About Charity T

Adoption Fee: $No Adoption Fee, Medical Care Covered for the Life of the Dog

Charity T is a smaller female German Shepherd Dog (GSD) mix who was brought to Thulani with several other dogs when the rescue owner lost her fight against ALS.  She seems to be hearing and vision impaired but she finds her way around and moves with confidence.

Charity loves to explore and will make a great walking companion. She is good on leash and responsive to direction.  Charity is quite charming.  She is not a digger but has been seen finding patches of dirt to play in… and having little conversations with the dirt.

Charity gets along well with other dogs and is very gentle in taking treats.  We are learning more about Charity and will update her bio as we learn more about her.

Charity T. Summary:
- Charity is a Female, 10 yrs old, current on shots, spayed, and house-trained
- Good with Adults, kids (10+ and above), dogs,

- Cats TBD

To be qualified as a potential Thulani Dog and join the TSGSR senior dog program Charity had to pass a number of behavior tests.   These tests were selected to assure that her behavior is consistent with other dogs that have been found to be safe in a family home.    We check to assure that all potential Thulani Dogs pass a full body feel test, do not guard or protect food or toys from people, and are good around other well-behaved dogs.  Passing these tests is measured by showing no undesirable reactive behaviors.   Based on her behavior tests and other shelter interactions Charity PASSED the behavior requirements needed to become a Thulani Dog.

Please join us in welcoming Charity T!

What's Next for Charity T.:
Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue (TSGSR) will continue to see that Charity is well cared for and receives all medical care needed for her well being while in our care.  In addition, TSGSR is beginning a search for an adoptive home that will care for her for the rest of her life.  Charity will come to her new home with a supply of food, a cushy pad if wanted, and other goodies such as toys.

If you want to learn more about Charity, or are possibly interested in providing an adoptive or foster home, please send us a message by clicking on the "Ask About Me" button.  We will often get feedback or "updates" from a dog's foster home and as any updates become available they will be included here.

