dog who was found stray and taken to a shelter in northern California.  Harvey was stressed in the shelter but very sweet with the people who cared for him.  He was very snuggly with the staff but would bark often trying to get attention.  Harvey is now adjusting to his interim home at a Thulani Central. Volunteers noticed that he is motivated by treats but is a bit assertive when taking treats from the hand.  Harvey will benefit from a strong leader and could also benefit from a refresher on basic obedience training as is common for many rescue dogs. Harvey takes direction well and has a friendly disposition towards humans, which bodes well for his making minor corrections to his behavior such as pulling on the leash while walking and barking when seeking attention. Thulani volunteers are working with him and he responds well to corrections. Despite his tendency to pull on the leash, he walked calmly past all of the barking dogs on his way out of the shelter.  He is not expected to do well with cats, but he gets along well with other dogs.  He likes to chase a ball and is very interested in his surroundings but does not want to be left behind or ignored.  Harvey will likely establish a strong bond over time with a confident leader. COMING SOON! Meet Lobo Negro T, the newest dog to join the Thulani pack. Lobo was found as a stray in Northern California and is now settling comfortably into his foster home while we continue to get to know him. Lobo Negro has an excellent temperament. He is a confident, affectionate dog who eagerly greets new people and dogs with a wagging tail. He has freely enjoyed the company of 4 other dogs (3 males, 1 female) in his foster home. Due to his high prey drive, cats would not be a good idea. Lobo Negro would do well in a home with other dogs of any size, but he would also be perfectly content being the only dog.  Lobo Negro has excellent mobility for an older dog. He walks extremely well on a leash, and the few times that he pulls, he will stop with a gentle nudge. He can easily walk several miles and would love being a hiking companion. Lobo Negro is extremely smart. He knows basic commands such as no, sit, and down, and his foster family suspects he knows many more. He is highly food-motivated, and will invite himself to enjoy food on the counter if unattended. However, he will stop with a simple verbal correction. Lobo Negro will thrive in a home where he can get lots of mental stimulation and exercise. He is very relaxed in new situations and rides well in the car, so he would enjoy going on outings to the beach, hiking, or other dog friendly places. Lobo Negro is eager to please and ready to be a wonderful companion to his new family. Margo T. is an athletic 9-year-old female German Shepherd Dog who was found stray and brought to a shelter in Southern California.  When she was found, she was emaciated and had a football sized mass in her abdomen.  Her outlook was poor unless the shelter staff found a rescue organization that was able to help.  Thulani volunteers came to the shelter to see Margo.  She was friendly and she knew basic commands like “sit” and “come”.  She was a great candidate for adoption.  The mass (6 lbs) been removed and the surgery was deemed curative by the pathologist.  She is quickly regaining stamina and weight.  She has a very smooth stride, can easily walk a mile already and volunteers expect her to be a great walking companion.  Margo is very affectionate and she loves to cuddle.  She is not interested in sharing “her people” with other dogs but she is fine with meeting other dogs face to face on walks.  We recommend that she be an only dog in the home.  She is a very loving dog and has bonded very quickly to her caretakers. SadieAnn T. is a gentle, affectionate 10-year-old female German Shepherd Dog.  She was adopted by an older couple as a puppy.  They cared for her until her “mom” passed away and her “dad” was moved to a senior care facility where SadieAnn could not live.  She was turned over to the animal shelter where she was confused but eager to be with people and very friendly to everyone who came along.  Due to her age, she was unlikely to find a new home without the help of Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue.  SadieAnn is now at Thulani Central.  She has no obvious medical problems, good mobility and knows a lot of commands.  She is fine with other dogs and is very open to meeting new dogs and new people.  SadieAnn loves to be with people – she comes right up and asks for snuggles.  She is good on leash and getting even better with practice.  SadieAnn is a medium energy dog who really wants to have a new family to love.  SadieAnn T. Summary: - SadieAnn is a female, 10 yrs old, weighs 67lbs, current on shots - Good with Adults, older children and travel in the car - Cats TBD SadieAnn passed a set of evaluation tests before being accepted into the TSGSR.  The tests are not intended to assess how smart the dog is but are important for TSGSR to determine if the dog is expected to be safe in a family home.   The tested behaviors check to see if the dog will guard or protect food or toys from people, will tolerate handling all over its body (including ears, nose, lips to check teeth, lifting paws, belly, back, and gently pulling the tail).  She remained calm during all of these tests and showed no aggressive tendencies.  Kobuk, one of our shelter test dogs, thinks she is beautiful and sweet and says you should adopt her.   Please join us in welcoming SadieAnn to TSGSR!   Check back often.  We will be updating her bio as we learn more about her! What's Next for SadieAnn T: Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue (TSGSR) will continue to see that SadieAnn  is well cared for and receives all medical care needed for her well being while in our care.  In addition, TSGSR is beginning a search for an adoptive home that will care for her for the rest of her life.  She will come to his new home with a supply of food, a cushy pad if wanted, and other goodies such as toys. There is no adoption fee.  If you want to learn more about SadieAnn, or are interested in possibly providing an adoptive or foster home, please send us a message by clicking on the "Ask About Me" button.  We will often get feedback or "updates" from a dog's foster home and as any updates become available they will be included here. Shasta T. is a gentle male German Shepherd Dog who came to Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue from a local shelter.  Shasta was found stray.  He was alone, hungry and suffering from a severe skin condition.  His skin condition appears to have come from a chemical or burn accident.  While his skin is improving, he will need ongoing medication.  The best way to describe Shasta is a gentle giant. He loves to be petted and doted on.  Shasta can be pushy around food, but he takes treats gently and is overall very good with other dogs.  Shasta is great with children as well.  Shasta is house trained and crate trained.  Although noisy in the car at first, he has improved his car manners during his time in foster care and now settles down after a few minutes. Shasta T.
