Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue
About Harvey T
Adoption Fee: $...no adoption fee, medical coverage provided for life
Update (Sept 2022): Harvey T recently had a sleepover at a volunteer’s house. He thoroughly enjoyed himself, showing off all of his excellent qualities. Harvey enjoyed running around the backyard with his temporary foster mom. He loved his walks, and is a perfect gentleman on a leash. Harvey did very well with the resident dog and was excited to follow the humans around the house. Harvey is a loving, easy going dog who is eagerly awaiting his final move home to his forever family.
Update (April 2022): Oh what a difference a year makes! Harvey T came to Thulani about a year ago suffering from moderate OCD--anxious, barky, some tail chasing, needy for attention. He was also very skinny. He has put on weight and today he is a handsome, filled out, eye catching GSD. Harvey’s anxiety has receded, he barely barks now, and he no longer chases his tail. Harvey likes to lie close to the gate to his run and quietly watch the world around him. His leash manners are pretty good, and he is friendly to all people he meets. Harvey has a good appetite, loves frozen marrow bones, takes treats appropriately from a flat hand, and likes some toys and balls. Harvey T is a good boy who wants to live his best life with you. He is so ready to leave Thulani Central and would love to meet you, so please let us know if you are interested in him.
Harvey T Summary:

Introducing Harvey T: Harvey is a handsome, “younger senior” German Shepherd Dog who was found stray and taken to a shelter in northern California. Harvey was stressed in the shelter but very sweet with the people who cared for him. He was very snuggly with the staff but would bark often trying to get attention. Harvey adjusted to his home at Thulani Central with the help of our dedicated volunteer dog walkers. Volunteers noticed that he is motivated by treats but is a bit assertive when taking treats from the hand. Harvey will benefit from a strong leader and could also benefit from a refresher on basic obedience training as is common for many rescue dogs. Harvey takes direction well and has a friendly disposition towards humans, which bodes well for his making minor corrections to his behavior such as pulling on the leash while walking and barking when seeking attention. Thulani volunteers are working with him and he responds well to corrections. Despite his tendency to pull on the leash, he walked calmly past all of the barking dogs on his way out of the shelter. He likes to chase a ball and is very interested in his surroundings but does not want to be left behind or ignored. Harvey will likely establish a strong bond over time with a confident leader.
Harvey passed a set of evaluation tests before being accepted into the TSGSR. The tests are not intended to assess how smart the dog is but are important for TSGSR to determine if the dog is expected to be safe in a family home. The tested behaviors check to see if the dog will guard or protect food or toys from people, will tolerate handling all over its body (including ears, nose, lips to check teeth, lifting paws, belly, back, and gently pulling the tail) and the ability to get along with other well behaved dogs. He remained calm during all of these tests and showed no aggressive tendencies.
What's Next for Harvey T:
Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue (TSGSR) will continue to see that Harvey is well cared for. TSGSR is looking for adoptive home that will care for him for the rest of his life. He will come to his new home with a supply of food, a cushy pad if wanted, and other goodies such as toys.