Buddy T. is a 10-year-old male German Shepherd Dog who was found stray in Southern California.  He was covered in dirt, starving and had open sores on his ears.  Shelter staff found him to be a social boy who was very eager for human attention.  Buddy walked past the many stressed and barking dogs in the shelter, remaining focused on the people around him.  Buddy had an accident at some point, resulting in a shortened tail that he was wagging in circles to show how appreciative he was of receiving love and medical treatment.  TSGSR staff visited Buddy and found a gentle giant with a big personality.  Buddy is now being cared for by TSGSR volunteers at Thulani Central.  He rides well in the car, gets along with other dogs and is good with middle school aged children as well as adults.  He has leash manners and obeys basic commands. Thulani volunteers all love to walk and brush Buddy!  He has a personality that pulls people in and makes them smile. He will make a wonderful addition to a family with love to share. Buddy T. Summary: - Buddy is a neutered male, 10 yrs old, weighs 71 lbs, current on shots - Good with Adults, middle school aged children, dogs, and travel in the car - Young Children and cats TBD Buddy  passed a set of evaluation tests before being accepted into the TSGSR.  The tests are not intended to assess how smart the dog is but are important for TSGSR to determine if the dog is expected to be safe in a family home.   The tested behaviors check to see if the dog will guard or protect food or toys from people, will tolerate handling all over its body (including ears, nose, lips to check teeth, lifting paws, belly, back, and gently pulling the tail) and the ability to get along with other well behaved dogs.  He remained calm during all of these tests and showed no aggressive tendencies.       Please join us in welcoming Buddy to TSGSR!   Check back often.  We will be updating his bio as we learn more about him! Cookie Girl is a wonderful, loving 9-year-old female German Shepherd Dog who was found stray and brought to a shelter in Southern California.  She is a well behaved dog who will thrive in a new home.  She was adopted from a shelter as a 4-month old puppy.  Cookie is friendly with everyone but she really lights up around children.  She loves to cuddle and be affectionate with her humans as well as other dogs.  Cookie can live successfully in a large pack setting with multiple dogs.  She has a very fun play style and always trying to get the other dogs to engage in a game.  Cookie does not know basic commands but she is extremely smart and will be easy to train. Cookie will make a great family dog where she has kids or grand kids to spend time with.  Rarely do we get a dog who is nearly perfect.....Cookie is one of those dogs.  We have no idea why she ended up in the shelter.  She seems like she was cared for and truly LOVED – and now only looks for a new chance to give love back. Daniel T. is a distinguished 14-year-old male German Shepherd Dog (GSD) that was owner surrendered to the shelter.   The shelter volunteers advised that even at 14 years old he still knows how to have fun.   He tries to enjoy each day as much as possible which could involve an activity as simple as enjoying a wonderful sunbathing session.  He was affectionately referred to as their cute grandpa dog by one shelter volunteer.   He is not the dog you would go running with or take on extended walks but he would enjoy short meanders in the neighborhood and he definitely will fill your home with his abundant affection.     Daniel T. Summary: - Daniel is a Male, 14 yrs old, weighs 105lbs, current on shots, house-trained - Good with Adults, some other dogs, and travel in the car As you can likely see from looking at his included video Daniel is very friendly with the other dogs in his shelter playgroup and he does limp a bit on his right rear leg,  The shelter vets did take a set of XRAYs of Daniels hindquarters and did confirm that his limp was related to arthritis in his spine, hip and stifle (equivalent to the human knee).    This condition is not uncommon in older GSDs and at the age of 14 Daniel seems to be doing quite well... especially without having the benefit of medications for this condition.    Fortunately for Daniel, the shelter vet immediately addressed his condition and got him started on a canine NSAID that should ease the pain and inflammation of his arthritis.   Undoubtedly, this will have a positive quality of life improvement for Daniel so that his sunbathing sessions will be even more sweeeeet!    Medications like Meloxicam or similar NSAIDs are also quite inexpensive (~ 10 to 25 cents per day) although Daniel's adopter will not need to account for this cost.   Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue (TSGSR) will cover Daniel's related medical costs for the rest of his life. Even though Daniel is a mellow dog and would clearly pass the Thulani behavior tests he was evaluated to assure that he could be expected to be safe and do well in a family home.  The behavior tests include a check to see if he will guard or protect food from people and a check to see if he will tolerate a full-body feel test that ends up touching most areas of his body (ears, snout, check of his teeth, lifting paws, gently pulling his tail, and much more...).  Lastly, we always check to see if a dog can get along with other well-behaved dogs.    Daniel did indeed pass these tests without any incidents and as you can see in his included video he does get along nicely with other well behaved dogs. Daniel was rescued from a S. Cal Shelter and was transported to Thulani Central in N. Cal (headquarters for TSGSR) where he is setting in.   