About Benny

Adoption Fee: $400

Benny is a mixed breed handsome fella about 4 years old who prefers a quieter home and does best as an only-dog. He prefers to meet new people outside first and then does well with them inside. He is very cuddly to his people and enjoys car rides and adventures. He loves lounging in the sunshine, barking at the deer in the field, and getting the zoomies all around his yard. He's a country boy at heart and would prefer the quieter life in the country. Apartment life and busy city life is not for him.  He should go to a home with older kids and no other dogs. He has been cat-indifferent so far. Benny is available to adopt through Green Dogs Unleashed.

At the time you are seeing this post, Benny is still available for adoption. But please know that we may be working on multiple applications already, and any one of them could be approved at any time. Please READ THIS ENTIRE DESCRIPTION and complete an adoption application, if you are interested in any of our animals. Application at www.greendogsunleashed.org If you send an inquiry to ask if the dog is still available, or just tell us you are interested, your inquiry will not be answered. FILL OUT AN APPLICATION. We can do NOTHING without that. No, we cannot tell you if he would be a match for your family without seeing an application. PLEASE KEEP READING for info.

*/*/* PLEASE NOTE: The first communication you will receive after completing an application will be an email response, which will have instructions on how to proceed. Please check your inbox AND spam folders for the next 48 hours, for this email. We will not begin processing an application without the information requested in that email. */*/*

We are happy to consider applicants from out of state on most dogs. Please read the description to see if this dog is an exception. If the applicant is approved to adopt, they MUST be willing to come to our location in Troy, VA, for a meet and greet. If all parties agree that the pup and family are a good fit, they would take the pup home at that time.

For more information about our mission and for an APPLICATION for adoption, please go to www.greendogsunleashed.com.

GDU does ask a minimum adoption fee of $400.00. This does not even come close to covering all expenses created by animals while in rescue. We are funded solely by the angels and volunteers willing to donate time and finances. This minimum fee includes DAPP, rabies if age appropriate,, heartworm test and preventative, if age appropriate, and flea and tick treatment, as well as neutering or spaying, if the animal is medically sound to undergo surgery. In an attempt to avoid tummy upset from a sudden change of food, the foster family may include a small, transitional bag of the food the dog/puppy has been eating. And if the dog/puppy has grown attached to a special item (like a toy or blanket), they may send that along, as well.

*/*/* Young puppies will receive age-appropriate vaccines, and will be spayed/neutered prior to adoption. Adopters may be required to provide additional puppy boosters and at 16 weeks of age, a rabies vaccine. Future annual vaccines, testing and monthly heartworm preventative are REQUIRED, and will be the financial responsibility of the adopter.

