Bluetails Pet Rescue

, Marrero, LA, 70072

Shelter Description

The mission and vision for Bluetails Pet Rescue is to save (FREEDOM) dogs and cats from shelters, abandonment, surrender or neglected by placing into temporary homes (FOSTER) and providing veterinarian care and rehabilitation as needed to prepare for permanent placement into loving homes (FOREVER). We are an all-volunteer, foster home based, certified 501(c)(3) dog & cat rescue organization based in New Orleans, Louisiana . We do not have a physical shelter. Instead, we operate primarily through our foster homes, online databases and at adoption events/expos. The majority of our animals come from animal control groups and open admission shelters in Louisiana and throughout the Gulf Coast Region, where overcrowding and overpopulation lead to the euthanasia of millions of healthy, friendly pets every year. We are committed to providing the dogs that come into Bluetails Pet Rescue with the best possible care while they wait for their forever homes by acclimating them to life outside of a shelter and providing the appropriate veterinary care needed. We also serve our community and adopters by educating and encouraging responsible pet ownership with an emphasis on the need for spaying and neutering and Heart-Worm Prevention. We never euthanized animals due to space or time constraints, but we may elect to euthanize in the event of a severe, untreatable/debilitating illness or extremely dangerous behavioral concerns. Because we do not kill to make space, however, we cannot take in every animal that needs help. Because our foster homes are the backbone of Bluetails, and to help our organization run smoothly, it is our goal to provide the best experience possible. We encourage each foster home to be as involved as they are comfortable with and allow them the freedom to foster based on their needs, restrictions, or desires.

My name is Carmello and I love to eat! I love to eat so much that I steal food from other foster dogs and my foster mom is not very happy about that. I just can't help myself! I guess I'm just bored with my special diet. You see, I have a liver shunt but my doctor says that it is manageable with a no meat protein diet. That stinks because I really love meat! Anyway, my special diet isn't that expensive or hard to do but it would be much easier if I was the only dog. I also have a special ability. Have you ever heard of Harry Houdini? Well, I'm kind of like him. I can figure out how to get out of my crate sometimes and run around so I can steal other dogs' food. Tee hee hee. . .. I will come back though when you call my name because I'm a good boy. I love to snuggle, I'm house trained and I'm really good on car rides too!  So, when can I meet you?  I'm ready to find my new home soon! Maverick is approximately a 6yr old poodle mix who is looking for a home with someone who has lots of love to give! He's a sweet, rather quirky boy who just wants to please and get treats and pets! It seems to us as though Maverick has never been a part of a loving family, so he's learning what it's like to be safe, loved, and cared for. He's already made huge strides after a few weeks with his foster family! Every day he gets calmer and more trusting. Maverick is now crate trained and we're working on house training! He seems to know he's supposed to go potty outside but hasn't quite learned how to let us know when he needs to go yet. He knows 'sit,' and we're working on 'no' and 'down' right now!  He is very content in our lap while we work or watch tv, and he loves chewing to pass the time! His favorites have been hooves and antlers, but he'll find a sick or leaf in the yard to occupy himself. He doesn't seem like he's done much relaxing in his past, so chewing on these gives him something to focus on. We've not seen him chew on anything like furniture or shoes, so he's good there! He likes toys and is learning how to play with them. We've been learning tug-o-war and have so much fun! Maverick came to Bluetails completely matted and neglected. When he first got to foster after getting a shave down, his tail brushing his back spooked him! He's now used to massages and pets and loves being rubbed down! There's no telling what Maverick endured before he was rescued, but we can't wait for him to find his furever home where he feels loved and secure!   He really is the sweetest boy and just needs someone who is willing to be patient as he learns life in a loving home! His ideal home would be with someone who is familiar with dog behavior and can help him work through some of his quirks! show less