Daniel was calm and quiet for the 6+ hour ride to Thulani Central.    The trip was broken up with frequent rest stops along the way not only helping Daniel to take care of nature's call but also helping our volunteer transport drivers get a break.    At 105 lbs Daniel did need the help of a folding ramp to get into one of our taller transport vehicles but seemed to do fine with our assistance showing him the way. Please join us in welcoming Daniel T. to Thulani Central.   We are still getting to know Daniel so we will be continuing to update his bio. What's Next for Daniel T.: Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue (TSGSR) will continue to see that Daniel is well cared for and receives all medical care needed for his well being while in our care.  In addition, TSGSR is beginning a search for an adoptive home that will care for him for the rest of his life.  Daniel will come to his new home with a supply of food, a cushy pad if wanted, and other goodies such as toys.  Daniel’s medical expenses will be covered for the rest of his life by Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue (TSGSR)! Harvey T. is a handsome, “younger senior” German Shepherd Dog who was found stray and taken to a shelter in northern California.  Harvey was stressed in the shelter but very sweet with the people who cared for him.  He was very snuggly with the staff but would bark often trying to get attention.  Harvey is now adjusting to his interim home at a Thulani Central. Volunteers noticed that he is motivated by treats but is a bit assertive when taking treats from the hand.  Harvey will benefit from a strong leader and could also benefit from a refresher on basic obedience training as is common for many rescue dogs. Harvey takes direction well and has a friendly disposition towards humans, which bodes well for his making minor corrections to his behavior such as pulling on the leash while walking and barking when seeking attention. Thulani volunteers are working with him and he responds well to corrections. Despite his tendency to pull on the leash, he walked calmly past all of the barking dogs on his way out of the shelter.  He is not expected to do well with cats, but he gets along well with other dogs.  He likes to chase a ball and is very interested in his surroundings but does not want to be left behind or ignored.  Harvey will likely establish a strong bond over time with a confident leader. Margo T. is an athletic 9-year-old female German Shepherd Dog who was found stray and brought to a shelter in Southern California.  When she was found, she was emaciated and had a football sized mass in her abdomen.  Her outlook was poor unless the shelter staff found a rescue organization that was able to help.  Thulani volunteers came to the shelter to see Margo.  She was friendly and she knew basic commands like “sit” and “come”.  She was a great candidate for adoption.  The mass (6 lbs) been removed and the surgery was deemed curative by the pathologist.  She is quickly regaining stamina and weight.  She has a very smooth stride, can easily walk a mile already and volunteers expect her to be a great walking companion.  Margo is very affectionate and she loves to cuddle.  She is not interested in sharing “her people” with other dogs but she is fine with meeting other dogs face to face on walks.  We recommend that she be an only dog in the home.  She is a very loving dog and has bonded very quickly to her caretakers. Margo T. Pilot T. is a wonderful senior German Shepherd Dog (GSD) that has the perfect combination of calm temperament, handsome appearance, and friendly personality.   How he became stray before turning up at the shelter early last year is anyone's guess.  Sadly, his owners never came looking for him, so Thulani stepped in to rescue him.  Pilot has happily spent the past year with a family who gave him lots of love.  Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, he now needs a new home.  His family's employer is relocating them and they will be in a series of short term housing situations through the end of the year.  They tried hard to line up pet friendly accommodations for the duration, but could not find places that would allow Pilot to remain with them. Pilot T. Summary: - Pilot is a Male, 11 yrs old, weighs 88 lbs, neutered, house-trained - Good with Adults, dogs, cats and travel in the car Pilot has collected a lot of admirers along the way, starting with the volunteers who lined up to walk him at the shelter.   They were quoted as having the following adoring comments about him: VERY FRIENDLY, HAPPY, SWEET DOG, MELLOW AND EASY GOING, VERY SMART AND WELL BEHAVED, KNOWS SOME COMMANDS.  Everyone who has met Pilot since then agrees!  His family describes him as a mellow companion, who wants to be near his people but not cuddle.  While he loves to be your shadow, he is also quite content to stay home alone for a few hours.  He is calm and curious when meeting new people.  Pilot is a happy dog who wants to please, just about the only things he dislikes are thunder and fireworks! Pilot has age related mobility issues, which cause his gait to be stiff and wobbly much of the time.  He also occasionally requires some assistance.  Despite this, he enjoys going on daily walks around the block with his family.  He can easily navigate the short steps into his one-story home, however, he would need significant supervision and assistance on a set of stairs. At this point, we suspect you are starting to understand that Pilot is a special dog.  He would do well in any size family.  