Chico is a stunning 1 y.o. GSD who  likes other dogs and people.  He is working on basic obedience and leash skills.  He is a bit of an escape artist and can climb 6 foot fences, so his adopter must be committed to leash walking or supervised yard time only.  He does get excited to see people and jumps up to say hello and thus may knock over smaller children.  Chico is young and has not had anything in the way of direction prior to arriving at GDU.  He is learning, but will need an adopter committed to continuing positive reinforcement.  He will be neutered early March and will be available to go home after that. At the time you are seeing this post, this dog is still available for adoption. Ember is an energetic 9 month old Doodle puppy who enjoys playing with people and other dogs and would love a home with another young playful dog. She does find it fun to chase the cats but it is all in play for her. She’s a sweet girl, crate trained and learning sit, stay, and to walk nicely on a leash.  Her foster Mom reports she is housebroken. Ember would do well in a variety of settings provided she is allowed a few days to decompress. She would likely do well with dog savvy older kiddos. At the time you are seeing this post, Ember is still available for adoption. But please know that we may be working on multiple applications already, and any one of them could be approved at any time. Julieta, a Moluccan Cockatoo, also known as a Salmon-Crested Cockatoo, came to Green Dogs Unleashed with no information about her age.  Moluccans may live up to 70 years. Julieta has been vetted and appears to be a healthy, energetic adult bird.  She does have areas that have been plucked, and time will tell whether the feathers on the area will grow back. Julieta has a sweet whistle, but is also capable of raucous shrieks and calls. She is not a bird for an apartment or townhouse. According to her current foster mom, Julieta is a solid heart of gold shaped like a big white bird. She took about a week to warm up, but these days she can't get enough snuggles. She enjoys drinking from the sink while mom does dishes, shoving her face into people's hands for head scratches, and threatening her reflection in every mirrored surface she can find. If you leave her alone in a room, she gets upset and does a shockingly excellent impression of a seagull. Do you need a Julieta in your life? She requires a home with large bird experience, regular affection, and a family that enjoys loud seabird cries. Essentially, she's perfect! Moluccans are large birds with large needs, from the size of their cage (minimum size required would be 40" wide x 30" deep, but bigger is better!) to the amount of attention and exercise they need.  They have a very powerful beak and are not well-suited for small children.  She likes to climb around and will happily shred paper and wood blocks and toys. Julieta LOVES attention, and she'll let you know if she feels you're not paying her enough attention.  That being said, with patience and positive training to trust her person she can be a devoted companion.  Julieta's adoption donation fee is $400. At the time you are seeing this post, this bird is still available for adoption. But please know that we may be working on multiple applications already, and any one of them could be approved at any time. Kaiya is a sweet and soft-hearted little girl who wants nothing more than her own people to bond to and cuddle with. She wins the #1 snuggler award, and just wants to lean her way into your heart. She gives sweet, soft kisses, takes treats gently, and has an overall kind and gentle demeanor. She’s shorter than she looks in photos, and makes for a compact companion who is active and enjoys adventures with her human. She is crate trained and potty trained, walks nicely on a leash, and rides nicely in the car. Kaiya likes male dogs, and is not rude to dogs in public, but does not want to live with other female dogs. She can be shy and nervous amidst chaos, so a family or couple without small children is best. Kaiya is learning to gain confidence that will help her feel safe and secure in all environments, but she will need an adopter who is patient with her as she learns that the world isn’t so scary. Olley (Blue & Gold Macaw) and Tobey (Greenwing Macaw) - BONDED PAIR, MUST BE ADOPTED TOGETHER. If you are not able to commit to caring for both of them, please see some of our other available birds that are able to adopted solo instead.   Are you thinking about adopting a macaw?  Some things to consider, and this is not all-inclusive: They're beautiful, right? They may (really, just maybe) learn a few words.  With a lot of time and effort, you may be able to train them to do cute little tricks.   Do you like to travel? Who's taking care of the parrot while you're away? Are there young children in your home?  Parrots bite hard, 350-400 PSI.  You need to pay attention to the parrot's behavior, which may be very subtle, to minimize bites.   Parrots are LOUD.  They are not for apartment or townhouse living, your neighbors won't be a fan.    They're big and need big cages.  A minimum size cage for a Blue & Gold macaw is 40" wide x 30" deep. An even better choice is a 48" x 36", or a 64" x 32" "double" cage.  For a Greenwing macaw it's 48" wide x 36" deep. An even better choice is either a 64" x 32" or an 80" x 40" "double" cage. 5' x 5' or larger indoor aviaries are also good choices for these species. Their living areas should be cleaned daily. Parrots are messy.  Really messy.  They are destructive and will chew up your woodwork and furniture.  They will chew holes in your clothing.  They will destroy electronic gear. Got a remote control, flat-screen tv, cellphone, laptop, tablet or similar item?  Don't leave them out, they will become a chew toy.  Or will be pooped on.  Or both.  Are you house-proud?  You may want to reconsider whether this is the right pet for you. Are you ready to parrot-proof your home?  Got non-stick cookware? That's a big no-no if a parrot is anywhere nearby.  Or research the heat range at which your non-stick cookware will emit toxic fumes.  It can be fatal to a parrot,  Do you wear cologne or perfumes?  Not anymore.  Scented candles?  Give 'em away.  Do you know what's in your cleaning products?  You'll need to, some may contain ingredients that are toxic to parrots. Parrots need a healthy diet.  Commercially formulated parrot food is readily available, but should be supplemented with parrot-safe foods, particularly veggies, nuts and fruits.   Parrots need regular veterinary care, avian/exotic pet veterinarians are not easy to find.  Is there an avian vet within a reasonable distance for you? Macaws can live a very long life, possibly longer than you.  Do you have a care plan if you're unable to care for it? Are you still reading?     Olley and Tobey are about 20 years old.  They have been together for 20 years.  Sadly their beloved person passed away unexpectedly so they are looking for a new home.  Olley, the Blue & Gold, is the shyer of the two, though has a sweet demeanor.  Tobey, the Greenwing, is a really big boy with a personality to match.  He's also reportedly more inclined to bite.  Patience and care are essential in developing trust with them.   At the time you are seeing this post, this animal is still available for adoption. But please know that we may be working on multiple applications already, and any one of them could be approved at any time. Meet Orbit, a 1 year old Smooth Coat Border Collie with constant wiggles! Orbit has spent his entire life outside with very little socialization, but he's ready to learn and is LOVING getting to be an inside dog. He's doing well with crate and house training. Leash training is going a little slower (mostly because he wants to give you wiggly kisses the whole time you're trying to clip it on!) But he does well once it's attached. He LOVES exploring, getting to know his puppy foster brother, smelling new smells, and goes absolutely bananas for a ball or frisbee to play with. He's going to make an amazing fetch companion for a lucky family! Orbit is very high energy and will need a home that can give him enough exercise and stimulation, plus a little bit of patience in helping him learn how to be a dog. *****Due to the sheer number of animals and applications in our program, coupled with a limited number of volunteers, applicants MUST have patience as we process applications.   If you do not hear back from us, the animal may have been adopted.   We strive to let people know but sadly cannot offer reasons for denial beyond that.  Any harassment of our volunteers will go unanswered and we will simply block you.   Our volunteers spend their time working hard to ensure the very best for each animal.   Please remember the animal, not the applicant, is our client.*****  show less