We are looking for an immediate foster or adoptive home for gentle Pilot.  If you would like to know more, please let us know! What's Next for Pilot T.: Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue (TSGSR) will continue to see that Pilot is well cared for and receives all medical care needed for his well being.  Pilot will come to his new home with a supply of food, a cushy pad if wanted, and other goodies such as toys.  Pilot’s related medical expenses will be covered for the rest of his life by Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue (TSGSR)!. He absolutely loves having a job and will fetch his beloved soccer ball for as long as you feel like throwing it. Rebel T. is a handsome 10-year-old male German Shepherd Dog who was found stray and turned over to the shelter.  When meeting Rebel, you do not know he is 10 year old.  He has lots of energy and is very curious. Initially, you see him getting into things, smelling EVERYTHING.  Something seems a little off, not until he’s in a darker situation do you realize - HE’S BLIND.  Rebel was diagnosed with Progressive Retinal Atrophy.  There is no treatment and is considered clinically blind.  However, we feel he does see some shadows.  Rebel’s ability to navigate new surroundings indicates his vision has been impaired for some time and has managed to adjust for it. Rebel has some hip stiffness.  A good diet and bedding will help along with exercise.  Rebel would make a great daily walker.  An owner with previous GSD or working dog experience would be ideal.  Rebel’s nose leads him everywhere....usually surfing your counter looking for his next snack.  We recommend middle school age and older children. Crated trained - he takes a few minutes to settle in but with time and a routine he is likely to settle down even quicker.  He is very well behaved.  Rebel was fostered in the home with 11 other dogs and did just fine.  Overall Rebel is an incredible dog that will bond to a new owner quickly then follow you around and loyal until his final days. If you want to learn more about Rebel, or are interested in possibly providing an adoptive or foster home, please send us a message by clicking on the "Ask About Me" button.  We will often get feedback or "updates" from a dog's foster home and as any updates become available they will be included here. Roxanne T. is a lovely 8-year-old female German Shepherd Dog who came to Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue from a local shelter.  She is on the small side, housetrained and treat motivated.  Roxanne is very sweet and really wants to be loved.  Thulani volunteers find that she can be easily overwhelmed and needs confidence building.  She draws her support mainly from interaction with people.  Although she can live with another dog, she would likely prefer to be an only dog with her own people to love.  Roxanne enjoys being petted and brushed.  She is a great fit for a quiet, loving family.  We have a lot more to learn about Roxanne and will update her bio as we learn more about her. Rufus T. is a handsome, affectionate 10-year-old male German Shepherd Dog (GSD) who was left at a shelter in Southern California because his family felt that they could no longer provide care for him.  Rufus is suffering from severe hip dysplasia and spondylosis.  As a result, Rufus loses control of his hind legs when walking or running.  This is particularly true when he is excited.  He is an enthusiastic dog who loves people and is very active despite his disability.  He is well mannered, loves attention and is very food motivated.  TSGSR brought Rufus into their care and he is quickly adapting to his new surroundings.  Rufus appears to have been very well loved.  He is housetrained, walks on leash and gets along with other dogs. Rufus is a wonderful, sweet dog who really wants to engage his human!  His hip issues will continue to progress so exercise is of great benefit.  Rufus loves his daily walks and routinely does a mile and a half!  He is in need of a loving home with a family that can love him despite his disability.  TSGSR VOLUNTEER UPDATE:  Rufus has been at Thulani Central for a few months.  Read through the Update below from our Thulani Volunteers and you will see how much love and spirit he will bring to his new family.  “Rufus is an incredibly special boy with so much love to share!  When he first came, I’d assist him up then he’d charge out of the kennel, with me in tow, ready to explore with no hesitation.  Now I just can’t believe how much stronger he has grown!  Now he is walking up the “Thulani Hill of Hope” on his own. He is such a love bug too!” “The first time I met Rufus, I went into his run to sit in the chair to observe him....it took about 10 seconds for him to climb up into my lap and I've loved him ever since. At the beginning, it was looking pretty bad for his back legs but with time, care, supplements and pain medication he's a new dog. He loves his people, walks, being brushed and of course, treats. He's active, interested in whatever's going on and engaging.” “When he became stronger and moved with less difficulty, his personality changed a bit. He wanted more loving and attention from us instead of just fast walking. It felt like the focus he needed to be able to move was freed up to give to the people around him.”  “Rufus has overcome so much of his disability.  Once we put astro turf into his kennel so he doesn’t slip, he blossomed into a healthy dog that loves to follow people around.  Watching him is do heartwarming because he never let his health limitations get him down!” “One other thing Rufus loves his tuna fish too!” Rufus T.