Panda is a 1 year old male, sweet and kind. He’s not the ringleader of the troublesome husky duo available with us, but will keep his people on their toes! He loves to be with people, and likes to lay at your feet. Panda is learning to be quiet in his crate, loves to play with a ball, and is learning to live in a house as a good citizen. He has come a long way in the past couple of months with his foster home! He is food motivated & learning basic obedience. He is great with other dogs about his size and would be good with older children who won’t be easily knocked down. True to the husky breed, he should not go to a home with cats. His adopter should have Siberian husky or working dog experience, a 6 ft fence or strict commitment to leash walking and adequate exercise routine, and the ability to work with him to continue positive training. You can apply for Panda at greendogsunleashed.org At the time you are seeing this post, this dog is still available for adoption. */*/* We are happy to consider applicants from out of state on most dogs. We can’t believe we have had so few applications for our two Siberian Huskies! We know there’s some Husky people out there looking for a new member to join their pack… Rain is an 11 months old, extremely intelligent Husky. She has made a ton of progress in the past few months learning to be a house dog, and loves challenges to keep her busy. Rain is a thinker and she is always thinking of what is next. She is inquisitive, and very food motivated! She loves training time! She will need a 6 ft husky “proof” fence or a family committed to providing enough safe exercise to meets her needs. True to the husky breed, she should not go to a home with cats. Rain is house broken and does well in the crate. She has done well in the 6 ft fence and no longer tests it. With a Siberian experienced owner, Rain will be a wonderful companion, hiking buddy and life will never be boring. To apply for Rain, please submit an application through greendogsunleashed.org At the time you are seeing this post, this dog is still available for adoption. Scorch and his brother Little Scout are still settling in and a little shy, but they are definitely starting to come around and should be very sweet additions to any family once they settle in! You can fill out an application here: https://greendogsunleashed.org While we do allow out of state adoptions, the adopter must be able to travel to Charlottesville, Virginia and meet in person at an agreed upon time to take their cat home. GDU does ask a minimum adoption donation of $120.00 for cats. This is a minimum donation and does not cover all expenses as we are funded solely by the angels and volunteers willing to donate time and finances. This minimum donation includes age appropriate vaccines and flea and tick treatment, as well as neutering or spaying if the animal is medically sound to undergo surgery. This minimum donation does not even begin to cover the actual expenses each animal has while in rescue, but does go directly towards vet care for our rescue animals. show less

Watson is a sweet 3 yr old boy who loves absolutely everyone he meets. He is great with other dogs and loves to play chase, have a little wrestle time with his foster sibs, then naps. He is a gentlemen with food and never snatches at fingers or other dogs' foods. Watson also enjoys snuggles with cats. At night, he likes to get all the way under the covers to the bottom of the bed and sleeps all night. He is house trained and crate trained. He is working on his leash skills as he pulls a bit. When he lands at his forever home he will bloom into an amazing friend. Watson was surrendered to us due to conflict with a small child laying on the sofa. He did NOT bite the child (not a scratch even according to his previous family) but did grab her hand with his mouth. While we have only witnessed Watson being loving and kind to everyone, because of this, we prefer a home without small children. A family with respectful kiddos able to be taught not to lay on a dog or pester while eating (this goes for every dog), or a home which will simply teach Watson boundaries and basic training would work well.  At the time you are seeing this post, this dog is still available for adoption.
